Jessie Lime Fenton Elijah McLean Fenton, Sr. Elijah McLean Fenton Sr., a Presbyterian minister and civil engineer from Missouri, came to New Mexico in 1881 as a missionary. He first worked in Mora, NM, where he met his wife, Jessie Lime. He was later transferred to Corrales where he and Jessie were married. In 1892, he was stationed at the Jemez Pueblo where Jessie was able to continue her work as a school teacher. In order to supplement his meager salary as a missionary, Elijah worked for the government making land surveys. Meanwhile, en route between his parishes in Cuba, Regina, and Jemez Springs, he discovered areas that were open for homesteading along Cebolla Creek, the creek that now feeds into Fenton Lake. In 1892, Fenton filed claim on 160 acres near the present location of Fenton Lake, and in 1897, retired as a missionary to work full-time as a rancher and surveyor. He increased his land holdings to a total of 640 acres by buying the homesteads of other relatives. In 1913, he subdivided his plots and sold 5 acre lots for summer camping and cabin sites. Fenton made various changes to the environment near Cebolla Creek. He built a stock pond near the present location of Fenton Lake, as well as a fish pond further upstream. He and Jessie had two children

Extractions: This Cemetery was originally named Chandlers Corners Cemetery by the people who settled the area. The Church located next to the Cemetery was later moved to Pitcher and the Cemetery took on the name of the farm where Cemetery was located. The Hinman Cemetery is located in Pitcher on the East side of County Road 26, just North of its junction with the Hakes-Calhoun-Davis Road. It is a Cemetery of roughly rectangular shape, approximately 150x164 feet. The earliest known burial is 1803 and the latest 1916. The data presented for this cemetery is extracted (with minor corrections) from the booklet Gone But Not Forgotten , by Thomas Lloyd; it is used with the kind permission of the City of Norwich which had authorized the work. The survey was published in 1981. Since the survey was limited to recording the markers and stones present only, Lloyd did not attempt to verify or research the burials. Hence, there are some 14 burials he recorded as "unknown" where either the headstone was missing or unreadable. In the data given below, a column is included that is headed "location". This is a reference to the author's system of gridlines that is used to identify a unique 20'x20' square area within the cemetery. These locations are included to give the researcher an idea of where a grave is placed in relations to others. A family, for instance, will usually be buried within a small area, whereas others with a similar surname will probably be some distance away. In a similar vein, a husband and wife may share a "double headstone;" families may be listed on monuments, etc.

Using these fine opportunities, the Fen folk have long cultivated the science of campanology.. FENTON, ELIJAH (16831730), English poet, was born at Shelton near Newcastle-under-Lyme, of an old Staffordshire family, on the 25th of May 1683. He graduated from Jesus College, Cambridge, in 1704, but was prevented by religious scruples from taking orders. He accompanied the earl of Orrery to Flanders as private secretary, and on returning to England became assistant in a school at Headley, Surrey, being soon afterwards appointed master of the free grammar school at Sevenoaks in Kent. In 1710 he resigned his appointment in the expectation of a place from Lord Bolingbroke, but was disappointed. He then became tutor to Lord Broghill, son of his patron Orrery. Fenton is remembered as the coadjutor of Alexander Pope in his translation of the Odyssey. He was responsible for the first, fourth, nineteenth and twentieth hooks, for which he received ~3oo. He died at East Hampstead, Berkshire, on the 16th of July 1730. He was buried in the parish church, and his epitaph was written by Pope.
