Extractions: Dodgson, Charles Lutwidge (1832-1898) After three years at Rugby, Dodgson matriculated in 1850 at Christ Church, where he lived almost uninterrruptedly until his death. In 1854 he was placed in the first class in the Final Mathematical School; the next year he became a lecturer in Mathematics, and in 1861 he was ordained Deacon. Intensely shy, his most initmate friends were little girls, of whom he took many photographs. He contributed verse to The Train , a periodical edited by Edmund Yates, who chose Lewis Carroll from four suggested pseudonyms proposed by his contributor - Lewis being derived from Lutwidge by way of Ludovicus and Carroll from Charles (Carolus). Under this name Dodgson wrote Alice's Adventrues in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking-glass and What Alice Found There (1871). He also wrote on mathematical subjects, his Euclid and His Modern Rivals appearing in 1879. Extractions: T he parish at Daresbury and its church of All Saints , not far from here, were in the 1830's and early '40s in the care of a poor but learned Perpetual Curate, Charles Dodgson. Despite the typical stringencies of the life of an Anglican clergyman, his family prospered, and when a first son was born on 27th January 1832, there were already two sisters, with five to follow, as well as three more brothers to come. Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (Lutwidge was his mother's maiden name) is - as Lewis Carroll - perhaps Daresbury's most famous son (even allowing for synchrotrons The first panel has the White Rabbit and, appropriately, the Dodo, (Bill the lizard makes his usual brief entrance - or is it exit?). The second panel is reproduced in my photograph above: the third is a version of that A simple inscription in the first panel states that the window is "In memory of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (Lewis Carroll) author of Alice in Wonderland". The fifth panel records "He was born at Daresbury parsonage, Jan. 27, 1832, and died at Guildford, Jan. 14 1898" The verses in the other three panels (beginning with the caterpillar) are from one of Carroll's less well know poems, called "Christmas Greetings (from a fairy to a child)" Here's the whole of it...

Like many of the Dodgson children, Charles stuttered fairly badly, something he never quite got rid of in spite of years of effort and even consultations with noted speech therapists of the day. In spite of this, Charles was comfortable playing with and even coining new words. He attended Rugby school from 1846 to 1850, and was quite a good student, especially in mathematics. The following year, he began attending Christ Church, Oxford, his father's alma mater. Two days after he started, his mother died. His mother's younger sister, Lucy Lutwidge, moved in to help care for the family, and soon grew much beloved. Charles received his degree with a first in mathematics in 1854. In spite of his stutter, he enjoyed teaching math , and this helped him gain enough confidence to later deliver sermons as well. Charles was at this time under a studentship, which meant he would continue to study and teach at Christ Church for the rest of his life, and he was expected to remain single and also to take holy orders at some point. Already Charles was getting various poems and short stories published in magazines. About 1855, he wrote a "Stanza of Anglo-Saxon Poetry" which would later become better known as the first four lines of Jabberwocky. Charles was very hard working and organized, which enabled him to write a great deal even though he was now Mathematical Lecturer and basically in charge of the whole math department.

Extractions: A shy, retiring batchelor, he was happiest in the company of children, and his favourite was Alice Liddell, daughter of the Dean of Christ Church. A keen amateur photographer, he took many pictures of Alice and her sisters and they often accompanied him on outings around the town and boat trips along the river. On the 4th of July 1862, Dodgson and his friend Duckworth treated the three older Liddell sisters to a boating trip up the river Isis for a picnic at Godstow Lock. There he told the story of "Alices' Adventures Underground", weaving into it many of the places and things which they'd seen on their days out around Oxford. Alice was enchanted by the story and begged him to write it down. By the following February Dodgson had written a first draft, and decided to publish it as "Alices' Adventures in Wonderland". As with the follow-up story, "Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There", Dodgson adopted the pen-name "Lewis Carroll" and, although he wrote a wide range of other books, including many on the subject of advanced mathematics, it's probably these two for which he'll best be remembered. Surprisingly, except for the rather dense "Sylvie and Bruno", Dodgson never wrote another successful childrens book.

The son of a clergyman, Carroll was the third child born to a family of eleven children. From a very early age he entertained himself and his family by performing magic tricks and marionette shows, and by writing poetry for his homemade newspapers. In 1846 he entered Rugby School, and in 1854 he graduated from Christ Church College, Oxford. He was successful in his study of mathematics and writing, and remained at the college after graduation to teach. His mathematical writings include An Elementary Treatise on Determinants Euclid and His Modern Rivals (1879), and Curiosa Mathematica (1888). While teaching, Carroll was ordained as a deacon; however, he never preached. He also began to pursue photography, often choosing children as the subject of his portraits. One of his favorite models was a young girl named Alice Liddell, the daughter of the Dean at Christ's Church, who later became the basis for Carroll's fictional character, Alice. He abandoned both photography and public speaking between 1880 and 1881, and focused on his writing. Many of Lewis Carroll's philosophies were based on games. His interest in logic came purely from the playful nature of its principle rather than its uses as a tool. He primarily wrote comic fantasies and humorous verse that was often very childlike. You should read "In the Shadow of the Dreamchild" by Karoline Leach - it's a great book. It reads like a detective story and separates all the many myths about Lewis Carroll from the truth, and shows everyone's had it pretty wrong about him. It's also gor some great investiagtion of the mysterious missing pages in his diary and how they came to be cut out. Unlike most of the other amateurs in his circle, he persevered to become a dedicated, prolific, and remarkably gifted photographer, creating approximately 3,000 images during his twenty-five years of photographic activity. This handsomely designed volume makes clear the remarkable extent and complexity of Carroll's photographic art. It publishes for the first time the world's finest and most extensive collection of Carroll photographs, many of which have never been reproduced before and are unknown even to committed Carroll enthusiasts. Roger Taylor's thorough and sophisticated discussion of Carroll as a photographic artist and as a prominent member of Victorian society reveals the man as never before, illuminating his relationships with the children he photographed in light of the idealism and social conventions of the day.
