This is initially accompanied by a robust optimism about the reliability of reason and its ability to lead us to true wisdom on its own [Descartes, Cleanthes, Mill]; but it can easily be turned to skepticism and even pragmatic indifference to the search for wisdom when this optimism proves unwarranted [Philo in his more cheerful and superficial moments]. Post-Enlightenment (or Post-Modern): It is a delusion to think of the search for wisdom as anything but a movement of will or instinct, with reason serving only to rationalize what one already accepts without reasonable grounds. Characterized by both (i) a seriousness with regard to ultimate metaphysical and moral questions and (ii) a suspicion regarding any claim to intellectual authority, including the so-called [sneer stage left] authority of reason [Nietzsche, Philo in his darker and more profound moments].

Extractions: Reference Augustine of Hippo Augustine of Hippo, perhaps the greatest theologian in the history of Western Christianity, was born in Thagaste in North Africa, in A.D. 354. The son of a pagan father and Christian mother, he was brought up as a nominal Christian, and at the age of sixteen went to Carthage to finish his education in law. In 375, on reading Cicero's Hortensius , he becamse intensely interested in philosophy. He became a follower of the Manichean sect, some of whose tenets he continued to hold after he founded his own school of rhetoric at Rome, in 383. Augustine accepted a professorship in Milan, and while there came under the influence of Platonic philosophy in the form of Neo-Platonism. He underwent an intense inner stuggle with his personal faith and morality, the account of which forms part of his Confessions . Under the influence of his mother, Monnica, and the preaching of Ambrose, Bishop of Milan, Augustine was led to true faith in Christ and was baptized in 387. He returned to North Africa in 391, and was unexpectedly chosen by the people of Hippo to become a priest. Four years later, he was chosen to be Bishop of Hippo. Augustine wrote a great many treatises, letters and sermons. They have provided a rich source of new and fresh insights into Christian faith. Stirred by Alaric the Visigoth's sack of Rome in 410, Augustine wrote what is possibly his greatest work

Diocesan architect Munro Cautley observed the letter of Suffolk Decorated and Perpendicular rather than the spirit. Consequently, the church looks rather dumpy in its concrete rendering. Grander than his St Andrew , it has none of the spirit of its age that you find at contemporary near neighbour All Hallows Mock-Perpendicular rises above mock-Tudor on the Bucklesham Road. Still, this is a landmark building, and it is light and airy inside. It contains the bell from the now-vanished church of St Peter, Linstead Magna , which was derelicted the year before St Augustine was built. Supposedly, the font is from there, too. But it seems possible that the Linstead Magna font was moved to St Margaret, Linstead Parva , and St Augustine inherited the old font from Linstead Parva. A bit like one of those party games. Cautley takes himself rather seriously in south-east Ipswich.

Tagaste, near ancient Hippo-Regius, was at that time a small free city of proconsular Numidia. Hippo-Regius and the surrounding area were Tyrian Phoenician colonies on the west coast of the bay. It was gaven the name Hipponensis Sinus; the surname Regius was bestowed on it as one of the places where the Numidian kings resided. Later it became a Roman colonia and prospered until A.D. 430, when it was taken by the Vandals. Hippo had recently been converted from Donatism. Although eminently respectable, his family was not rich, and his father, Patricius, one of the curiales of the city, was still a pagan. However, the admirable virtues that made Monica (Saint Monica) the ideal of Christian mothers at length brought her husband the grace of baptism and of a holy death, about the year 371. Augustine received a Christian education. His mother had him signed with the cross and enrolled among the catechumens. Once, when very ill, he asked for baptism, but, all danger being soon passed, he deferred receiving the sacrament, thus yielding to a deplorable custom of the times. His association with "men of prayer" left three great ideas deeply engraven upon his soul: a Divine Providence, the future life with terrible sanctions, and, above all, Christ the Saviour. "From my tenderest infancy, I had in a manner sucked with my mother's milk that name of my Saviour, Thy Son; I kept it in the recesses of my heart; and all that presented itself to me without that Divine Name, though it might be elegant, well written, and even replete with truth, did not altogether carry me away" (Confessions, I, iv).

