Extractions: An hour later, her car stopped. It had been so long since a machine had actually stopped working while Dania was using it that at first she was simply puzzled as it coasted to a stop. Wasn't it supposed to be different from the interminable parade of broken-down Chevys and Fords and Toyotas which sat outside cheap apartments on the back streets of Memphis, floors paved with crushed-down layers of trash, smelling of kids? She popped the hood and stepped out into the hot wind. She leaned over the shaded place where engine ought to be and was baffled. It was indeed different. There were the hoses she remembered, but everything was exceedingly clean. Several large chunks of metal she thought ought to be there were not. There was no battery, so it couldn't be out of water. The road itself was the battery. She left the hood up and went back inside and after studying the dashboard found a button labeled diagnostics. That was more like it. She pushed it. In plain language, she would have to go to a garage, or some kind of all-purpose nanotech mart that had at one time presumably existed.

Extractions: ISBN 1-85798-889-2 This reviewed first appeared in The Alien Online see also my review of Crescent City Rhapsody First off, a warning: in a review of Crescent City Rhapsody , the third book in Goonans nanotech series, I virtually had to issue a Jazz Warning for every page. Fortunately Light Music (the fourth and final book in the series) manages to reach page 338 before the J-word is mentioned, so thats a big thumbs-up for this book right from the word go. The nanotech series has been a revelatory one in my humble opinion. Although occasionally a little self-indulgent and overly flowery (pun entirely intentional), the depiction of our society transformed by new technology and by an unknown, external event is ultimately a transcendent one to rival some of the best and most demanding in this or any other genre (the nearest thing I can think of offhand is Bears excellent Blood Music ). But Im getting ahead of myself. Light Music , as you might expect from the final novel in a series, is set furthest into the future, at a time when (following the events of the previous books) nanotech has blatantly remade some parts of the world, other parts have been altered more subtly and still other parts barely at all. What has unquestionably changed the world is the continuing effect of The Silence, the as-good-as permanent blackout of all radio communications that first began in the early 21st century.
Extractions: The narrator of The Sweetheart Season, "You would do well then to keep always in mind that this is a story told by two liars. It is possible, therefore, our fictional impulses being so opposite, that we may arrive together at something clear-eyed and straightforward, the way two negative numbers multiplied together produce a positive value. If this happens it will be by accident. It is not my intention. I will go so far as to say I would consider it a disappointment." You can read this book for the sheer pleasure of the language, the effortless and continuously delightful narrative flow, the deeply ironic tone reminiscent of great American humorists such as Thurber and Parker, and the charming, lovingly (but not sentimentally) told tale of the town of Magrit, Minnesota, in 1947, when the boys were supposed to come home from the war and marry the girls they'd left behind. Except that they didn't come home to Magrit. Or if they did it was only to touch down restlessly in this place which embodied the spirit of the past, where already, beneath the surface, changes were taking place. The story: Margaret Mills was started at the turn of the century by Henry Collins, an ambitious businessman who was attracted to Magrit and the idea of manufacturing breakfast cereal by an omen. "Breakfast cereal was the wilderness, first tamed, and then eaten. It was family, it was America, it was a wholesome and American alternative to grain's other uses, a point that Henry made clear in his 1906 pamphlet
Extractions: The Bones of Time The Bones of Time opens with two tragic losses and ends in too much of a wham-bam hurry. The prologue is set in 1887, as Kaiulani Cleghorn, the last princess of Hawaii, witnesses the slow death of her mother, who has taken to her bed as if she has simply lost the will to live an affliction that was apparently common at the time of the American annexation of the islands. A holy man, a kahuna, has cursed her mother, and now he curses Kaiulani, too: to a visionary talent that will have repercussions 150 years later. The story jumps to the 2030s, when Lynn Oshima, daughter of the head of the powerful and inevitably sinister corporation Interspace, miscarries the baby whose father she had selected from a catalogue. Recovering, Lynn is given the chance to fly to Hong Kong to collect a sample of Chairman Mao's genetic material. It's tempting she already has Lenin, Indira Ghandi, Teddy Roosevelt and a job lot of ayatollahs in her collection but it's risky, too. Anything her brothers arrange for her to do is likely to be risky. And usually illegal.

Extractions: Title: Author: Publisher: Crescent City Rhapsody is the third book by author Kathleen Ann Goonan , though works as a prelude to her first novel Queen City Jazz. Queen City Jazz was set in a future where cities have been replaced by the smart flower cities - cities which combine nano tech with pheremonology, using bees and flowers to carry information and working with nano where in the bodies of the inhabitants. The story itself deals with a girl who comes to the city gone out of control and her experiences there. QCJ flows well and follows a solid plot - leading to a really enjoyable work. With CCR however it is clear that Goonan has gone back in time, resulting in a starting point a few years in our future. From this point it builds up to the events which force the human race into having to create alternative technologies and how those technologies grew and the responses to that. To achieve this however, the flow of CCR is a lot more fractured that QCJ - following a group of characters over a course of years as they deal with various aspects of the bigger picture.

Extractions: The Bones of Time, Kathleen Ann Goonan, Voyager, £6.99, 382pp Lynn Oshima is rich, egotistical and an obsessive collector of DNA (shes got Stalins and now she wants Maos). Cen is a brilliant Hawaiian mathematician who fakes a drink problem (hes got his reasons). And Princess Kaiulani is, well, dead really... The Bones of Time is not just staggeringly good SF its big - big science, big plot, big characters and a vast sweep across multiverses that takes in American colonialism, Hawaiian history and the true shape of time - all in less than 400 pages. But the really neat trick is that this vast sweep is done in small scenes and small rooms, like a fog-bound English pub on the edge of the Thames where the world outside is either 19th or 21st Century depending on which character is looking out of the window. Theres no doubt that The Bones of Time is a novel of ideas rather than action. True there are evil corporations conducting illegal gene experiments, corrupt politicians and mean streets a plenty. Heroes get shot, children get hunted down or chased through wild mountain passes... And yet, it is the search for a mathematical proof that really drives the narrative. A proof that is - in some quantum way - connected to the Hawaiian ability to navigate vast stretches of ocean without maps, just by imagining that the boat is held static and it is the sky that moves.
