Product Description
SECRETS OF A TENNIS STAR.is the story of a father's dream for his son, the commitment and discipline of a determined young athlete, and the rise and fall of a tennis legend. Boasting a career that spanned three decades, Andre Agassi lived his adult life in the spotlight. His fans rejoiced with him over his eight Grand Slams and Olympic gold medal, and suffered with him over his plunge in the rankings in 1997 and his failed marriage to actress Brooke Shields. Now, Alexandre de Chambure tells the story of two parallel athletes: himself, a gifted young tennis player from Paris and the other his idol, Andre Agassi, who provided him with inspiration and drive. With insight and sensitivity, de Chambure traces Agassi's incredible journey from his crib (with a tennis ball hanging over it) through his amazing 870 career wins.De Chambure reveals the secrets behind Agassi's tremendous will and determination and why he remains a star even in retirement-both on and off the court. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Agassi Story - Story of Agassi Family
I was kind of expecting an Andre Agassi biography but this book is actually Mike Agassi's story of his family and extended family.I found it interesting to see their rise from poor conditions in Iran to the top of the tennis world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Could not put it down. Amazing stories after stories.
Could not put it down. Amazing stories after stories. However, book is from the dad's perspective, which I knew to begin with.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sincere Reflection, insights into parenthood and family.
This is a book about Mike Agassi and his family.Mikelooks back at his past and how he produced a star tennis player.Mike, is apologetic at times, and proud in others, revealing his true nature.I enjoyed Mike's character in the Agassi story and highly recommend this book for anyone interested in raising a family, as this book is more than just a book about raising tennis stars. The book offers many good insights into parenthood and family.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dissatisfied
I didn't really like the book because there was not enough about Andre really. It was 95% about his father.I guess I was mislead by the title.

5-0 out of 5 stars Authentic and insightful
This is a great book for Agassi fans who want an inside scoop on Andre's life.Mike is a very tough guy and tells it the way he sees it.They have been through a lot.For me, this book provides justification for the admiration I have developed for Andre over the years of watching him play and following his story. The book is a beautiful tale of determination, character, soul, and ultimately, family. It is a quick read, thoroughly enjoyable, and I appreciate Mike's efforts in making it available. ... Product Description
This is an updated biography of Andre Agassi, who said "Image is everything". Despite the George Michael designer stubble, the Farrah Fawcett hairstyle, the earrings, the nail varnish and the shocking pink thigh-hugging cycle shorts, the kid from Las Vegas had the image of being a loser. That was until the 'Great White Hype', as his critics were fond of calling him, became Wimbledon Champion in the summer of 1992. As a baby he used a tiny table-tennis bat to swat a balloon tied to his high chair, at four he was knocking up with Jimmy Connors and Bjorn Borg in front of a huge audience in Caesars Palace, and at seven he was winning under-10 tournaments while his father, a former Olympic boxer, battled officialdom and parents of rival players. Andre Agassi is accustomed to rocking the established order of things. A teenage rebel, he dropped out of school at 13, drank and smoked marijuana. On court he cursed and smashed rackets, while railing against the army-camp discipline of Nick Bollettieri's Tennis Academy. After turning professional on his 16th birthday, his rise was meteoric and, by the age of 18, he was ranked third in the world and had `found God'.His fellow players accused him of gamesmanship and `tanking' (deliberately losing matches). John McEnroe said, "His act is wearing thin". To keep outsiders at a distance, he surrounded himself with an infamous entourage - his brother Phil, his trainer Gil, and his personal agent Bill (dubbed Dr No because of his attitude towards the media). Agassi was earning millions without ever having won a major championship. Then, in only his 13th ever match on a grass court, Agassi beat Croatia's Goran Ivanisevic to win perhaps the greatest prize of all, the Wimbledon men's singles title. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Agassi
If you are an Agassi fan, then this book is a must-have. If you are only a casual tennis fan, it is still a great and entertaining book. Andre has a very colorful story, and this book provides an in-depth look at his life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Life of a star
Extremely enjoyable and interesting book which tells the story of Andre Agassi from birth to the age of 21. Explores the ups and downs of a professionals day to day life and the pressure and expectations placed on the shoulders of a teenage boy. Comments on wins, losses, family, romance and other players. Truly a masterpiece!!!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Only the truth
Going deep into the Andre Agassi character, Robert Philip focuses towards his not-well-known difficult childhood, telling the reader almost everything about Agassi's life in Las Vegas, just before introducing us tothe all-new, all-different life he would go on living in Florida, playingand training to become the player he is today. Remember the book waswritten right after Andre's Wimbledon title, his first Grand Slam, so itwould not tell the reader about anything that happened after. Beside that,it is a great book. ... Product Description
Brad Gilbert, the top tennis coach in America, has guided two of the nation’s hottest players — first Andre Agassi and now Andy Roddick — to the coveted number 1 ranking in the world. And he did it with a unique style that can teach the rest of us everything we need to know about coaching winners—not just on the court, but in the office, classroom, or any other leadership situation.

