But in Washington, it was the Congress that was "absolutely, positively" determined to deliver for Federal Express so determined that Republican Senate leader Trent Lott kept the entire body in session past its scheduled adjournment date, until the weary members gave-up and passed the benefit that FedEx wanted. It's a classic example of how a powerful corporation buys legislation. Both the Senate and House had passed versions of the basic federal aviation act, without a certain [quote] "technical correction" that Federal Express demanded. This "correction" would make it nearly impossible for the airline's employees organize a union something many of them want. So FedEx simply used Congress as its union-buster. Even though neither house had approved the FedEx proviso, a secret conference committee snuck it back into the bill. What did the company use to sliiiiiide its amendment into the bill? Money, of course the WD-40 of American politics.

Jim Hightower's bashing of the so-called 'Enviropig' is a classic example. One of the major environmental hazards of pig farms is phosphorous runoff. Phosphorus is contained in the feed that pigs eat, but the animals are not able to digest it. Hence, they excrete it and it ends up in area water supplies. A biotech company has managed to create a genetically modified pig that is able to digest phosphorous, which would significantly reduce phosphorous runoff. One would think that advances in reducing pollution would be applauded, but instead Hightower refers to the genetically modified animals as the Frankenpig, which is every bit an silly emotional reaction as is the 'Enviropig' label which is the trademark under which the GM pig will be sold (assuming it ever becomes commercially viable). Hightower reduces the comments made by researchers who created the GM pig as, "one of the white-smocked lab guys who did the hocus-pocus on the pig genes..." Hocus pocus? Is that what we really do with genes these days? This sort of rhetoric is extremely reminiscent of a lot of the dismissive and pejorative stereotyping of biological scientists by creationists.

Though you might call it Frankenpig. The Boston Globe reports that big corporate hog producers working with Canadian scientists have financed development of a genetically-altered porker that produces a more environmentally- friendly manure. Manure is a big barrier to the expansion of massive hog factories, because swine excrete excessively, the excretion is especially stinky, and this pig stuff contaminates rivers and our other water supplies, killing fish and causing health problems. So for years the hog industrialists have sought a scientific fix, and now the biotech DNA manipulators have spliced the genes of mice and - get this - E.coli bacteria into pig genes. The result is a pig that they say can digest the polluting phosphorous that comes in its feed ration, rather than excreting the phosphorous, which then runs from these huge hog factories into area water supplies.

He contracted WDET to produce it for him this given show for him and Judy Adams from WDET recommended the Layabouts to perform music. Due to the short notice, WDET was unable to create an entire studio setup for the band. I guess it worked out, as the various band members could not drop what they were doing to participate.
