    Extractions: I REMEMBER HANNES In 1950, ESFA and the Hydra Club buried the hatchet momentarily and over the July Fourth weekend, held a regional con at the Henry Hudson Hotel in New York City The Cincinnati Fantasy Group was represented by Don Ford, his wife, Margaret, Roy and Deedee Lavender and Stan Skirvin. It was a long hot drive, with Don and I sharing the driving. It was worth it, for it gave Deedee and I to visit with Hannes Bok. Hannes was at the Cinvention the previous year, but I was on the concom and there was little time for visiting. There was a short break in Room 100 where I got to see some of Hannes' work, along with Doc Barrett. I was impressed with his mastery of moonlight. One piece in particular was a sketch of a tree leaning out from a bluff over a river. Done in black and white, like moonlight. Only after looking at it for a while did you begin to pick out details. Finally, you suddenly realized there was a nude leaning against the tree. Stan and I had a meal with Hannes at some little restaurant not far from the Metropole (where the Cinvention was held). Hannes doodled his little mouse signature on the porcelain topped table. I remember the regret as I watched the waiter and his wet cloth erase a Bok original. But that was about all. We just didn't have time to visit.

That's because there really was a lot to talk about in 2001. The book follows the film from MGM's announcement that Kubrick would make "Journey Beyond the Stars" on 22 Feb 66, to the New York openings and reviews. Jerome Agel was really a book designer who made his name by designing Marshall McLuhan's THE MEDIUM IS THE MESSAGE and WAR AND PEACE IN THE GLOBAL VILLAGE. Some of his designs really needed a physically larger book. It covers Kubrick's viewpoint. Arthur C. Clarke had his own book (see Clarke, 1972 entry). Allegro, John, SACRED MUSHROOM AND THE CROSS, 1, 1970, Doubleday, HB. If conservative churchmen thought THE PASSOVER PLOT was bad news, this one was enough to cause heart failure. At least Schonfield never questioned the existence of Jesus. Allegro argued that "Christ" was a complex metaphor for the Amenita Muscaria, a mushroom used by a secret Semitic cult in rituals. Worse still, Allegro was a respected biblical scholar, one of the translators of the Dead Sea Scrolls. Allegro did a fine job proving the cult did exist, and that some of it's symbolism was attached to Christianity. I am convinced that Allegro was inspired by R. Gordon Wasson (see 1969 entry) and Robert Graves' earlier work on the cult use of mushrooms. Anyone know about this? Anthony, Piers (Piers A.D. Jacob), and Margroff, Robert E., E.S.P. WORM, THE, 1, 1970, Warner Paperback Library, PB. Qumax is an egotistical, neurotic teenager who has run away from home. The only problem is, he looks like a huge cabbage worm, has unlimited ESP powersand he's chosen the US as his home. One of several comic science fiction novels Anthony wrote with Margroff.

Anthony is one of the young "new wave" science fiction writers who struggled through the 60's to emerge as a major force in the 70's. This is his first major novel. MACROSCOPE draws much from theSwadian school of astrology as practiced by Marc Edmond Jones and DaneRudhyar. I suspect there's a lot of Jungian influence here, too. The emphasis is on the inner transformation of the space traveler, rather than on the journey itself. It's metaphysics as science fiction. If you go back a few decades you'll find C. S. Lewis, Olaf Stapleton, David Lindsay, and Charles Williams writing metaphysics in genre form. Anthony is at his best when he follows this stream, rather that the American pulp tradition (see GOD OF TAROT, 1979 entry). Asimov, Isaac, GUIDE TO THE BIBLE, 1, 1969, Doubleday, HB. 2 Volumes. Berlitz, Charles, MYSTERY OF ATLANTIS~THE, 1, 1969, Grosset and Dunlap, HB. This is the first of a long series of titles on "fringe" subjects by Berlitz. This is an enjoyable but lightweight survey on Atlantis. This book popularized Edgar Cayce's prediction that part of Atlantis would "rise" near Bimini in the late 60's. It was Berlitz's contact and later collaborator, Dr. Mason Valentine, who claimed to have spotted the mysterious "Bimini Wall". All this seems to support Cayce's prediction (see Ferro and Grumley, 1970 entry).

    Extractions: Hannes Bok was a cover artist, illustrator, author, and astrologer. He has been described as the 'master of macrebe'. His work graces the cover of many early pulp magazines, but was seen by some as the 'bad boy' of science fiction. He lost hundreds of commisions because he would not let editors tell him what to do. Still, he painted almost 150 covers for pulp magazines, as well as hundreds of black and white illustrations, which it seems many prefer to his color work. His overall work is described as "highly stylized, and his human figures are angular and almost Byzantine" (Nicholls 80). His first artwork was the cover of Weird Tales (Dec. 1939). As a writer he did "The Alien Vibration","Web of Moons", "Beauty", and a novellette "Dusk on the Moon". He wrote "Starstone World" in the Science Fiction Quarterly (Summer 1942) . He was a great admirer of A. Merritt, and completed and illustrated two of Merritt's books after his death in 1943. These were The Black Wheel (1947), and

Jag var aldrig en riktig grönavågare (skratt). Men jag är fylld av respekt för dem som stannar. Landsbygden är ett sista reservat för original och vi stadsbor förhåller oss nog till det med en skräckblandad förtjusning. Jag trivs bäst i stan och det skulle aldrig funka för mig att bo på landet, det blir för bökigt, men en del av mitt hjärta kommer alltid finnas kvar på landet och jag vill att min aska ska bli strödd på Linderödsåsens sydostsluttning.

    Extractions: Ribbon-tied textured card covers printed in gold. Ribbon replaced (original ribbon present but disintegrating), some scattered light staining to the front wrap and a few light, contemporary pencil marks, else about fine. An elaborate program and yearbook for the presentation of the pennant to the New York team. The book includes the program of the ceremony arranged by Digby Bell and DeWolfe Hopper, league standings, team, personal and league statistics, a foldout chart showing the team standings for each day of the season, league history and several pages of photographs of the team's players including Manager James Mutrie, Captain Wm. Ewing, Timothy J. Keefe, Roger Connor, John Montgomery Ward, George Gore, James O'Rourke, Michael Welsh, Henry O'Day and several others. Exceptionally rare. On the program was a recitation by DeWolfe Hopper, almost certainly "Casey at the Bat," which Hopper made famous. Inscribed by Cheever to His Daughter CHEEVER, John.
