Jenny Uglow's recent book on The Lunar Men (see our review ), and perhaps Desmond King-Hele's own biography (promising: Erasmus Darwin: a Life of Unequalled Achievement ) might help convince readers that the fascinating figure of Erasmus is worthy of their attention. (Better still, of course, would be the re-publication of Erasmus Darwin's own work, but that still seems unlikely.) The publication of this book, the first unabridged edition of the more famous Darwin's biographical work on his grandfather might also help, though it is really more of a literary curiosity than the in-depth introduction Erasmus deserves.

Explore the Birmingham Jewellery Quarter ERASMUS DARWIN Erasmus Darwin was a genius, but more than that, he was a character. He was enormously fat, he was talkative, he was witty, he stammered. He was restless, creative, inventive. As a poet he was admired by Coleridge, Wordsworth and the Shelleys; as a botanist he published a theory of evolution sixty years before his grandson, Charles; as a scientist he was the first to propound two of the fundamental laws of gases, to explain how clouds form and how artesian wells work. He fathered fourteen children, including two whilst he was 'between wives' (his first wife having died in childbirth). But all that was just in his spare time; he earned his living as a good, caring and compassionate doctor, tirelessly travelling 10,000 miles a year on the terrible roads of eighteenth century England to attend his patients. Erasmus Darwin was born in 1731 at Elston, near Newark. His father was a lawyer. He was educated at Cambridge and Edinburgh Universities, the latter having at that time the leading medical school in the British Isles. Having tried and failed to establish a medical practice in Nottingham, he moved to Lichfield in 1756. Shortly after his arrival there he saved the life of a young gentleman by means of a novel course of treatment and from then on, the success of his practice was assured. The following year he married Mary (Polly) Howard, by whom he had four sons and a daughter. The youngest of those sons, Robert, was to become Charles Darwin's father. The family moved to a big house on the edge of the Cathedral close in Lichfield, which is now open to the public as the

A highly-regarded doctor - George III asked him to be his physician, but Erasmus declined - critically-acclaimed poet, ahead-of-his-time inventor and dedicated botanist, Erasmus brought tremendous enthusiasm and intelligence to all his multifarious pursuits. As a leading light of the Lunar Society his close friends and associates included Josiah Wedgwood Mathew Boulton and James Watt , as well as the philosopher and statesman Benjamin Franklin and artist Joseph Wright Erasmus came up with a coherent theory of evolution a full 70 years before Charles turned his mind to it. He expounded this in his extraordinary book Zoonomia or the Laws of Organic Life which, first published in 1794, took him 25 years to write and also includes a comprehensive classification of diseases and treatments. Although the whole project appears somewhat eccentric to a twenty-first century reader, the book was, in its time, extremely well-received. One reviewer claimed that Zoonomia 'bids fair to do for Medicine what Sir Isaac Newton's Principia has done for Natural Philosophy.' It didn't, but it was a nice thought.

The House is currently being established as a museum and is also used for social/educational events. The Foundation includes representatives of the Darwin family, The Royal Society, The Royal College of Physicians of London, The Royal Society of Medicine (History of Medicine Section), The Faculty of the History and Philosophy of Medicine and Pharmacy of the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries of London, The Dean and Chapter of Lichfield Cathedral and other local people. The Cathedral authorities have leased Darwin House to the Foundation.

He was a man of great and varied talent, but some of his opinions were deemed extravagantly eccentric. His "Botanic Garden" was admired as a fine specimen of polished verse, and his "Zoonomia," or "The Laws of Organic Life," was admitted to be ingenious, though built upon an hypothesis which was repudiated as absurd. Before publication in 1879, it was shortened by 16%, with several of the cuts directed at its most provocative parts. The cutter, with Charless permission, was his daughter Henrietta - an example of the strong hidden hand of meek-seeming Victorian women. This first unabridged edition, edited by Desmond King-Hele, includes all that Charles originally intended, the cuts being restored and printed in italics. Erasmus Darwin was one of the leading intellectuals of the eighteenth century. He was a respected physician, a well-known poet, a keen mechanical inventor, and a founding member of the influential Lunar Society. He also possessed an amazing insight into the many branches of physical and biological science. The University of Houston's College of Engineering presents this series about the machines that make our civilization run, and the people whose ingenuity created them. P oets sang along with the Industrial Revolution like a Greek chorus. Long before anyone saw how far the Revolution would finally reach, writers began celebrating the engines that gave it birth. A popular poem written by John Dalton in the mid-1700s praised an early steam-engine maker: Man's richest gift thy work will shine: Rome's aqueducts were poor to thine! And John Dyer wrote about the new spinning machines. "Art," he said, ... has a spiral engine form'd, With one huge wheel, by lapse of water, twines. By 1800 the mood was changing. As the machines belched out soot and smoke, the watching poets objected. William Blake, like many others, drew images from Milton's apocalyptic Paradise Lost . In a poem titled Milton , God speaks to Satan and says, Pretty heavy stuff! Poets were hurling some harsh weapons at the new machines. But not all.