"Show me a coach," says Gilbert, "who doesn’t listen — really listen — and I’ll show you a probable loser. Show me a coach who domineers and demeans, who manages through fear, and I’ll show you an accident waiting to happen. Show me a coach who doesn’t think it’s just as important to empower the lowliest scrub on the team as it is to cater to the star, and I’ll show you a real short-timer."

When the world’s best players compete, the slightest advantage (or problem) can make all the difference. That’s why Gilbert always goes the extra mile and why he urges every boss to do the same. Whether it’s standing on the other side of the net feeding ball after ball, or endless hours scouting the competition, or just picking up breakfast in the morning, it all counts in building a trusting relationship.Just knowing that their coach is looking out for them unconditionally gives Gilbert’s players an unbeatable edge.

I’ve Got Your Back is filled with insider stories about the pressure-filled world of Grand Slam tennis. From the drama of the U.S. Open and Wimbledon to private moments on the practice court, Gilbert shares what really happens when an already great performer is determined to reach his absolute personal best.

Tennis fans already know Gilbert as the poker-faced guy in the stands with the wrap-around shades and the five o’clock shadow. But they will be surprised to learn that behind the tough guy image is a smart, funny, passionate coach who is intensely competitive yet unflaggingly optimistic and supportive. He’s a role model for anyone who is trying to inspire others to greatness. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars The Sequel that Bombs
This was a bit of a disappointment. First, if you were hoping for a coach's principles on leadership in business, go back to the "Business" section of the bookstore. I understand that by targeting the business world Brad can increase his book sales beyond the sports junkies of the world, but in relating his coaching to other life applications, well...he leaves a bit of a gap.

I really enjoyed "Winning Ugly". In fact, as a tennis player, I found it loaded with great tips (and it even improved my game). But this one is loaded with Brad's "good ole days from the tour" drivel that is certainly is out of date and more than a bit tedious.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone passionate about the game
This book is very inspiring as B.G. suggests the attitude proper to anything we do. `You Really Gotta Love It' is his recipe for success and inner peace. These are not just words, he practises what he preaches. For him, tennis is, and always has been, all about passion. That is why prospective readers must be cautioned: THIS PASSION CAN BE CONTAGIOUS!

Coaches and players will learn how crucial it is to start thinking in the game (based on examples of America's hottest players - Andre Agassi and Andy Roddick). This kind of thinking means drawing conclusions from past experiences, both positive and negative, the latter being, of course, more important.

This book will surely help improve your on-court performance by changing your mental outlook on the game and life in general.

1-0 out of 5 stars Put it back !
This book is disappointing. There is very little that is contained in this book that is worthwhile information to anyone. Brad Gilbert describes (many times) what a great relationship that he has with Andre and Andy and what a great coach he is. There are quotes sprinkled in throughout the book to make it come off that it really is a business type self improvement book, but it isn't even close. Save your money and put the book BACK on the store shelf and put your money BACK into your wallet!

5-0 out of 5 stars Strongly Recommended for Tennis Fans
Having read and really enjoyed "Winning Ugly" I decided to give this book a try even though I had read a review stating that it was geared toward applying his principals to business.I did not find that to be the case at all.Yes, he did give tennis stories and then close with how that story might apply in other's business life. But what I found in this book is an inside look at a talented coach and his relationship with his player. And given that his players were Andre Agassi and Andy Roddick, it's an interesting story for tennis fans.I've never been a big Andre Agassi fan having watched him tank matches at the tournament at my club as well as some of his early antics. And could we please get the announcers to quit talking about him running up a hill as a statement of his great fitness. However, I do have a great appreciation for his talent. From reading this book I have a greater appreciation of Andre the man. He's grown from an undisciplined talent who was lucky to be in the right place with the right talent to an intelligent quality individual. And in some respects you have to give Brad some credit although Gilbert is not attempting to take any.

Although over 1/2 the book seems to mention Andre, there is quite a bit about Andy.It is interesting to hear him compare their different approaches to tennis and life in general.

Overall, I would recommend this book for any tennis fan.I do not think you will be disappointed.Another must read from Brad Gilbert.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing!
Since I am a huge fan of Winning Ugly I bought I've got your back immediately over amazon when it was out (In Switzerland it has not been released yet). I thought like Winning Ugly was advice for players and his second book was more into techniques of coaching. But to my astonishment it was all about Brad, Brad and Brad. All about what great guy he is and what outstanding relationship he has got to Agassi and Roddick. Hey Brad, take a look at Roger Federer who's been without a coach the entire year, in which he won 3 Slams! A coach cannot be that important, right? ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Wait for the real thing
This is not a great book about Agassi. It is more about his dad than Andre and the book is written, not from information gleamed from personal interviews, but mostly from other already published sources. The book does little to fill in gaps in his personal life.I don't think the author had too many primary sources for this book.Save your time and your money for the book that Andre very recently got a $5M check for - that should worth your time to read. This is not.

