Extractions: 4 - Patty Schnyder(SUI) The 1999 Faber Grand Prix marked the 1st anniversary of Steffi's comeback from knee surgery. Steffi, seeded #3, was much fitter and match-tough this year, and she was ready for the stiffest challenges. Having jumped almost 20 spots in the rankings since last November, Steffi was in comeback mode once again, but, this time, she was going for a title! ROUND 1: BYE ROUND 2: STEFFI GRAF(3) def. ANNE GAELLE SIDOT 6-1, 6-3 QUARTERFINAL: STEFFI GRAF(3) def. BARBARA SCHETT(8) 6-3, 6-2 and soon the gap had been narrowed. With Steffi leading 3-2, the 6th game was again the deciding element of the set. After 6 deuces and numerous opportunities for both players, Steffi held serve to lead 4-2. Although this may not seem to be very significant, it snapped Schett's spirit and revved Steffi up to play better tennis. The last 2 games marked a great improvement in Steffi. Her grounstrokes were much crisper in the 7th game, which Steffi won to lead 5-2. Steffi didn't even have to hit a groundstroke in the final game. She aced Schett on the first point, and hit an unreturnable service to lead 30-0. Steffi finished the match off with 2 conecutive aces, and breezed into the semifinals with a 6-3, 6-2 victory, which, although it may seem easy, was a tough and good win for the champion.

Extractions: In the history of tennis, Magnus Norman had lost only one set the entire French Open entering Sunday's men's singles final against Gustavo Kuerten. By the time Norman could catch his breath, Kuerten had won the first two sets. Kuerten's tennis scores are 6-2, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (8-6) and she has the Brazilian's second French Open title in four years. Norman, the world No. 1, was playing in his first career French Open Grand Slam final. Learn some history of tennis and for the French Open here. The last French femme to win the French was Francoise Durr in 1967, one year before the professionals arrived amid massive social unrest in Paris. Since then, Durr's country has been politely cheering the likes of Chris Evert, Monica Seles and Steffi Graf. At one point this year, eight French players were in the top 80. Only the U.S. had more representatives. And though none of the French women were in the top 10, Mary Pierce appeared likely to re-enter that group in the wake of her run to the Australian Open final. But Pierce's apparent resurgence at age 22 is only part of the story. Nathalie Tauziat played well throughout the spring at age 29-including wins over Anke Huber and Karina Habsudova. Thanks in part to a switch to a longer racquet, and another veteran, Sandrine Testud, was showing uncharacteristic flashes of brilliance at age 25, reaching the quarter finals at Indian Wells and The Lipton Championships. But what makes the French revival particularly encouraging is a new generation of teenagers whose games, tennis rules and tennis scores, unlike Pierce's, were shaped exclusively in France. The group includes Anne-Gaelle Sidot, Nathalie Dechy and Amelie Mauresmo, the world's top-ranked junior last year.

Kremer, who led the Cardinal to the 1997 NCAA team title as a freshman, then turned pro during the summer of 1998 after her sophomore year, is making her second appearance in the Bank of the West. Two years ago, playing as an amateur, she upset 10th-ranked Mary Pierce at Stanford. Monday Kremer won the first set 6-0 and led 1-0 in the second when Van Roost retired due to a neck injury. "I thought she was going to be tough," Kremer said of Van Roost. "I didn't know she was injured when I stepped on the court. I was expecting a very tough match, but it was easier than that, obviously. She definitely wasn't at her best."