In his time, the region was a province of the Roman Empire. Augustine received classical education and training in rhetoric at Carthage. He then held teaching positions there as well as in Milan prior to his conversion and baptism in 387. After returning to Africa, he was ordained and subsequently appointed Bishop of Hippo Regius. He actively tended his episcopate there until his death over 30 years later. Since then, St. Augustine's copious writings have continued to influence Christian dogma and theology. Augustine was of Berber descent and almost certainly Black. His mother, Monica, was a Christian whose virtues he praised. But at Carthage he was drawn into sexual excesses: later, while studying rhetoric and philosophy, he came under the influence of Manichaism followed by Neoplatonism. In the spring of 387, after many sessions with Ambrose, Bishop of Milan, and the study of the Bible, Augustine was baptized. The events of Augustine's life are recorded in his Confessions which is a spiritual classic and the first real work of Christian autobiography. Augustine's Christinaity remained strongly ascetic and his writings display a remarkably African ethos. In 396 he was consecrated Bishop of Hippo and remained a pastor until his death. For more than thirty years Augustine was the leading the theologian in African Christianity. In 410 the Goths sacked Rome and the pagans blamed the Christians whose God they said caused the disaster. Augustine put the capstone on his theological activity by defending the Christians against this charge in his great work The City of God Augustine's theology helped bring about the Protestant Reformation and deeply influenced early Protestant theologians such as Martin Luther and John Calvin who were strongly Augustinian in their outlook.

Note : There is a new edition, ISBN 0571204953, which differs only by having a 65-page epilogue about recent discoveries. The ISBN at the top is for the edition I read. This is so far as I can judge a very successful biography of Augustine. I am not competent to evaluate its accuracy and completeness I haven't even read the Confessions , and more or less everything I know about Augustine's life comes from this very book but it seems comprehensive, and shows every sign of having been carefully researched. It also includes a decent bibliography, a good index, and (in 5 pieces placed at appropriate points) a chronological summary, year by year, of Augustine's life and work. What I can evaluate is its success in keeping the reader interested (very good), in giving an idea not only of what happened to its subject but of what sort of person he was (excellent), and in showing him in the wider context of his world (very good). When as here the subject also happens to be a genius and a great writer, a good biography should also communicate this and encourage the reader to move on to the subject's own writings. Here too Brown succeeds admirably. (His book contains many small quotations from Augustine, which among other things communicate something of the excellence of his writing. It would have been pleasant to have a few longer samples, and to know whether the translations are Brown's own or from standard English editions. I'm guessing the former, on the grounds that he'd have had to credit the translators otherwise.)

Mitchell 27 August 2000 Email the Preacher Tomorrow the Church remembers Saint Augustine of Hippo. There are two great saints of the church called Augustine. Both were Bishops, and both had a huge influence over the church of their day. Indeed, without them the history of the Christian faith, and perhaps the entire western world, would be very different. The saint Augustine who springs to mind most easily for us as Anglicans is Augustine of Canterbury, who was sent by the Bishop of Rome in the middle of the sixth century to convert the Church of England to Roman Catholicism Ð a task in which he succeeded so well that it remained in the Roman Catholic church for nearly a thousand years, before breaking away again during the reign of King Henry the eighth. Although he is important in our history as Anglicans, it is not that saint Augustine we remember today. The other Saint Augustine, Augustine of Hippo, lived about 200 years before Saint Augustine of Canterbury. He was born, raised and educated in the Roman province of Africa, in the parts of the world we know today as Algeria and Tunisia. Augustine's early adulthood was spent in Rome and Milan, where he had a distinguished career as a politician and teacher of philosophy. Like many ambitious people in the Roman empire of his day, Augustine was nominally a Christian, but also flirted with several other religious cults and philosophies. As well, he seems to have devoted quite a bit of his time and energy into chasing after women and attending drinking parties.