5-0 out of 5 stars Andre Agassi
Paul Bauman wrote a wonderful book about Andre Agassi called Agassi and Ecstacy. I think the book was really enjoyable to read and it was interesting.I liked it because it had a lot of interesting facts about Andre Agassi's life and tennis career. I would recommend this book to tennis players and fans of Andre Agassi.I also recommend this book for all ages of people who are interested in tennis and who like Andre Agassi. I read this book because I really enjoyed tennis and Andre Agassi.I thought it was a really fun book to read and I enjoyed writing a review on it.

2-0 out of 5 stars I have seen this technique before....
I have seen this technique before in others unauthorized bios... The writer simply goes out searaching for magazines and TV interviews featuring the star on focus, thatn releases a book without having PERSONALLY interviewd anybody related to the star!! Simply sepaking, it's almos a job of Control C, Control V !! (COPY AND PASTE!!)

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting
Although this biography is unauthorized, it contains a lot of information and interesting interviews. This is a great book. Unfortunately, there isn't a biography on Agassi that is more recent.

2-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating subject, terrible writing
Andre Agassi is without a doubt one of the most fascinating, complex tennis players in recent history---but the author, Paul Bauman, was not the one to write about him. Basically, he just took every clipping ever published on Agassi and threw it together in a book with no rhyme or reason. It was poorly organized and poorly thought-out. I would love to find an excellent biography on Andre Agassi but this book is definitely not it. ... Read more

"The best thing in life is to win. The second best thing is to lose--at least you're still in the game."
--Bobby Riggs

He lived by his own rules, and more often than not he broke them. Bobby Riggs was the original bad boy of tennis. Forever remembered as the motormouthed antagonist of Billie Jean King in the famous "Battle of the Sexes," he had a nose for action and an insatiable appetite for competition.

The award-winning book The Last Sure Thing is the story of a hardscrabble kid in a highbrow, "sissy" game; the son of a fundamentalist minister who was a compulsive gambler; a self-proclaimed male chauvinist whose only mentors in the game were women; a short, wispy-haired fellow with a squeaky voice, a bad haircut, and horned-rimmed glasses who became, somehow, a sex symbol. Riggs’ life reads like a history of the modern game. He played and beat legends such as Bill Tilden and Don Budge; rose up the amateur ranks to Wimbledon and world champion; barnstormed on the early pro tours; and then, by sheer force of his personality, became the center of the biggest spectacle in tennis history, a match that transcended sports to become one of the iconic events of its generation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superbly written and enthusiastically recommended biography
There were few professional tennis players as flamboyant and colorful as Bobby Riggs who will probably be forever remembered in the now legendary "battle of the sexes" match against Billie Jean King. What is not so widely known is that Bobby's life off court was as outrageous and theatrical as his on-court behavior. Freelance journalist Tom LeCompte has written a biographical masterpiece with The Last Sure Thing: The Life & Times Of Bobby Riggs which is a "must read" for the legions of this memorable figure of the tennis world, a man who carries a large slice of the credit for popularizing the sport through all levels of American society. This superbly written and enthusiastically recommended biography reads with all the smoothness and drama of a finely crafted novel, and will hook the reader's complete and total attention from first page to last.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
Thorougly enjoyed The Last Sure Thing.Easy to read and full of great details as well as humor.Lots of research went in to the book!I would highly recommend this read for anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Real Life Character Fights His Way to the Top of Tennis
Tom LeCompte has writtten a thoroughly entertaining account of a tennis great who defies categorization. The Last Sure Thing is the story of a world champion who never quite acted like one; a man who was intent on winning in any arena, as long as there were clearly defined stakes involved. Not so good when the returns were unclear or long range, Bobby's family life was filled with gaping holes and serious blunders. LeCompte paints a fascinating portrait of a man who appears to have been sailing above concern for intimacy, loyalty, maturity and fidelity in his relentless and quite possibly compulsive search for the endless game, the bet around the next corner.
Is this type of blind drive necessary to the making of a champion competitor or was Bobby Riggs simply a talented but hapless loser who missed his chance for lasting glory and respect due to immaturity and shortsightedness? LeCompte covers all bases and leaves the reader to wonder - what if... A thoroughly engaging account of a man, a game, and an era - highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dave's thoughts
I couldn't put it down.Loved the character analysis of Bobby and his associates.Great tennis detail, and insight.

5-0 out of 5 stars I loved this book!
I play alot of tennis and I read alot of biographies, and this book is one of the best I've read in either genre.Bobby Riggs--what a character! Can you believe that this man, betting and hustling constantly--his tennis partners, his wife, the largest television audience for a tennis match in history--was actually such a great tennis player? The book somehow conveys easily the story of Bobby's hustling, the history of amateur tennis, the disfunctionality of his marriages, the chaos of his match against Billie Jean King, even the agony of his dying--I mean, WOW!!--what a book!No sooner had I started reading it than friends told me they had heard about it on the radio and asked me for my copy.I have books on RFK, Winston Churchill, and other well-known men lying unfinished on my nightstand. This book I read cover-to-cover in a few nights.Sorry but my friends have taken my copy, or I'd let you read it.But I had to tell someone that this is a great book. ...
