Some of us who are, let us say, over 25, are mad for Steffi Graf - her hard and well-proportioned limbs, her driving athleticism. But other over-25 lesbians fall for the fierce vulnerability of Jana Novotna, whose defeat by Graf at Wimbledon 1993 drove her to cry on the shoulder of the Duchess of Kent. We knew the lynxlike Jana would eventually prevail. Five years later, at age 29, she seized victory at Wimbledon 1998, beating Nathalie Tauziat. With tears of victory this time, Jana pumped her fists in the air and strode like a lionness to receive the Duchess's congratulations. There are, of course, dykes who go for the young glamour girls: femmes-with-attitude like the prettily smug Martina Hingis and the gorgeous prima donna Venus Williams. Of course, this Martina has 23 singles titles to date, including Wimbledon 1997; some consider her unstoppable. But not all of us. Some of us prefer the quiet, intense power that is Aranxta Sanchez Vicario. Aranxta is a fireball with smarts and relentless aces. Aranxta holds 27 World Tennis Association singles titles and 4 Grand Slam singles titles. But she doesn't do bikini photo shoots. Teenage tennis phenom Alexandra Stevenson told ASAP Sports Reporting that as a child while watching Martina Navratilova win Wimbledon, she said to her mother, "That's going to be me someday." This may not have been exactly what her mother wanted to hear. In July, Samantha Stevenson, mother of Alexandra, complained that lesbian tennis players might prey upon her daughter in the locker room. She later said she made the statement to deflect attention from the soon to be known fact that Alexandra is also the daughter of basketball great Julius Erving. (Huh? Not sure about that logic, Samantha.) Lindsay Davenport, who routed Alexandra at Wimbledon this year, shot back that Alexandra's Mom should keep her opinions to herself and let her daughter grow up.

Gay Today: People By Jack Nichols Only a year has passed since French tennis pro AmelieMauresmo came out of the closet at age 19. She'd just worsted http://gaytoday.badpuppy.com/garchive/people/011700pe.asp
Extractions: By Jack Nichols O nly a year has passed since French tennis pro Amelie Mauresmo came out of the closet at age 19. She'd just worsted leading champion Lindsay Davenport in a match at the Australian Open. Ms. Davenport had hardly been a good sport about it. After her loss she'd said of Amelie: "A couple of times I thought I was playing a guy, the girl was hitting it so hard. She's so strong in those shoulders. She hits the ball, you know, not like any other girl. She hits it so hard and with so much topspin. Women's tennis is not usually played like that. ... The shoulders looked huge. I think that they must have grown." Tennis star Amelie Mauresmo, seen here playing in a tournament in Rome, came out last year at age 19. Mauresmo was a finalist in last year's Australian Open. Later Ms. Davenport felt it necessary to clarify her remarks, insisting that she hadn't meant to cast aspersions on Amelie's sexual orientation. But Tina Turner's famed question "What's Love got to Do with It?" got one of its best answers in the person of Amelie. She credited her victory to the presence of a newfound love in her life, running to the arms of Sylvie Bourdon, and telling reporters: "Looking up at Sylvie during the match was that little extra support that I needed. It gave me strength. Finding Sylvie and having such a good personal life now has made the difference in my tennis. It had been the missing part of my life."

Extractions: Availability: Usually dispatched within 24 hours Hardcover - 256 pages ( 1 November, 1998) Ebury Press; ISBN: 0091865654 This is rather more than a simple history of the Davis Cup as it celebrates its 100th birthday. It is the contextual portrait, by Richard Evans, of a complex institution set within the larger frameworks of sport and this century's great events and dynamics. Dwight Davis's annual challenge cup has proved to be the catalyst for tennis's entrance onto the international stage and it remains a significant force to this day. Evans charts both the cup's influence on the evolution of international tennis as well as the sporting, social and political storms which have buffeted the development of the Davis Cup ever since.
