His parents, though they installed in him many of the values of their traditional Igbo culture, were devout evangelical Protestants and christened him Albert after Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria. In 1944 Achebe attended Government College in Umuahia. Like other major Nigerian writers including Wole Soyinka, Elechi Amadi, John Okigbo, John Pepper Clark, and Cole Omotso, he was also educated at the University College of Ibadan, where he studied English, history and theology. At the university Achebe rejected his British name and took his indigenous name Chinua. In 1953 he graduated with a BA. Before joining the Nigerian Broadcasting Company in Lagos in 1954 he travelled in Africa and America, and worked for a short time as a teacher. In the 1960s he was the director of External Services in charge of the Voice of Nigeria.

But as a young boy, he had ample opportunity to observe a traditional village life that "hadn't been completely disorganized" by British rule. His 'secondary' and university educations were in Nigeria, as well. He graduated from University College, Ibadan, in 1953. Then, he worked for over ten years for the Nigerian Broadcasting Company. He left it in 1966 partly as a result of the political conflicts which would lead to civil war in 1967 and eventually for a career in writing and teaching . By then, he had published three novels: Things Fall Apart No Longer at Ease (1960) a narrative about the grandson, a modern Nigerian, of the main character in Things ; and Arrow of God (1964rev. 1974). During the Biafran warthe civil war in Nigeria from 1967-1970, Achebe sided with the east (the predominantly Ibo, Biafrathe losing side). He joined the Biafran Ministry of Information and represented Biafra as a diplomat. Since then, he has taught variously at the universities of Nigeria, Massachusetts, and Connecticut. In 1990, he was severely injured in an auto accident, left paralyzed from the waist down. Achebe's latest novel, Anthills of the Savannah , was published in 1987, more than twenty years after A Man of the People (1966). Altogether, Achebe has written five novels. He has also written essays, poetry, and children's stories. Achebe played a significant role in the development of the Heinemann African Writers Series, a series which has given many Africans a voice in the western world and which, outside of Africa, publishes more African (and Caribbean) writers than any other publishing house.

He enrolled in the first class of the University College at Ibadan in 1948. He initially intended to study medicine, but switched to literature. His first novel, Things Fall Apart (1958) has received wide acclaim. It deals with the colonial impact on Igbo culture. Igbo society, as well as the book's main character, Okonkwo, are unable to adapt to the arrival of the British, who impose a cash economy and Christianity on them. Eventually, this vibrant, functioning society collapses and disintegrates under these new pressures, as does Okonkwo. A later novel, A Man Of the People (1966) describes an unnamed post-colonial African country. It deals with the problems of political representation in a corrupt nation. It also deals with the problems of finding a collective will in an ethnically diverse, economically stratified nation. The main part of the story centers around the political battles between the main character, Odili, and his former teacher, Chief Nanga, the corrupt and charismatic "man of the people". Achebe's unsentimental, often ironic books vividly convey the traditions and speech of the Ibo people. Born in Ogidi, Nigeria, Achebe was educated at the University College of Ibadan (now the University of Ibadan). He subsequently taught at various universities in Nigeria and the United States. Achebe wrote his first novel, Things Fall Apart (1958), partly in response to what he saw as inaccurate characterizations of Africa and Africans by British authors. The book describes the effects on Ibo society of the arrival of European colonizers and missionaries in the late 1800s. Achebe's subsequent novels No Longer at Ease (1960), Arrow of God (1964), A Man of the People (1966), and Anthills of the Savannah (1987) are set in Africa and describe the struggles of the African people to free themselves from European political influences. During Nigeria's tumultuous political period of the late 1960s and early 1970s, Achebe became politically active. Most of his literary works of this time address Nigeria's internal conflict (see Nigeria, Federal Republic of: Civil War). These books include the volumes of poetry Beware, Soul Brother (1971) and Christmas in Biafra (1973), the short-story collection Girls at War (1972), and the children's book How the Leopard Got His Claws (1972).

Chinua Achebe was born in Nigeria in 1930 and raised in the village of Ogidi. He was exposed to the missionary work of the Anglicans at an early age, as Ogidi was one of the first missionary centers established in Eastern Nigeria. His early career in radio broadcasting ended abruptly in 1966 with the start of the Biafran War. He began lecturing abroad and taught as a Professor of English at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst for 4 years. From 1987-1988 Achebe taught at the University of Connecticut, Storrs. He is the author of numerous adult and juvenile books as well as books of poetry and short stories. He currently lives in Nigeria. Things Fall Apart was Achebe's first novel. Published in 1958, it is the story of Okonkwo, a respected Ibo clansman. Set at the turn of the century, Okonkwo struggles with what it means to be a man in his Ibo culture. As British colonialism and Christianity encroach on his village, Okonkwo is unable to adjust to the ways of the foreigners and finds himself pitted against some of his own friends and villagers. Over eight million copies of Things Fall Apart have been published worldwide. It has been translated into fifty languages and was adapted for the stage in Lagos, Nigeria, and for television in 1985 by the Nigerian Television Authority.
