Cambridge: University Press, 1910. pp. 589-90. BEAUMARCHAIS, PIERRE AUGUSTIN CARON DE (1732-1799), French dramatist, was born in Paris on January 24, 1732. His father, a watchmaker named Caron, brought him up to the same trade. He was an unusually precocious and lively boy, shrewd, sagacious, passionately fond of music and imbued with a strong desire for rising in the world. At the age of twenty-one he invented a new escapement for watches, which was pirated by a rival maker. Young Caron at once published his grievance in the Mercure , and had the matter referred to the Academy of Sciences, which decided in his favour. This affair brought him into notice at court; he was appointed, or at least called himself, watchmaker to the king, who ordered from him a watch similar to the one he had made for Mme de Pompadour. His handsome figure and cool assurance enabled him to make his way at court. Mme Franquet, the wife of an old court official, persuaded her husband to make over his office to young Caron, and, on her husband's death, a few months later, married the handsome watchmaker. Caron at the same time assumed the name Beaumarchais; and four years later, by purchasing the office of secretary to the king obtained a patent of nobility.

Il entre en littérature par la petite porte, fournit à Lenormant d'Étiolles, mari de la Pompadour, des Parades dans le genre poissard (1757 - 1763). Le théâtre l'intéresse cependant d'une manière plus sérieuse, et, suivant les idées développées par Diderot sur le drame bourgeois, il donne à la Comédie-Française Eugénie (1767), demi-échec suivi de la publication d'un ouvrage théorique, Essai sur le genre dramatique sérieux , et les Deux Amis (1770), échec total. Changeant de genre, Beaumarchais projette de donner aux Comédiens italiens qui le refusent, le Barbier de Séville , un opéra-comique. Après aménagements, et tandis que Beaumarchais se débat dans un procès contre le juge Goëzman, la Comédie-Française reçoit en 1773 la comédie du Barbier de Séville , finalement créée en 1775. Le succès n'est pas immédiat. La pièce est coupée et ramenée de 5 à 4 actes, dès la seconde représentation. Une longue série de représentations victorieuses s'ouvre alors. Tout en méditant une suite à l'histoire de son Figaro, Beaumarchais prend la tête des auteurs dramatiques trop longtemps abusés par les Comédiens-Français, qui profitent de leur monopole pour ne pas rétribuer les auteurs comme il conviendrait. D'un conflit mené tambour battant par Beaumarchais, exigeant des comptes exacts, et peu avare en déclarations tonitruantes, naît la Société des auteurs dramatiques (1777 - 1780). Dès 1781

He also organized a fleet of merchant ships to carry cannons, ammunition and other equipment and assist the Continental Congress. In exchange for the war supplies the agent of Congress promised to send back produce, chiefly tobacco, as compensation of the debt. 40 years later Beaumarchais's daughter still waited for the compensation, which was about 2 million francs. Congress replied: "Take one third or nothing."
