Extractions: June 6, 1999 PARIS - Former Ole Miss All-American Mahesh Bhupathi teamed up with his partner Leander Paes to win the French Open Doubles Championship Sunday at Roland Garros. The two defeated Goran Ivanisevic and Jeff Tarango 6-2, 7-5 in a rain delayed match which began Saturday and concluded Sunday with their first ever Grand Slam men's doubles title. "We came so close in Australia, but didn't get the title," Bhupathi said minutes after they won. "I saw a picture of us in the paper the next day and it was pretty depressing. Ever since then, we've worked hard and to finally come up with this title is very heartening to us. I'm still in shock. I just spoke to my parents. They showed the match yesterday and the two games today. I'm sure it is very big news in India.@ For Bhupathi and Paes the victory is historic. They are the first players from India to win a Grand Slam title in a country where cricket is the No. 1 sport. The match was 6-2, 5-5 in the final Saturday, before rain forced the postponement of the match until Sunday morning. Bhupathi and Paes held off a determined Ivanisevic and Tarango of the United States, for the win.

Extractions: Elections '98 ... States Tuesday, April 7, 1998 Anand Philar CHENNAI, April 6: It is debatable whether there would have been so much hoopla over the Gold Flake Tennis, or, indeed, even ITC's involvement to such an extent in this venture, had Leander Paes given up the sport in 1993. It was a phase in his then blossoming career when the debts mounted, and he was not making much of a headway as a professional. ``For instance, we owed Gene Mayer, Leander's coach, something like 1.25 lakh dollars. There were no sponsors and as Leander had been playing tennis since he was 14, he was frustrated with everything and just wanted to give up,'' recounted Leander's father, Dr Vece Paes, the 1972 hockey Olympian, in a chat with The Indian Express , here today. ``But then, things turned around and we are now comfortable,'' said Vece, emphasising his relief with an audible sigh. ``I don't think I want to go through with it again. And if I may, I wouldn't advise Indian parents to put their children in an individual sport like tennis. I don't think India can produce a worldchampion simply because we cannot afford it.'' Several years ago, Vece, on a visit to Bangalore, had said he was on the verge of throwing in the towel. ``Tell me, where are the sponsors ? I mean, everyone wants a champion, but no one wants to pay for it,'' he had cried out in utter disgust.

Paes and Navratilova will face Australia's Todd Woodbridge and Greece's Eleni Daniilidou on Sunday. Woodbridge and Daniilidou beat Donald Johnson and Australia's Rennae Stubbs 6-4, 6-2. Navratilova leaped for overheads and volleyed with accuracy as she and Paes broke Ullyett once in the first set and twice in the second. They also broke Hantuchova once in each set. Navratilova was broken once in the first set. Paes won the last two points with a forehand volley and a service return down the line. But he left some tough chances to Navratilova, calling out, "Yours, Martina!" Navratilova won her 56th Grand Slam title in 1995, teaming with Jonathan Stark to win the mixed doubles at Wimbledon. She won the last of her 18 major singles titles in Wimbledon in 1990. Overall, she has a record 167 WTA Tour singles titles and 166 doubles championship, the most recent with Belarus' Natasha Zvereva last May in Madrid.

Outside the Joel Coliseum in Winston-Salem (North Carolina) on that Sunday evening, sipping Brazilian coffee from a huge paper cup, the old man grinned and offered his hand. "Great show," he said. "That Paes is a lovely player. This has been a great weekend here. After all that's happened in this country..." his breaking voice trailed off. Then, moments later, the old man said, "You know, my wife said the other day that it's ridiculous to go and watch a sports event when the country has been traumatised. But I think sport is the answer. I wish George Bush and Osama bin Laden sorted out their differences on a tennis court." Ah, what a dream! If only that could happen!

