Joan Hall Hovey Interview By Molly Martin Word Weaving Feature. An Interview with joan hall hovey. by Molly Martin.Molly Hello joan hall hovey! I know you have written http://www.wordweaving.com/featureoct01_01.html
Extractions: Word Weaving Feature Molly : Hello Joan Hall Hovey! I know you have written not only a number of books to date, but also articles and short stories in addition to being a writing instructor, busy gal! Please, if you will, tell us which of your books you are most happy with. And why. Joan : I'll answer your question in a round-about way, Molly. Because I trust in the muse a lot, I begin with an image or a situation. With NOWHERE TO HIDE I had an image of a room in an 'home for girl', where the girls slept. I could see the child and the lamb picture on the wall above one of the beds: I viewed the scene through the killer's eyes. These little girls already had a number of strikes against them, and now they were in dire danger from a madman. When I began to write my first novel, LISTEN TO THE SHADOWS I had a situation in mind. A "what if?" Katie's fiance went missing in Vietnam years earlier. As you has finally begun to accept that he is dead, frightening evidence that he might still be alive, (and not as the sweet boy you knew) begin to show up. I like to work up the suspense slowly, building and building so that my reader is turning those pages in anticipation of what is coming next. As to what book I'm most happy with - I consider my best work so far the book I'm presently writing. A cliché answer, but that's because it's true. I'm totally immersed in my characters and their story right now. The stories I've already published belong to my readers. But all my books are my babies, and I love them equally, although for different reasons. I hope readers will too. Read excerpts to both LISTEN TO THE SHADOWS and NOWHERE TO HIDE on my website. Her first story sold to True Confessions and her second to Home Life . Since then her efforts have seen the light in quite a number of diverse magazines as well as newspapers with her short story Dark Reunion selected for the anthology Investigating Women . Her first novel, Listen to the Shadows , was published in 1991 followed shortly by Nowhere to Hide which won an Eppie Award in 2001 (both have now been reprinted). Also a writing instructor Hovey has been regional Vice President of the Crime Writers of Canada and is currently a member of Sisters in Crime as well as Mystery Writers of America. She has another passion: acting. Hovey has starred in a number of plays in community theater. She also has four children. Literary Criticism In knowing that Joan Hovey is a writing instructor, a reader expects clarity of expression, a plot accurately told, credible characters and a well structured story: you get all of this plus one further aspect: passion. One can read through the lines the passion that this author puts in her work thus in other words producing literature for the want of writing and not to guarantee income. Furthermore, the people involved in the stories are not wonder women performing amazing feats but just human beings with their pain, physical as well as emotional, and their weaknesses. This gives her books an aura of realism making the reading extremely pleasant. Joan Hovey has told the Bastulli Mystery Library that she is currently at work on her third book. We are certainly looking forward to it.

Extractions: June 2000; 0-595-00366-4; 320 pages Read Book Synopsis Author /Bibliography Read Excerpt Chapter One NOWHERE TO HIDE The closet door was at the top of the stairs at the end of the hall. To get to it he had to pass by two doors, one on either side, both now partly open. He could hear talking, very low. Farther away, the sound of running away. In three quick strides he was past the doors and inside the closet. He knew he was smiling. He felt excited the way he always did when he got past them. Even if anyone had got a glimpse of him, it wouldn't really matter. He was invisible. The invisible man. The secret door was to his right, just behind the wide rack of musty-smelling winter coats in varying sizes. He ducked beneath them, and opening the door, let himself into the narrow, cave-like space. The space separating the inside and outside walls went nearly the whole way round the third floor, stopping abruptly at the wall of the stairwell where he had to turn around and go back the way he had come. Once, this space had been used for storage - old bed springs, broken chairs, trunks - but the doors, except for the one in the closet which he had come upon quite by luck, and through which he had come again and again, had long since been replaced by sheetrock and papered over with rose-patterned wallpaper.
