The Xenocide Mission By Ben Jeapes - An Infinity Plus Review The Xenocide Mission. by ben jeapes. Review by John Toon. Elsewhere in infinityplus fiction by ben jeapes Pages out of Order; and Trial by Alien. http://www.infinityplus.co.uk/nonfiction/xenocide.htm
Extractions: The Xenocide Mission Ben Jeapes' "young adult" novels have an air of bygone straightforwardness about them good, honest science fiction, like Grandma used to make but coupled with this is a modern sensibility that lends them a richness of texture to rival the best of contemporary "adult" SF. Jeapes' aliens are, well, alien, with alien ways and alien bodies. His human characters have to work hard to deal with them politically and socially. Admittedly, these aliens do have handy-dandy translator devices that allow them to speak to the humans, but I suppose it'd be a pretty short novel if they didn't. At least they don't all speak impeccable English already. The Xenocide Mission picks up where His Majesty's Starship left off, with an egalitarian Commonwealth of Humans and First Breed (or "Rusties") quietly observing the world of the Kin (the eponymous Xenocides, or "XCs"). The Kin are relatively new to space travel; their last observed flight was an interplanetary expedition to a neighbouring world, where they exterminated another alien species, apparently for no reason. The Commonwealth is naturally concerned that the Kin might develop or discover the step-through technology that allows Humans and Rusties to socialise, and start wiping out other civilisations. So it's cause for panic when a Kin attack squad sneaks up unnoticed on a concealed Commonwealth observation post, wreaks carnage and discovers the step-through technology mentioned above.

What made you want to set up your own SFF publishing house? I didn't! I wanted to set up my own academic, or at least non-fiction, publishing house. The market for such is much more clearly defined and, unlike fiction, doesn't depend on something so ephemeral as the public's taste. Ben Jeapes. He laughs at danger. All my publishing experience was for small academic publishers: being in a small publisher is far preferable to being a small wheel in a march larger machine, but it does mean you hit your head on the ceiling very soon. Promotion prospects past a certain point aren't good, because chances are that the company is privately owned and the owners are the ones at the top. So, for several years I had had a feeling that one day I would be starting my own company. When the decision was suddenly thrust upon me by my losing my job, however, I had no contacts or particular interests in non-fiction fields that weren't already adequately covered. So it had to be what I probably knew best, which is SF.

Ben Jeapes - owner of Big Engine - ruminates about the pain and joy of setting up a new science fiction book publishing company. B e warned that this is a disillusioned convert speaking, so I might not be as fair-minded and balanced as some would like. But I'll try to give credit where credit is due. Last year I wrote a piece for the Snarl (SF/F art publisher Paper Tigers customer ezine; Ed) on the trials of setting up a small press publishing company, Big Engine, and I ended on the optimistic note that it looked as if print-on-demand might be the answer to my problems. Three books on, let's look at the experiences so far. Small runs of books can be printed cheaply and quickly: you supply a PDF file for the text and a TIF file for the cover, and that's all that's needed. None of the tedious making of films, plates, etc., that traditional printers will insist on and which push up the price. Cost and convenience apart, what clinched the deal was that all the titles in their system would be fed automatically into Bertrams (in the UK) and Ingrams (in the US), and thence into Amazon. Double, triple your marketing reach at a stroke without even trying!

Extractions: Catapulted suddenly from command of an obscure patrol ship to command of the starship Ark Royal , Michael Gilmore must carry the Crown Prince of UK1 to the conference with the aliens that will decide which nation will be chosen to jointly develop a new planet. But in an international interstellar interspecies negotiation with the future of the race at stake there is skulduggery to be expected from all quarters. The fate of both species depends on a simple man's ability to see through the web of lies and deceit, to know when to fight and when to talk, when to obey and when to rebel. I didn't have time for this book; I was revising for an exam. Foolishly I took a break and read the first few chapters. As a thriller, gripping, as science fiction, fascinating. Cunning twists in the plot hurl the reader unexpectedly from one pupil-dilating peril to another. Make sure you have time for this because once you have started you can't stop. There's a rather nice Website for the book.

Extractions: Little does Joel know that soon he will be involved in a battle for his life, his friends and his species. Joel is quickly sucked into a world of intrigue where numerous players vye for conquest. After only several pages it becomes obvious that The Xenocide Mission is an extraordinary book. As the reader enters Ben Jeapess world of intergalactic warfare the plot begins to twist and turn faster than a rattlesnake. Role reversals are fair play to Jeapes as he manipulates the characters into positions the reader would have never expected. The novel does have some weaknesses though. For instance, the writing style is sub par. The novel reads well but lacks some important elements. Also the vocabulary leaves much to be desired. Overall, the The Xenocide Mission offers a good read but is written on a middle school reading level. The novel's weakness can be forgiven in light of its numerous strong points In retrospect the novel's weakness can be forgiven in light of its numerous strong points. For instance, The Xenocide Mission does not waste the readers time. The novel immediately goes into action mode and doesnt quit until the last pages. The nature of the plot is also exceptional because Jeapes manages to address social and racial issues while continuing the action. In the novel, the Rusties are a species of genetically engineered servants that the characters try to live in harmony with. But interspecies relations are not easy to control and fighting erupts.

Extractions: a novelette by Ben Jeapes "Pages out of Order" is vaguely autobiographical in that I went to a not dissimilar school from 1978-1983. I emerged relatively unscathed but could never take the place seriously: the chorus of the school song went "Vivat Rex Eduardus Sextus", which I thought rather showed a lack of awareness of current affairs. -Ben Jeapes Pages out of Order Third form, Winter term, 1978 T om's arrival in my life was preceded by the sound of his mother. It was a sunny September weekend and most of our year had already arrived at our new school; we had shaken off our parents and were unpacking our trunks in the dormitory, casting covert glances at our neighbours or making shy conversation. Once, a summer ago, we had known who we were. Good little public schoolboys, the future administrators of a dead empire; diehard Conservatives, sworn enemies of Callaghan's Labour government. Two months beforehand we were kings at prep school and the pinnacle of maturity was the grand age of thirteen. Now we were little boys again, dwarfed even by the mountainous fourteen-year-olds in the year above us. We were longing for an object on which to vent our new-found insecurity, and then the Meltons arrived. We heard Mrs Melton coming down the corridor and suspended our unpacking to listen better: "Is this the way? Doesn't anyone know anything? You, are you a prefect? Can you direct us to Thomas's dormitory?"
