Reviewed by Arthur Taussig Men in Black has set box office records. Literally millions of people saw it in its first weekend of release. What is the attraction? The droll comedy? The special effects? The stars? The 25th anniversary of the incident at Rosswell, New Mexico? Or is it something more? As with most blockbuster films, it is "more." And in the case of Men in Black, it is definitely something more, something very surprising, even shocking. In a word, the 1997 Hollywood film Men in Black is the unmodified, though modernized, retelling of an ancient Jewish legend called the "36 Righteous Men!" Before the story itself, let's look at the source of the legend - the Midrash. Midrash is a Jewish term from the Hebrew verb darash that means, "to search" and, therefore, to make exposition. It is the title of a body of Jewish literature used in the centuries just before and after Jesus, that was designed to reveal an interpretation of the Scriptures that was not apparent on the surface. It is a running commentary by various scholars on Biblical texts. It refers to both a method of interpretation and a body of literature. There is not one book called the Midrash, but rather many anthologies of Midrashim compiled between the 2nd and 14th centuries CE. The collections of Midrashim fall into two broad categories, Midrash Halacha (Jewish law) and Midrash Aggada (legends). In Midrash Halacha, the main focus is on the legal sections of Torah. The main anthologies in this category are Mechilta (Collection) on Exodus; Sifra (Book) on Leviticus; and Sifrei (Books) on Numbers and Deuteronomy. These became the basis of later legal literature, the Mishnah and both Talmuds. Midrash Aggada is what most people think of when using the term Midrash. This kind of Midrash deals with mostly non-legal issues, including "filling in the blanks" in the narrative, philosophy, ethics . . . and legends. And from the Midrash Agadda comes the story of the 36 Hidden Saints.

He worked as a law clerk and was a businessman, journalist, editor, lecturer, New York Public Library curator, and teacher of Spanish. In 1911 Schomburg co-founded the Negro Society for Historical Research. He was also a lecturer for the United Negro Improvement Association. Schomburg was a member of the New York Puerto Rico Revolutionary Party and served as secretary of the Cuban Revolutionary Party. Schomburg, who died in 1938, collected thousands of works on black culture over his life time. Arthurian Legend - The Black Horses - Roman Legacy S G Wildman , biologist and amateur historian / archaeologist, put forward a theory in "The Black Horsemen" in 1971 that the "Black Horse" pub name was a symbol of the 5th Century British cavalry. The White Horse was the symbol of the invading Saxons. This sort of symbolism is also indicated by references to the British Red Dragon and Saxon White Dragon of the text of Nennius. Wildman's theory began to develop when he was researching the origins of inns called "The Black Horse". He discovered that the name, curiously, did not necessarily occur in areas where there were many black horses. For instance there are no Black Horse pubs in Cumbria, the Fell Pony's stronghold, though there is one Black Horse Hill - on a steep pass outside Sedbergh there was an inn of that name, recorded in 1862 and 1829. He worked back critically through the centuries from the present day, trying to fit historical events to the theme, and eventually came to the conclusion that where there were groups of Black Horse pub names, there had been strong defence of Celtic / British land against the Saxons. These names, he suggested, commemorated areas where British cavalry action had been specially important.

The Black Horses - Roman Legacy The "Northern theory" of Arthur's upbringing has been described in recent years as a product of medieval Welsh poets working in the Lake District and adapting their subject matter to fit the country in which they lived. Some modern scholarship has swung hard the other way and, sadly, discounts Arthur, Vortigern and the Saxons Hengist and Horsa, as mythic gods or heroes "historicised" by bardic song and tale-telling. However, the original of Arthur as a god is not identified. Vortigern, Hengist and Horsa are all probably "honorifics" or titles, that is, they may not be real names. Vortigern means overlord or High King, Horsa probably does mean Horse and Hengist is a name meaning Stallion. Arthur is not mentioned by the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, but Vortigern, Hengist and Horsa are, so there is a good chance they really existed. Sharon Turner in 1799 suggested almost in passing that Arthur could have been the same person as another leader of the fifth century, Rigotimos. Sidonius Apollinaris, a well educated Frenchman who became a bishop, wrote a letter to Rigotimos around 469 AD. Geoffrey Ashe (1985) maintains that of the four leaders, Arthur is the one known to us by his own, Celtic name; and that Rigotimos or Riothamus was his official title as "High King". (

