Golmard was impressive in his 6-2, 6-2 demolition of Switzerland's Michel Kratochvil in the other semi, but that was seen as a minor encounter where the participants had benefited from the elimination of more favored players earlier in the tournament.

Extractions: INDIAN WELLS, CALIFORNIA March 13, 2000 G. RUSEDSKI/J. Blake An interview with: GREG RUSEDSKI MIKI SINGH: Questions for Greg. Q. I have to ask the question: Are you available for the next tie? GREG RUSEDSKI: No comment. Q. Why no comment? GREG RUSEDSKI: (No response.) Q. It's obviously an important issue, not through any fault of yours, Greg. At home, nobody knows, a mystery develops. It's a straightforward issue. GREG RUSEDSKI: (No response.) Q. I have to write all this. GREG RUSEDSKI: You can. Fine, you can write. I said, "No comment." It's as simple as that. Q. An extraordinary first set. GREG RUSEDSKI: It was a good match today. I thought he played well the first seven games. Got myself down 15-40 twice, and love-40, but came up with the good serves when I needed them. I was pleased with the way I played and managed to raise my game. I think after I won the first set, I think I really had good control of the match today. Q. Did you know anything about him before you played him? GREG RUSEDSKI: I just spoke to Alex Corretja about him because he played him last week. He told me at the beginning of the match he plays very, very well, can be very flashy. I think in the beginning he played really well for the first seven games. Once I took control, I could see his body language go down a little bit, and really took advantage of that.
Extractions: INDIAN WELLS, CALIFORNIA March 15, 2000 M. MIRNYI/G. Rusedski An interview with: GREG RUSEDSKI MIKI SINGH: Questions for Greg. Q. He played very well, but it must have been a bit disappointing, you never seemed to quite get into it somehow. Q. A lot of work to do, three areas? GREG RUSEDSKI: Well, three areas can be quickly taken care of. I mean, I thought I served pretty well in my first match. I was pleased with that. I didn't hit as many double-faults in any key points. You know, that's just tennis. You've got to keep working on your game and doing those things. Q. Was there a particular difficulty playing against him that you hadn't expected? GREG RUSEDSKI: I never played against him. I think it took me a while to get into reading his serve. In the second set, I read it pretty well; just didn't take the opportunities. You know, it's just very disappointing. Q. What are your plans for the next few days then in the run up to Miami? GREG RUSEDSKI: Just going to take a day off tomorrow, relax, then get to work on those three areas I just discussed. I look forward to that. I mean, this is a great opportunity given up. It frustrates me to lose a match like this because you don't get draws that open up like this too much. With Arazi and Dosedel in the next round, anything can happen here. It's reasonably quick, it's good for my game. To go out that early is obviously a disappointment. Q. Will you stay here or go to Florida where it might not be quite so hot?

Extractions: Tennis star Greg Rusedski has wed sweetheart Lucy Connor - the former ball-girl he fell in love with as a teenager. Celebrity friends from sport and showbusiness saw the couple take their vows in the Douai Abbey church near Newbury, Berkshire. Among the 130 guests - dressed in black tie suits and gowns - were Formula One driver David Coulthard, British Davis Cup captain David Lloyd and fellow player Mark Petchey. Rusedski, 26, arrived half an hour before the scheduled 1600 GMT start in an open-top vintage Jaguar driven by his tennis coach Sven Groeneveld. His bride, 23, arrived 10 minutes late, in a second vintage Jaguar. Red lilies She wore a long-sleeved dress with an eight-foot train, made by top designer Antony Price, and told waiting photographers that she was "very excited". Miss Connor carried a bouquet of red lilies into the church and was given away by her father Terry. Mr and Mrs Rusedski posed for pictures as they emerged after the service which had lasted just over an hour. Greg, who had changed into a morning suit after arriving at the church, kissed his new bride and said: "I feel great. This is the best day of my life." Lucy laughed and joked that she was covering her husband in lipstick as she kissed him once more for the cameras. "I'm absolutely ecstatic," she said. The newlyweds then left together in the vintage Jaguar for a reception at Highclere Castle. Fans thrilled Rusedski, 26, posed for engagement snaps for Hello! with his fiancee back in February but the couple denied reports they had sold rights to the wedding day to the magazine.

Help Has someone given Greg Rusedski a PR adviser for Christmas? I only ask because yesterday's announcement that he will not be playing in Doha, or at next month's Australian Open, arrived just a few hours after Tim Henman revealed that he too will miss the first grand slam of the year. If this was mere coincidence it was a fortunate one, for Rusedski's public image at least. Less than a week ago, you may recall, Rusedski announced he would be playing in Doha, and probably in Melbourne too, but most definitely not in the Davis Cup tie against Australia in Sydney the following month. Then again you may not recall it, since the news was released on Christmas Eve, a Jo Moore-ish piece of spinning if ever there was one. It was the one day of the year when every sports desk in the country lay idle. His bizarre excuse for missing the Davis Cup - "I've got this funny feeling I might be injured" - went almost unnoticed. If only he could time his backhands with similar precision.

Help The ability of four British men, other than Tim Henman and Greg Rusedski, to win a match in their own grass-filled backyard has understandably caused something of a local stir this week, the parochial nature of British sporting success becoming ever more strident and extreme. In world terms the success of Arvind Parmar, Jamie Delgado, Barry Cowan and Martin Lee, however laudable, is an insignificance, for it is Henman and Rusedski alone who are the genuine players at grand slam level. Henman yesterday beat Lee 6-2, 6-3, 6-4, joining Rusedski in the third round tomorrow, the British No.2 defeating Zimbabwe's Byron Black 6-1, 6-3, 6-4. Parmar and Delgado play their second-round matches today against Russia's Yevgeny Kafelnikov and Andre Agassi respectively.
