Extractions: A new day is dawning for alluring, Grammy-winning international movie star Janice-Marie . The Los Angeles native, who rose to fame as the leader of a group A Taste of Honey in the 70's with the multi-million sellers "Boogie Oogie Oogie" and "Sukiyaki," has enjoyed tremendous success from her natural knack for bridging musical and cultural boundaries via her composing, singing and bass playing skills. Now, after stepping away from the spotlight to marry and raise a beautiful son (who is already revealing instinctual musical aptitude), Janice Marie returns to the pop music world in the new millennium with deeper inspiration than ever before...an inspiration seeded in her Native American roots. As a girl, Janice-Marie Johnson was fascinated by stories her mother shared with her concerning their Indian heritage. However, after recent studies with historians Mercedes Wallace, Clarence Cameron and Robert Tree Cody, Janice-Marie discovered her specific ties to the Stockbridge-Munsee Tribe of Wisconsin. This connection became warmly and profoundly solidified when she attended a Pow Wow in Gallup, New Mexico. Through her embracing of her people's songs and dance, the spirit of this ancient ancestors impacted her heart, mind and soul. As gesture of gratitude to all of the people who took part in that magical weekend, Janice-Marie composed the song "

Scotland In Sweden - Homepage Kate Clanchy Roddy Lumsden. Clockwise from topleft Kevin MacNeil,Jackie Kay, janice galloway, Alan Warner. Literature Events. http://www.scotlandinsweden.com/literature.html
Extractions: 4 November Two Scottish poets will be performing at this year's Stockholm Poetry Festival. Kate Clanchy's latest work is called Samarkand . It begins on a train where the author confronts her Scottish inheritance (Kate Clanchy was born in Glasgow in 1965). The book plots its way through colonial Australia, France and London, as well as her childhood, grandparents and school. It finishes with a eulogy to a new-found love . It's a collection of poetry that is full of surprises and for which Kate was awarded the prestigious Forward Prize in 1999. Roddy Lumsden made his debut in 1997 with the critically acclaimed Yeah Yeah Yeah (Bloodaxe), which was later followed by The Book of Love (Bloodaxe 2000). Lumsden's poems often develop into voyeuristic tales and observations of individuals on the fringes of society: porn stars, alcoholics, and flashers. If one were to be as bold as to suppose that his poetry is a blissful combination of TS Eliot and The Smiths , or Philip Larkin and David Bowie , one wouldn't be far off the mark.

Extractions: Imagining the Nation in an age of Globalization This course looks at the representation of Scotland and Scottishness in contemporary fiction, poetry and film by artists residing both in and outside of Scotland. We begin with a well-known novel by Irvine Welsh, Trainspotting then move on to consider the work of the work of lesser known Scottish writers: novelist Janice Galloway, short story writer AL Kennedy and poets Robert Crawford, Liz Lochhead, Kathleen Jamie and others. We next study two novels by Canadian writers Audrey Thomas and Alistair MacLeod which consider the Scottish diaspora in Canada. Finally, we will address the imagining of Scotland by the movie industry, turning our attention to the films Trainspotting and Braveheart. Although the course focuses on Scotland, a number of the questions we will be asking will have relevance to our own situation as Canadians: what is national identity? What purposes does the expression of national identity serve? How does the contemporary interest in national identity relate to the increase in globalization? What kinds of expectations are brought to bear on nations by members of other nations? What is the relation of the nation to the members of its diaspora? What role do the members of a diaspora play in the creation of national identity? What is the relation of diaspora to transnationalism?
