5-0 out of 5 stars Great For 9 to 12 year olds.
This beautifully illustrated book is intended to show the future star how the game is played at the top levels. The book includes quite a bit of commentary on the game, including tips on cloths, rackets, tactics, and how practice reallly does make your game improve. It is intended to not take the place of a personal coach, but to be of help to the starting player.

The exercises and pointers given by the Williams sisters will get you started if you don't have a coach, and will provide questions to ask him, and support for his answers if you do. The book is aimed at the 8 or 9 year old up to perhaps the 12 or 13 year old. It's written at a level that they will understand, and appreciate.

5-0 out of 5 stars My daughter LOVES this book
After our family spent many hours watching Wimbledon earlier this year, my 8-year-old daughter started showing interest in the sport. Now that she's got this beautiful book by Venus and Serena Williams, she is HOOKED.Every day she begs me to take her to our local courts so that she can practice her swings. She's got a long way to go, but at least she's spending her last few days of summer 1. reading and 2. being active.Recommended!

Product Description
One of the biggest stars in tennis, Serena Williams has captured every major title. Her 2009 Australia Open championship earned her the #1 world ranking for the third time in her illustrious career - and marked only the latest exclamation point on a life well and purposefully lived. As a young girl, Serena began training with an adult-sized racquet that was almost as big as her.Rather than dropping the racquet, Serena saw it as a challenge to overcome-and she has confronted every obstacle on her path to success with the same unflagging spirit. From growing up in the tough, hardscrabble neighborhood of Compton, California, to being trained by her father on public tennis courts littered with broken glass and drug paraphernalia, to becoming the top women's player in the world, Serena has proven to be an inspiration to her legions of fans both young and old.Her accomplishments have not been without struggle: being derailed by injury, devastated by the tragic shooting of her older sister, and criticized for her unorthodox approach to tennis.Yet somehow, Serena always manages to prevail. Both on the court and off, she's applied the strength and determination that helped her to become a champion to successful pursuits in philanthropy, fashion, television and film.In this compelling and poignant memoir, Serena takes an empowering look at her extraordinary life and what is still to come. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars An Honest Account of Life
Serena Williams bares it all: the good, the bad, and the ugly. Williams gives an up close and personal look at her rise to the #1 spot in women's tennis. She gives an honest account of her family dynamics. Not only the tennis aspect, but the personal aspects as well. Serena also talks about how tennis was her life and also about the time when she had no desire to play anymore. She gives journal entries throughout the book that also add a personal touch.

On the Line is a well written book. The book flows very well without having lagging moments. There is quite a bit of tennis jargon but it is still easy to follow even if you are not up on your tennis lingo. On the Line is a very nicely written book.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent choice for teens
I selected this book as part of my classroom library, and I have yet to get a chance to read it because it has been so popular with my students. Both the boys and girls have devoured it, and they discuss parts of her story, so I know they didn't just skim over it.So, if you are shopping for a young teen, my students say this should be high on your list!

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, just brilliant!!
I haven't even finished the book yet, but it is obviously a bestseller 'in my book'.I have both Venus & Serena's more recent autobiographies, but this book is by far the best!!! If your looking for a straight to the point, why are they successful, how were they with siblings, and parented, this is the book for you!Very direct, yet entertaining, an enjoyable read for a parent.I highly recommend it & the price is great(a penny)!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!!!!
This book is the best. It felt so down-to-earth. You feel like you know he williams sisters. I truly disagree with the person who talked about this book being about Jehovah's Witness. They don't encourage reades in any way to become a Jehovahs Witness. This is such a good book, I don't see how anyone could bad-mouth it. I had the good fortune to meet Venus, and I'm not lying i swear, and she is so nice and friendly. She gives off such a good vibe. THIS IS A GREAT BOOK!!!!!!!!!!! BUY IT PLEASE!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars No Shunning Allowed
Hilary Beard is a Philadelphia journalist who you can trust implicitly, she has a great even voice. Her previous book was the life story of enterpreneur Lisa Price, the woman who came back from financial ruin to found CAROL'S DAUGHTER the great herbal essence success story.Lisa got to meet many celebrities, in fact she knew them before they got big, and her cosmetic prescriptions, learned from her mother and Trinidadian family, helped Erykah Badu and Jada Pinkett among others,

Venus and Serena, who have collaborated with Hilary Beard on her new book, were famous when they were still girls, so their trajectory is somewhat different than that of Lisa Price, who struggled for artistic and commercial validation for many years and told the story in the fabulous SUCCESS NEVER SMELLED SO SWEET.Hilary Beard, who lost her father several years back, was drawn to the Williams sisters partly because of the strong guidance each received from their dad, a bittersweet association for Beard that accounts for some of the strongest writing in this book, SERVING FROM THE HIP.An avid tennis player, Beard knows what she's talking about, and she can help the Williams sisters structure a book and add depth to their insights about their own game.

Whether or not you're a Jehovah's Witness, this book has something for everyone, so don't shun the Williams girls just because their faith is a little bit different than yours! That's what America is all about--or it used to be!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for teens and fans of Venus and Serena!
After seeing Venus and Serena on the Oprah show, I decided to get this book and I'm glad I did.The book talks about many of their on-court experiences so if you're a fan of Venus and Serena and have followed their careers since the mid 90's, you'll find out fascinating tidbits about their reactions to incidents on the WTA Tour.I also bought a copy for a friend's 11 yr. old daughter so as you can see this book is a great conversation-starter for parents and their daughters.All-around, well done. ... Editorial Review

Product Description

The author shares the life stories of Venus and Serena Williams, who charged onto center court in professional tennis at the end of the 20th century with a force never before seen in the sport. No other women tennis players have matched their strength, their speed, or their overall athleticism, and none have achieved the status and celebrity they have gained on and off the court as they powered to the number one and two rankings in the Women's Tennis Association (WTA). Venus and Serena Williams represent in many ways a shift in attitudes concerning women in sports, particularly African American women. By playing tough tennis, they conveyed to the public that it was acceptable for women to be strong, to have muscles, and to compete.

When Venus and Serena first appeared in the public eye, their hair bound in beads bespoke their ethnic pride, the braces on their teeth belied their youth, and their grit and determination enabled them to withstand challenges concerning the attitudes of these young African American women in what had traditionally been a white-washed sport. This book shares their stories, and it provides a way to consider the impact of race, gender, and culture, and the influence these have through sport in shaping popular culture. Includes a timeline and a bibliography of print and electronic sources for additional research.
