Extractions: Tre älskares bekännelser Men oavsett vad syftet varit med dessa lönnliga journaler så är de helt ovärderliga för historikerna. Med hjälp av dem blir det nämligen möjligt att kasta en stråle av ljus över den del av förflutenhetens landskap där mörkret ligger som allra tätast. Kanske gör bristen på källmaterial det omöjligt att skriva Sexualitetens historia, möjligen måste vi nöja oss med att skriva sexualiteternas. Men låt oss ställa några av dessa minnesanteckningar invid varandra och se vad de har att säga oss om könsliv, moral och omoral genom tiderna. För att något underlätta en dylik jämförelse har jag valt tre dagböcker som alla är skrivna av män hemhöriga på de brittiska öarna, en från 1600-talet, en från 1700-talet och en från 1800-talet. Den förste av våra hemliga journalskrivare är Samuel Pepys, född 1633, en duglig, energisk och lätt pompös karl som gjorde god karriär som ämbetsman i den engelska flottans tjänst. Psykoanalytiskt lagda skulle nog kalla honom för en anal karaktär: punktlig, gniden och strängt upptagen med att bringa ordning och reda i allt var han urtypen för en modern byråkrat. Under åren 1660-69 förde han en utförlig dagbok. Den var aldrig avsedd att läsas av någon annan än honom själv och skrevs på en mycket svårtydd stenografi - hans högst personliga upplaga av det så kallade Sheltonsystemet. (Pepys hör alltså inte till dem som sålt sitt psyke och sina lortiga kalsonger för att få lite uppmärksamhet.) När texten oblygt dechiffrerades i början av 1800-talet av en pastor John Smith var det givetvis ett nidingsdåd, men ett gott sådant som gav världen ett unikt historiskt dokument.

Best known for his feeling descriptions of country life and for satires against the political and religious hypocrisy of the day, Burns wrote much of his poetry in his broad Scots dialect . The eldest child of William and Agnes Burnes (the elder Burnes spelled his name with an "e"), Burns was born in Ayrshire and lived a life of hard labor and poverty as he struggled with his father to make a series of poor farms productive. By 1786, with his father dead, and more failed farms to the family credit, Burns nearly emigrated to Jamaica. His first volume of poetry, however, was published that year to great acclaim, and Burns became the darling of Edinburgh. Further editions of poetry developed Burns' international reputation. Late in his life, supporting himself as an exciseman, Burns helped to collect and also wrote a wide-range of traditional Scottish songs. Oktober 1740 in Edinburgh geboren; er studierte an den Universitäten Glasgow Edinburgh und Utrecht . Von 1764 bis 1766 reiste er durch Europa, wo er Bekanntschaft mit Jean-Jacques Rousseau und Voltaire machte, und ließ sich dann bis 1783 als Anwalt in Edinburgh nieder. 1763 hatte Boswell den Schriftsteller Samuel Johnson kennen gelernt, mit dem er bis zu dessen Tod 1784 eng befreundet war. Die Eindrücke einer gemeinsamen Reise durch Schottland und auf die Hebriden im Jahr 1773 verarbeitete Boswell in seinen Tagebüchern, die er unter dem Titel "Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides, with Samuel Johnson" "Tagebuch einer Reise nach den Hebridischen Inseln mit Dr. Samuel Johnson" ) veröffentlichte. 1786 zog Boswell nach London , wo er zum Literary Club von Sir Joshua Reynolds gehörte.
