Extractions: The day after he was consecrated a bishop, he stood next to Pope John Paul II and President Ronald Reagan at the Fairbanks International Airport. He was a pilot for over 35 years. His coat of arms carries an airplane propeller and the motto: "TO LOVE AND TO SERVE." As Bishop of Fairbanks, on wing and on wheel, he traveled far and wide throughout his 409,849 square mile missionary diocese, conferring the Sacrament of Holy Orders on men, both Native and white, and the Sacrament of confirmation on countless young and old, blessing new churches, meeting and greeting, loving and serving the widely scattered flocks entrusted to his pastoral care. And it was while loving and serving one of his remote flocks in the bush Alaska that the Lord he loved and served above all called him out of this life. Michael Kaniecki was born in Detroit, Michigan on April 13, 1935. Already as a young boy he felt called to the priesthood. He was however, at the time drawn also to an outdoor, wilderness lifestyle, having spent a good part of his youth in northern Michigan and in northern Canada hunting, fishing and trapping. (In more recent years he hunted only with a camera.) As he neared the end of his high school years, he found himself facing a kind of dilemma: to lead the life of a priest? or a more outdoor type of life?. Then he was granted a scholarship to the Naval Academy in Annapolis. However, he failed to pass the physical, needed to have surgery, had to wait a year. During that year he learned about Alaska and its challenges, and saw that therein lay the answer to his dilemma. In Alaska he could serve as a priest and at the same time live in an environment so very much in keeping with his natural inclinations.

Extractions: Bishop Warfel was replaced as Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Fairbanks by Bishop-elect Donald Kettler on August 22, 2002. Bishop Warfel replaced Reverend Richard D. Case, S.J., who has held the position of Diocesan Administrator since the death of Bishop Michael J. Kaniecki, S.J. in August 2000. The appointment is being made in order to lighten the weight of responsibility that has been placed upon Fr. Case as well as allow him to resume some of his former pastoral duties. Bishop Warfel was born on September 16, 1948 in Elkhart, Indiana. He attended Indiana University, obtained a B.A. in Philosophy from St. Gregory's College Seminary in Cincinnati, Ohio, his Masters of Divinity from Mt. St. Mary's of the West, also in Cincinnati and his Masters in Theology from St. Michael's College, Burlington, Vermont. He was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Anchorage on April 26, 1980 and served in a number of parishes in Southcentral, Alaska. On December 17, 1996, he was ordained and installed as the fourth Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Juneau. Currently, he serves as chairman of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Committee on Evangelization. He also is a member of the Administrative Committee for the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

I know it's conventional to moan about the way in which Christmas has been hijacked by glittering commercialism. We criticise the great spending spree and say pious things about rediscovering the spirit of Christmas. The trouble is that too often that means sentimentalising it - with all our 'sweet lullabies' of the babe in the manger and stylised pictures of the holy family. The commercialisation of Christmas, in fact, comes nearer to the truth than that. For Christmas is about the material - that is its message and its essence. It is about flesh and blood, touchable reality, the mixture of joy and pain, poverty and plenty, which make life what it is. Few things symbolise the material more than money. We worry about money at Christmas - shall we have enough to accumulate all the things we think we need? Yet money is a test of how seriously we have taken the sheer materialism of Christmas. Take a five pound note and change your image of it. You probably think of it as an unfortunate necessity. Hard to get. Quick to vanish. But instead think of the five pound note as a sacrament of the presence of God. Our faith is founded on the belief that all life is a gift - not a right. When we focus on our rights we only have left overs for God and for others. When we focus on life as a gift, our whole being is directed towards thanksgiving and the opportunities which God's gifts offer.

The news was made public in Rome on Wednesday, 24th January at 12 noon, Rome time. This news was released by the Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Francesco Canalini in the Apostolic Nunciature on 24th January 2001, embargoed until 10:00pm (AEDST). Bishop Michael Putney He entered Pius XII Provincial Seminary, Banyo, Brisbane in 1963, being ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Brisbane on 28 June 1969. From 1970-1971 he served as associate pastor at Burleigh Heads on the Gold Coast, before traveling to the Gregorian University in Rome where he completed a Licentiate in Theology (1971-1973). This was followed by 18 months of doctoral studies at the Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium (1973-1974), before returning to the Gregorian University to complete his Doctorate in Theology (1982-1985).

Hoban, a native of the Diocese and first pastor of Saint Leo's Parish in Ashley, had assumed the office of Coadjutor to Bishop O'Hara on March 22, 1896, the day of his Episcopal Ordination. On February 3, 1899, he became the Ordinary of the Diocese. The next twenty-seven years were years of achievement. In the interim, the Diocese had grown to include 341 priests, 202 parishes, nine teaching orders of sisters, five communities of sisters with specialized apostolates, 65 parochial schools, three colleges, and four custodial institutions. But important as were those material successes, his spiritual accomplishments were perhaps even greater. Ethnic problems, not of his own making, brought schism to Northeastern Pennsylvania. His charitable and judicious approach, however, stemmed the tide and prevented far worse effects from occurring. It had been a difficult task. His death on November 13, 1926, marked the end of an era. Main History Page
