Her parents were married when her father was an undergraduate and only 19 years of age, and the success of their marriage seems to have been greatly influenced by those facts. However, five children were born of their union: a son, Richard, in 1766, Maria in 1767, two daughters, Anna and Emmeline, and an infant which died young. Her mother died when Maria was six, shortly after the birth of her last child, and Maria's only recollection of her was having been led into the sickroom to receive her mother's dying kiss. The duty of "mother" fell on Miss Honora Sneyd, the first of Maria's three stepmothers. Sneyd was known for her beauty and it is said that Maria, when she was about seven, was standing next to Sneyds dressing table when she looked up at her and was suddenly and irresistibly compelled to exclaim "How beautiful!" Maria always attempted to be a dutiful daughter, despite the seemingly endless parade of ever-younger stepmothersthe last of whom was actually younger than herselfwhich began only four months after the death of her mother and resulted in the births of 16 stepchildren. Maria was sent to school in Derby when she was seven, and remained there until she was 14. Exactly what her experiences were there are unclear, but it is obvious that the carefree little girl who once cut the squares out of the couch upholstery was "properly" subdued and refined. Her father placed the utmost importance on education and wished for Maria to contribute something of substance to the world, so she was sent to the more prestigious school run by Mrs. Davis in Upper Wimpole Street, London.

Her novels and stories fall into three categories: sketches of Irish life, commentary on contemporary English society, and instruction in children's moral training. Published between 1796 and 1834, her work is characterized by both a Scott-like Romantic attachment to the past and an Austenian wit and rationalism. The English-born Edgeworth was the second of 21 children (by four wives). Her father was Richard Lovell Edgeworth, who held both an Irish estate and progressive ideas on education, particularly on the shortcomings of female education. Maria Edgeworth was schooled in Derby, England, and then in London. Her father believed that education was central to the construction of the "new" individual of the 18th century, who would rise on merit rather than birth an idea derived from and also spurring the revolutions in politics and philosophy in the late 1700s. In 1782, Edgeworth went to live with her father at Edgeworthstown in Ireland to serve as his property manager. Here she collected material for her novels about Irish landlords and peasants, but she also ingested his theories of education. Thirteen years later, Maria Edgeworth's first published work appeared: "Letters for Literary Ladies," a plea for women's education reform. She would later collaborate with her father on

Her mother died when she was only six years old and she was sent to school in Derby when she was seven and remained their until she was fourteen. Her father placed much importance on his daughters education, hoping she would be able to contribute something of substance to the world. While attending school Maria became a extraordinary story-teller and writer. She stayed on at home with her family, and her father assisted in developing her talent. When she was fifteen years old her father inherited Edgeworthstown, the family estate in Ireland, where they moved. There in Ireland, under her fathers direction, she pursued her studies, formed habits of sharp observation, and developed a cheerfulness that always made her beloved in society. Maria acted as his chief assistant and secretary in the management of his estates and it was here that she gained the intimate knowledge of Irish peasant life that was the basis of many of her novels.

Her father was Member of Parliament for Edgeworthstown, County Longford, and she became his chief assistant in running his estate and took a major part in educating his many other children. Her works expressed many ideas on education and society, showing clearly the influence of her father's unusually progressive views on such subjects, drawing ultimately on Rousseau's Emile, but exploring them in her own manner. Her first novel, Castle Rackrent, was an immediate success, and Sir Walter Scott acknowledged that he attempted "in some distant degree to emulate the admirable Irish portraits drawn by Miss Edgeworth." With her father, she composed An Essay on Irish Bulls, and they continued to collaborate in her later work, for which he suggested plots and even wrote sections of the narrative for inclusion. She broadened her knowledge of the world by visiting Brussles and Paris in 1802, and turned down a proposal of marriage from a Swedish aristocrat out of a sense of duty to her family. Apart from her novels of Irish life, she wrote other stories for and about children, and her Practical Education, written with her father, was well before its time in recommending play and spontaneity as necessary elements of childhood. After her father's death in 1817, she wrote little more, but continued to manage the family estate with great skill. During the Irish Famine of 1845-7, she worked energetically to relieve the plight of the starving poor. She died at the family home in Edgeworthstown fifteen years after the publication of her last novel.

