A means of practicing freedom.” — Jane Cooper Jane Cooper , poet, essayist and teacher, was born on October 9, 1924 in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and was raised in Jacksonville, Florida. A New York City resident since 1951, Cooper attended first Vassar College and, after a hiatus created by the appearance of a lifelong disability, primary immune deficiency, received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1946. In the summer of 1947 she traveled through postwar Europe, visiting the war-ravaged ruins of St. Malo, and eventually studying at Oxford. All the while she developed poems and kept meticulous journals which would become the foundation of her later work, including the 1974 autobiographical study titled ironically (echoing a postwar Parisian sign): “Nothing Has Been Used in the Manufacture of This Poetry That Could Have Been Used in the Manufacture of Bread.” There, reflecting on what might have been her first book of poetry, Cooper acknowledged the gaps between her father’s world of safely projected maps and the world she had witnessed: “the first silk I saw after five years of wartime was a parachutist’s landing chart made into a woman’s headscarf. . . .”

   Extractions: Southern Muse Legend J ane Blevins of Sand Mountain, Alabama, married Isaac Cooper. They had William Cooper, who was the father of Peter Cooper (born May 9th, 1843). Jane's husband, Isaac, fought in the Mexican Wars and died in the service of his country. Jane applied for pension based on Isaac's service. A researcher once told me, jokingly, that Jane and Peter Cooper must have been some piece of work. "They applied for everything coming and going," she said. To me, the pensions tell another storyone of government red tape. It must have been difficult for poor Jane, Isaac's widow, to constantly worry over getting her meager pension reinstated. Every time it needed renewal, she had to gather proofs, bring together witnesses, and beg for legal assistance in getting the letters writtenonly to have the government lose them, apparentlyso that she had to do it all over again. I have been conducting a programme of research that has looked at the ability of host animals to detect and avoid parasites in their environment. I have also investigated the use of anthelmintic plants by animals. I know this is not really the area that Wormwood is concerned with but I do maintain stocks of Ostertagia circumcincta and Trichostrongylus colubriformis if this is of help to any one.

After the game, the team will have a pizza party and get their trophies!! The Varsity Girls have a home game against Greenwood Christian School on March 27 at 7 PM, followed by three away games: West-Oak on March 31 at 4:30 PM, Greenwood Christian on April 1 at 4 PM, and Ninety-Six at 5 PM on April 3.
