His father, with degrees in both philosophy and divinity, taught at Harvard University until 1900 when he received ordination by the Unitarian Church and became a pastor at the South Congregational Church of Boston. According to family diaries, Cummings wanted to be a poet from an early age. He was supported in this ambition by his mother who made up word games and other activities to encourage his creativity. Cummings also drew prolifically, and his childhood drawings were often inspired by literature; his drawings included storyboards. Cummings attended public schools, including the Cambridge High and Latin School, prior to entering Harvard in 1911. While there, he concentrated in the classics, including Latin, Greek, and literature, and he mastered the various forms of poetry, gaining the foundation he needed in order to begin the experimentation with poetic form and shape that became his trademark.

Extractions: Edward Estlin Cummings was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts on October 14, 1894. He earned a BA from Harvard and volunteered to go to France during World War I with the Ambulance Corps. After the war, he stayed in Paris, writing and painting, and later returned to the US. He died in Conway, New Hampshire, in 1962. Cummings is one of the most innovative contemporary poets, though in some ways is oddly traditional. He drops or distorts punctuation and syntax, but at the same time uses rhymes and off-rhymes more characteristic of earlier styles. Extractions: My favorite voice-over actor, other than Christine Cavanaugh , of course, Jim Cummings is my current obsession, along with Darkwing Duck. I first became interested in Mr. Cummings while watching Darkwing Duck, one of my childhood faves that just went back into syndication. I had already started voice chasing by that time, and was watching the credits, when I saw his name flash by. Where have I heard the name Jim Cummings before? I asked no one in particular. My sister, who, at the time, was more of a voice chaser than myself (if that is humanly possible), said that she didnt know, but it sounded familiar. The next week, having forgotten the aforementioned night, I was watching Cat-Dog, and, when the credits came on, asked the same question. Eventually, I put two and two together, and realized they sounded faintly similar to the guard on Aladdin, which I soon learned was him, also. Since then, I have found several DW and Jim Cummings web pages that have pushed me farther into my obsession. Its surprising how many people my age, and older, truly adore Darkwing. "Darkwing Duck and Don Karnage are the most fun to do, because they're both probably the closest to me I kinda improvise a lot of them, kinda ad lib."
