Extractions: Writing a biography on such a colorful character is by no means an easy feat. Even though Calamity wrote her own autobiography, it does not clarify the story. Calamity Jane is considered second only to Buffalo Bill for exaggerating her life exploits. Considering that she wrote the autobiography to promote her western shows, her story may have been altered to for the benefit of the audience. It is also noted that an authority of the time period, Daniel Thrapp, described Calamity as an alcoholic, but a genial and rambunctious one. Somewhere between her autobiography and historical interpretations lies the truth. With all this stated, here is a brief summation of the life of Calamity Jane! Martha Jane Cannary was born in 1852 (the date of her birth is even in question ) in Princeton, Missouri. Calamity was the oldest child with two brothers and three sisters. In 1865, her family moved to Montana. Along this five month journey, Calamity hunted and worked among the men. By the time they reached Montana, Calamity was considered an equal with the men as far as her riding and shooting skills were concerned. Calamity Jane's mother passed away in 1866 and her father passed away in 1867, leaving her in charge of her siblings. She moved with the children to Wyoming where she took any job she could to support the family. In 1870, Calamity Jane joined General Cutter as a scout. It was at this time that she began wearing mens clothing and the uniform of a soldier. Her male attire became her trademark. Calamity got her name during the campaign of 1873. When Captain Egan was shot, Calamity raced to his aid, lifted him onto her horse and got him to safety. When he recovered, Captain Egan laughingly said, I name you Calamity Jane, the heroin of the plains.

Extractions: Cemetery restoration to be completed this year By Tim Velder, Northern Hills Bureau The city of Deadwood anticipates the completion of a three-year, $3.5 million restoration project at the historic Mount Moriah Cemetery this year. Project architect and consultant Pat Wyss of Wyss Associates in Rapid City updated the Deadwood Historic Preservation Commission at its Feb. 26 meeting. The restoration began in 1999. The city is contracting with MAC Construction Company of Rapid City to rebuild walls, refurbish monuments, restore ironwork and masonry work and repair streets. Landscaping and tree removal already have been completed. The flagpole was recently moved from its original spot on private ground to its present place in the cemetery. Wyss Associates is designing the landscape work, and MAC Construction is doing the restoration work. Wyss said the gravesite improvements should be completed in July. Workers will install curbs and pave the cemetery roads through mid- August. The cemetery roads will be closed during the paving process, which is expected to last about three weeks.
