Extractions: University of California, Berkeley December 24, 2002 A commentary on Heinrich Bölls Gruppenbild mit Dame Heinrich Boll (1917-1985) Gruppenbild mit Dame Background Boll saw the purpose of literature as the dissemination of humanitarian ideals (das Humane). The heroine of Gruppenbild embodies his understanding of humanity and illuminates Bolls view of the ideal human existence. The Bollian idea of humanity includes the writers code of ethics, his/her responsibility for erotic, sexual, religious, social problems, regret, understanding, empathy, love for the socially rejected. This idea is connected to his Christian (Catholic) beliefs; it is also dependent on historical and political circumstances: the tragic outcomes of fascism and WWII forced upon German literature the themes of guilt and responsibility and compelled German writers to clarify their moral and political positions.