Extractions: On a May day in 1849, Maria Edgeworth was laid to rest in a vault of Edgeworthstown Church. The great famine which decimated the people she loved marred her last years. Even though in her late seventies, no-one had worked more strenuously or with such hospitality and kindness as she had worked for the relief of the stricken peasants at the height of the famine. She had shown the same involvement and generosity throughout her entire life and had devoted her best talents to the betterment of the people of her adoption. Maria Edgeworth's books on the Irish people brought her world fame and the acclaim of such writers as Sir Walter Scott, Jane Austen, Byron and the Russian writer Turgenev. The second child of Richard Lovell Edgeworth , Maria was born on New Year's Day 1767, at Blackbourton, Oxfordshire. She was sent to school at Derby until when she was 14. The death of her mother at this time brought Edgeworth and his eldest daughter closer together. He wanted her to contribute something to the world (he himself was an inventor, road builder, politician, educationalist and writer) . He was determined that Maria would "have a tincture of every species of literature, and form a taste by choice and not by chance." Thus after Derby she went to school in London. In 1782 she came to Edgeworthstown with her father and acted as his chief assistant and secretary in the management of his estates here. She gained the intimate knowledge of Irish peasant life that was to form the backbone of her novels. She helped to educate her brothers and sisters, and the stories she invented for them were later published and sold well

Extractions: Maria Edgeworth [1767 - 1849] Maria Edgeworth was born in Oxfordshire, at the home of her grandparents, but spent most of her life in Ireland on her father's estate. Her early efforts at fiction were melodramatic, one of her schoolgirl novels featuring a villian who wore a mask made from the skin of a dead man's face. She grew up in the landed gentry of Ireland, with the families of Kitty Pakenham (later Wellington's wife), Lady Moira, and her aunt Margaret Ruston at Black Castle for company. She acted as manager of her father's estate, later drawing on this experience for her novels about the Irish. In 1802 the Edgeworths went abroad, first to Brussels and then to France (during the Peace of Amiens, that brief lull in the Napoleanic wars). They met all the notables, and Maria recieved a marriage proposal from a Swedish count. They returned to Ireland and Maria returned to writing. After her father's death in 1817 she edited his memoirs, and extended them with her biographical comments. She was an active writer to the last, and worked strenously for the relief of the famine-stricken Irish peasants during 1845. Mr. Edgeworth, a well-know author and inventor, encouraged his daughter's career, and has been criticized for his insistence on approving and editing her work. The tales in

Extractions: Maria Edgeworth and Classical Political Economy William Kern, Western Michigan University Amongst economists the name Edgeworth is a familiar one owing to the significant contributions of the British neoclassical economist Francis Ysidro Edgeworth. But what is less well known is that F. Y. Edgeworth was not the first in the Edgeworth family to have a considerable interest in economics. His aunt, the Victorian author, Maria Edgeworth (1767-1849), could claim the title of the first political economist in the Edgeworth family. Maria was born in England, though she lived most of her life in Ireland. The family had owned property in Ireland for nearly two centuries when on Maria's fifteenth birthday her father, Richard Edgeworth, moved his family to the family mansion at Edgeworthstown. Edgeworthstown was her home until her death in 1847. The family estate was a large one involving a myriad of activities including the assignment of leases, the collection of rents, and the improvement of the land. In addition, as the most significant property owner in the hamlet, her faather also had a degree of political influence and obligations. As one of the eldest of the twenty-two children which Richard Edgeworth fathered, considerable responsibility fell to Maria both in conducting the affairs of the estate and in educating her siblings. She was, in the words of one of her biographers, "his right hand." As a result, she acquired a familiarity with economic and political matters rare for a woman of her age.
