MousePlanet.com | Dual ReViews Two contrasting reviews.Category Arts Literature Authors F fjellman, stephen M. line , The ultimate informed Disney consumer? Reviewed Vinyl Leavesstephen M. fjellman, Oxford Westview Press, 1992. ALEX, KEVIN. http://www.mouseplanet.com/alex/vinyl.htm
Extractions: Oxford: Westview Press, 1992 ALEX KEVIN In Stephen Fjellman's view of the world everything has been reduced to a commodity and everyone into a consumer. Fortunately for us - the reader - Fjellman is an informed consumer. What this means is that while he consumes with the rest of us, he sees through all the crap. Even better, he is willing to guide us through Walt Disney World lifting all the stones and showing us the myriad ways we are being manipulated. It's not clear to me from your intro - which I agree with by the way - whether you disliked this book as much as I did. I see Fjellman doing one of three things at various points in his book: either waxing incredibly pretentious in his academic-inquiry mode, engaging in small-scale throwaway analyses that don't link up to his central theses, or just in essence mimicking a travelogue (describing WDW and its rides in detail). All of this is problematic, but my basic complaint is the book's ambition: who is the target audience? academics or general audience? He provides some for both but not enough to keep either happy.

Extractions: After Walt died in 1966, his chief executives were escorted to assigned seats in the company screening room. There they were shown a film that Walt had made before he died in which he spoke to each of them by name and told them all what he expected them to do for the next five years. Origins: Such is Walt Disney's reputation as a keen visionary who mastered futuristic projects down the smallest details (and a somewhat secretive figure to boot) that several prominent legends continue to circulate which credit him with formulating long-range plans extending even beyond the grave: He arranged to have himself frozen after death so that he might be revived when science found a cure for the illness that killed him, he included all sorts of minutiae in his will (such as a list of Disney films that should never be released on video, even though the home video market was years away), and he prepared a film to be viewed post-mortem in which he gave instructions to Disney executives about how to run the company in his absence. The reality, however, is that all of these legends are most un characteristic of Walt Disney, who left the business aspects of running the company up to his brother Roy and gave little or no thought to what would happen to it after his death.

Extractions: Thirty years ago, a corporation mascoted by a mouse took up residence in central Florida on a parcel of land twice the size of Manhattan, extracting from the state government exemptions from building and safety codes, permissions to operate its own police force and to issue tax-free municipal bonds, and even, should it ever be deemed necessary, the concession to build its own nuclear power plant. All this was plotted by an organization synonymous with children's entertainment. Few educated people will find this so terribly surprising, and thus may find a 400-page elaboration on this point less than enthralling. Fjellman's book does, however, provide a diverting primer to applied cultural anthropology - an application of anthropological theory to a place with which most of us are already intimately familiar, but have never examined as text. Walt Disney World is much more, however, than a gigantic commercial. WDW embodies a culture of its own that is not randomly organic but carefully planned. "A good way to make sure that people police themselves is to get them to believe essentially the same stories about what the world is": WDW is the most successful and complex site of indoctrination into the consumerist culture of commodified existence that is the late-twentieth century. It is where we learn to be Americans.

Tiptree's first novel, Up the Walls of the World (1978), and two of her short stories, "Love is the Plan, the Plan is Death" (1973) and "A Momentary Taste of Being" (1975), can be taken as representative of the particular feminist point of view of her fiction generally and of her manner of dramatizing it in terms of communal mergers and biological alterations. What especially merits attention in these regards are the adult human gametes and male matriarchs who figure in her stories as the outcome of fantastic anatomical changes. Considering these matters also provides an occasion for demonstrating how feminist SF can be illuminated by feminist criticismin this case, through the encounter between Tiptree and Judith Fetterly. By reversing sex roles (in having "females do the Fathering," for example) while insisting that equality between men and women is impossible, Tiptree's fantastic worlds serve to clarify relationships between genders in the real world.
