    Extractions: In 1922 at the age of 18, Brown won a scholarship to Williams College and then went on to Harvard University. From 1936 to 1940, Brown served as editor of the Negro Affairs for the Work Projects Administrator's Federal Writers Project, which was one of the few important positions bestowed on an African American during the Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal. The desired effect of the New Deal was to get people back to work during the Depression. Brown's main works in the 1930s were studies of African-American literature and drama. His first book of poems, Southern Road, was most controversial because it made use of the black vernacular structures, which had been used, up to that time mostly in music.

In addition to having served on the Brown faculty for more than 25 years, she has been a visiting professor at a number of institutions both here and abroad. She is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and has been the recipient of grants and fellowships in both the sciences and the humanities. Professor Fausto-Sterling is the author of scientific publications in the field of developmental genetics and in developmental ecology. Her most recent laboratory research has focused on the evolution of regeneration and sexual reproduction in a group of flatworms known as Planaria . In addition she has written several papers which critically analyze the role of preconceptions about gender in the structuring theories of development. Her current work in this field includes a study of embryologist Edwin Grant Conklin, whose pioneering work on cell lineage was critical to the formation of contemporary developmental biology.

Brown lived on in his poetry, his jokes and his relationships with his students during a two-day symposium at the Library. "Sterling A. Brown: American Poet and Cultural Worker" was held Oct. 23 and 24 by the Library's Poetry and Literature Center in conjunction with the University of Virginia literary journal Callaloo , whose editors published a special issue focusing on Brown. Photo by Richard Jenkins Brown (1901-89) was a poet who wrote in black vernacular at a time when Harlem Renaissance writers looked down on such things as an embarrassing vestige of the rural South. But Brown thundered back: "Are we to acquiesce to the woman who wants 'Swing Low, Sweet Chariot' to be changed to 'Descend, Welcome Vehicle?' There are no hiding places," recalled Brown's biographer, John Edgar Tidwell, who is an associate professor of English at Miami University of Ohio. "His efforts to preserve and restore the vernacular of the black South anticipated African American literary studies," said Charles Rowell, editor of Callaloo. Brown laid the groundwork for those staples of African American literary studies

    Extractions: The Federation of Friends of the DC Public Library System with the Friends of Libraries USA (FOLUSA), during the American Library Association 1997 Mid-Winter Meeting in Washington, DC, have designated The Founders Library at Howard University a Literary Landmark in tribute to the life and writings of Sterling A. Brown. There are twenty-six FOLUSA Literary Landmark designations scattered throughout the United States. This marks the first time that the FOLUSA has designated a Literary Landmark in the nation's capital. The ceremony was held on 14 February in the Browsing Room of The Founders Library. It featured remarks by the presidents of the sponsoring organizations, dramatic reading of Brown's poetry, and musical selections. The participation of Howard University President, H. Patrick Swygert, along with other University officers-Dr. Antoine Garibaldi, the University Provost and Chief Academic Officer, and Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs, Mr. Harry G. Robinson III-gave even greater meaning to the event. It demonstrated that Howard's libraries and research centers are central to the University's teaching, research and service programs. This webpage, a collaborative effort of The Founders Library, the Moorland-Spingarn Research Center, and the English department at Howard University, highlights the life and work of professor Sterling Brown. The Manuscripts Division in the Moorland-Spingarn Research Center maintains the Sterling A. Brown Papers.

We would like to see him be able to guard anyone from a big guard to maybe even a point. If he develops that then all of a sudden his scoring becomes a huge bonus. It blew from the northeast, a static blur of white, and he lowered his cap and began to jog. In the dark windows beside him he searched for himself, but saw only the flakes merging with the grey of his beard. Snow-sheathed, silent, Atlantic Avenue lay deserted. He ran across the intersection, slipped and nearly fell, and leaned against a wall breathing deeply. Then he dropped his skis, stepped into them and snapped the bindings. He fitted his hands through the pole straps and pushed off, feeling awkward the first few strides and then confident, pushing with the poles as he skated with the skis, lifting one ski as he kicked back with the other, balancing as he slid on the snow on the sidewalk. It was a push up the ramp along planters of plastic holly and on the boardwalk, away from the buildings, the wind now hit him and the snow raced past. He stopped and leaned on his poles. Usually, even on the coldest days, gamblers edged along the storefronts. But today he saw no one. He closed and rubbed his eyes. When he opened them the boardwalk spread before him like a long frosted cake, and it was grey winter all around. He spat, and it lifted in the wind and vanished.