A few plants, such as fennel, are so constituted that we bless them as saviors, damn them as pests, and variously eat 'em or beat 'em. Last month a miserable little runt known as Hop Clover (Trifolium dubium) was our highlighted weed. Now we introduce a close cousin, who is not so bad, so common, so small and weak. Black Medick (Medicago lupulina) bears the same relation in size to Hop Clover that rats do to mice: the heavyweight version. Both weeds, as usual, are of Old World origin. Both are low-growing, are often flattish, with tiny yellow flowers. Unlike Hop Clover, Black Medick is not, however, a wimpy little summer annual. It can overwinter. It can make tough stems as long as five feet. Its leaves are larger, hairier, and far more strongly flavored. Its seeds are black, not pale red-brown. Less showy, less common, less obnoxious, and comparatively unimportant, it still can be nearly as interesting. Although fascinatingly alike in its arrowhead leaf shape, and in being a weedy vining plant from the Old World, it is unrelated to the Morning Glory family. Instead it is in the Knotweed clan, which includes Creeping Knotweed, Silver Lace Vine, Bistort, Lady's Thumb, Docks, Sorrels, and Buckwheat. Some alternate names for Black Bindweed are: Climbing or Ivy Knotweed, Cornbind, Bearbind, Devil's Tether, and Wild Buckwheat. No better way to make it familiar than to compare it to common wild Morning Glory. The Morning Glory is a perennial with plump, far-reaching white roots; Black Bindweed is a summer annual with tough, slender yellow or brownish roots. Morning Glory chokes tightly and its stem exude a sticky white juice when wounded. Black Bindweed climbs loosely in a relaxed, almost languid manner, and has no milky juice. Morning Glory has showy, large white bell flowers glorious in the morning, but setting few seeds; Black Bindweed bears numerous tiny flowers, dingy and always unnoticed, making copious seeds. Born in Puerto Rico in 1874, Arthur Alfonso Schomburg came to New York militantly active in Caribbean revolutionary struggles. He searched out the hidden records of the black experience and built a collection of books, manuscripts, and art that had few rivals. Today it forms the core of the New York Public Library's Schomburg Center for research in Black Culture, one of the leading collections in the field. At the center of the Harlem Renaissance, Schomburg was a generous friend of many of the writers, artists, performers, collectors, scholars, and political figures who made Harlem the capital of Black America. A contributor to the major black journals of the period, he went on to head the Negro Collection at Fisk University and became curator of his own collection in the New York Public Library until his death in 1938. "In her informed and highly readable portrait of Arthur Schomburg, Elinor Sinnette has captured the spirit and tenacity of the man totally dedicated to putting the work of Black writers and thinkers on the literary map of the world."

Extractions: A Literary Historian Arthur A. Schomburg was born January 24, 1874 in San Puerto Rico to a German father and a West Indian mother. He spent most of his childhood in Puerto Rico. He attended St. Thomas College in the Virgin Islands and immigrated to the United States in 1891 where he began to work at a New York City Law office. While in New York, he began to collect literary works and visual art by and about people of the African decent. In 1911, Arthur and John E. Bruce founded the Negro Society for Historical Research as a base from which to publish black articles. In 1922, Schomburg was elected President of the American Negro Academy. He not only collected works by others but produces essays himself which later on went to be published. His collection of books, manuscripts and artifacts were invaluable resources and inspiration to both historian and Harlem Renaissance artists. Through his collections of art and literature by people of the African decent, Arthur sought to disprove the pseudo-scientific racism of the day.
