Extractions: Read by Bill Bryson Like many of his generation, Bill Bryson backpacked across Europe in the early seventies in search of enlightenment, beer and women. Over twenty years later, the acclaimed author of "Notes from a Small Island" and "A Walk in the Woods" decided to retrace the journey he undertook in the halcyon days of his youth carrying with him a bag of maps, old clothes... and a stinging wit honed to razor sharpness by two decades of adult experience. E-mail story View Salon privately with SafeWeb "A Walk in the Woods" (BDD Audio) describes Bryson attempt to reacquaint himself with his native USA by walking the Appalachian Trail, after living in Great Britain for nearly two decades. The trail offers an astonishing landscape of forests and lakesand to comic writer Bill Bryson, it also provides endless opportunities to witness the silliness of his fellow human beings.

Extractions: RE: Cap Beam Shear Wall System Subject Thread Date Author ... Thread Next I may not have fully explained my understanding of what a cap beam system is. The concept is to couple two walls together and have a plastic hinge form in the wall at the base, and to have another hinge form in the wall at the top. I know traditionally coupling beams are expected to form plastic hinges, but if the beam is so stiff that you get a large moment in the wall at the roof, then you have to accommodate the possibility of a plastic hinge forming there. The whole thing seems to be analogous to a bridge bent. I agree with you that the joint shear in particular needs special attention. -Original Message-
