Talbot This article was adapted from a paper given at the SPEAKING SCIENCE FICTION Conference at the University of Liverpool (11-13 July 1996) by Mary Talbot. Octavia Butler gives a new slant to the alien human encounter in her Xenogenesis series of books, where the aliens are genetic engineers and gene traders. But is it a more optimistic view of humanity? DIFFERENCE-EMBRACING ALIENS Octavia Butler uses sf to explore cultural possibilities, rather than scientific and technological ones. She writes about class divisions, particularly racism and sexism, about slavery and the power relationships nurtured by such an institution. She writes, too, about unrealised human potential, largely in terms of latent mental abilities. Her stories usually involve a motley group of culturally diverse people striving to form a community. These observations are true of the Patternist books, of Kindred and The Parable of the Sower (except I dont think Parable shares the preoccupation with slavery). They are elements that are all manifest in her Xenogenesis books. From the outset, Humans are a degraded people, to say the least. Before the narrative begins, humanity is on the point of extinction as a result of nuclear war in the northern hemisphere. The few lingering remnants are dying in the nuclear winter. They are rescued by aliens and put on ice; that is, restored to health and kept in suspended animation. Until Needed. The aliens, called Oankali, are gene traders. More than this, they are gene manipulators. The Xenogenesis series is about the human race which, having all but wiped itself out, is being given a second chance as trading partners, as the Oankali cutely put it; that is, as breeding stock for a genetically-engineered new species combining Human and Oankali. The Humans are not keen on the idea (But it wont be human [...] It will be a thing. A monster (Dawn p262)). The remnants of humanity are given a Hobsons Choice between extinction and compliance. They are reduced to no more than livestock, experimental animals.

Nancy Lebovitz, rasfw Review: Octavia Butler manages to evoke a vivid image of civilisation caught mid-decline. Rather than the more usual post-apocalypse novel, this depicts a slow but inevitable descent into barbarism, where enough of the old world is still around for people to realise what they're losing. It's brilliantly, if grimly, depicted, by following the viewpoint of Lauren Olamina as she grows to adulthood through various crises. Interwoven with this is her development of a new religion, Earthseed. I'm not too keen on the religion side of it (although I have a feeling that it is supposed to be the important point), but the grimly painted future and the gutsy, competent protagonist make this a memorable read.

Extractions: Apocalyptic Fiction I became interested in fiction that deals with the end of society as we know it when I read Stephen King's The Stand. I recently realized that I was not alone in this interest through the discovery of two web pages covering the topic of apocalyptic fiction. I developed my own list through pilfering said pages and from recommendations by friends and librarians. Extractions: Born in 1947, Octavia E. Butler established herself in the SF field beginning in the 1970s with the publication of her Patternist series. As one of the first African-American science fiction writers, and indeed one of a few women breaking the formidable SF gender barrier, she brought a fresh new voice to the genre. She is now regarded as one of the best writers in the business. Her books tend to focus on the nature of difference, and she has written some of the most convincing portrayals of truly alien life forms in science fiction. The Earthseed series, which began with Parable of the Sower and continues in Parable of the Talents , tells the story of the genesis of a simple, humanist religion Earthseed in a dystopian near-future Earth. One of the central tenets of Earthseed is that humanity's destiny is to leave Earth and become a starfaring race. I attended undergrad in Massachusetts at Wheaton College , a small (then women's) liberal arts college, where I began my work in American Studies/Literature. I also participated in the Wheaton Chorale and acted as a peer tutor for the English Department. After Wheaton, I went to Purdue University for my master's and doctoral degrees. I received my Ph.D. from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana in May, 1999 in American Studies. My major field is contemporary American literature, and I have secondary fields in pre-1865 American literature, womens history, and womens studies. I am heading to California State University, Sacramento, this summer (2001) to teach in their Humanities/Religious Studies program. I will be teaching multicultural studies, film, and western civilization. My past experience includes the following: I taught classes for ten years at Purdue, including freshman composition (regular and advanced), sports and literature, science fiction and fantasy literature, film, and womens studies. Last year and this year, I have been working as a visiting assistant professor of English at, respectively, Illinois College and Austin College , both of which are small liberal arts colleges. In 2000-2001, I have taught Writing, Topics in 20th-Century American Literature: Multicultural Literature of the Americas, Studies in American Literature of the 20th-Century: American Space and Identity, and Introduction to Literature. Last year I taught freshman composition, multicultural literature, and an upper level survey course in African-American literature.

Butler Bibliography Book Marks Author Info The central character, Eli, is the only survivor of a ship wreck (space ship, that is), and is carrying an alien disease/life form that redesigns the human body and is intent on taking over all human bodies. The "disease" is highly communicable and the alien life form drives it's host to thrive for physical contact. What makes this book interesting is how Elli strives to keep his humanity by trying to "contain" this disease and the measures he and his "family" must take to "feed" this alien life form. OK, I've told you enough! Go pick up your own copy! You'll not be disappointed by Ms. Butler's writing style and story. This book is number five in the "Patternist" series. I didn't miss not having read the others first, the story stands on its own. Amazon.com reader rating:

Butlers novels share with readers her extraordinary vision of what it means to be "other," based on intelligent biological speculation. Her Xenogenesis trilogy, now retitled Liliths Brood for reissue by Warner creates a stunningly vision of abduction and seduction by an alien species. This vision is presented in terms remarkably consistent with modern molecular biology, even predicting developments that have occurred since the novels were written. As the trilogys first book, Dawn, opens, the human race has nearly destroyed itself by nuclear war"humanicide," as Butler calls ita fate that seemed all too plausible in the eighties, when the book was written, and that remains a distinct possibility if the effects of humanity on our environment are not reversed. The few humans who survive the war are rescued and captured by the Oankali, a nomadic alien species that travels through the universe seeking partner species with whom to "trade" their own genes. The story is told from the viewpoint of Lilith Iyapo, a human woman whom the Oankali adopt into their family and try to enlist in recruiting other humans.