Extractions: THRILLING WIN FOR PAES-BHUPATHI AT FRENCH OPEN S.C. Bhatt T here are not many examples of a combination of players coming back after a gap of time and succeeding in their second attempt at Grand Slam as Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi have done. Their victory at French Open on June 9, 2001, coming on the heels of their 1999 success tells a story of tremendous achievement followed by parting, so cruel and as yet unexplained. Not only in 1999 they won the French Open but also went on to win the Wimbledon title. Then came the break. Fortunately, it did not last long. Before the break and eventual makeup, there came the US Open at which they reached the final but did not win the title. They are the only pair to reach the final of the US Open as well as the Australian Open and win the French Open Crown and the Wimbledon title in 1999. Their differences were composed and they began to play together and won a couple of titles before they launched themselves to contest a Grand Slam tournament. When they won the first round the countless supporters of the pair in India and many abroad felt relieved and hoped other rounds would be equally productive. Remember that unlike 1999 they were unseeded in the tournament. It makes not much of a difference except that you encounter difficult players on your way up. The organisers did not have any material to go by on them as a pair but gave them entry all the same.
Extractions: Third seeds Mahesh Bhupathi and Max Mirnyi won the US Open men's doubles title with a 6-3 3-6 6-4 victory over Czech pair Jiri Novak and Radek Stepanek. It was Bhupathi's seventh doubles success at a Major but his first in partnership with Belarussian Mirnyi. After dropping the second set, Bhupathi and Mirnyi broke the Czechs to take a 3-1 lead in the third. Novak and Stepanek broke straight back after a controversial line call which tournament referee Brian Earley refused to overrule. Pascual plays in the women's doubles final But Stepanek was broken to love at 4-5, giving Mirnyi and Bhupathi victory in 96 minutes. "I have to thank Max. He had a tough week playing in the singles and doubles but he stuck it out with me," said Bhupathi. Mirnyi and Bhupathi teamed up in April after the Indian ended his long-time partnership with compatriot Leander Paes.

Extractions: Rennae Stubbs and Todd Woodbridge (Aus) [1] bt Lisa Raymond (US) and Leander Paes (Ind) [2] 6-4 5-7 7-6 (11/9) Australians Rennae Stubbs and Todd Woodbridge have claimed the mixed doubles title with a dramatic victory over Lisa Raymond and Leander Paes in the super tie-break. With the scores locked at one set all, the scoring system at the US Open sees doubles matches decided by a tie-break to ten points. In a tight match, Woodbridge served out for the first set after he and Stubbs had forced an early break. The second set went with serve until the 12th game when Paes came to the fore, forcing the break with some fierce returning. In a tense final set, Raymond and Paes had held match point at 9-8 but with Woodbridge serving, the Australians fought their way out of trouble and took the tiebreak 11-9. "It feels great. It's very special because Rennae and I have been playing at the same junior tournaments since we're eight years old," Woodbridge said.

Extractions: The success and strength of the Leander Paes-Mahesh Bhupathi team, the greatest Indian doubles pair, springs from their belief in each other. NARESH KUMAR IT was a historic occasion for Indian tennis when Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi won the men's doubles title at the French Open championships. The four Grand Slam tournaments - the Australian Open, the French Open, Wimbledon and the U.S. Open - are ack nowledged as summits of the tennis world and winning a title in any one of them brings international acclaim and recognition. Paes' and Bhupathi's feat - they are the first Indian pair to win a Grand Slam title - is a matter of great pride and joy. So often in the past year have Paes and Bhupathi failed narrowly to win a Grand Slam doubles title that one was beginning to despair and wonder if they would ever pull it off. In 1998, which was a big year for them, they were in the semi-finals of three Grand Slam tournaments - the Australian Open, the French Open and the U.S. Open - and won a record eight events on the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) tour. This year, at the Australian Open, they were a step closer to the summit but fell at th e last hurdle, losing narrowly to the strong combination of Patrick Rafter and Jonas Bjorkman in the final. During the ATP tournament in Chennai in April, there was talk of a possible split between Paes and Bhupathi. Happily the boys stayed together, won the title in Chennai and have now won their first Grand Slam men's doubles title.
