Links Biography Amelie started being interested in tennis when she was 4 and was watching a match between Yannick Noah and Mats Wilander. Shortly after that, Amelie received a racket from her parents and that was the start of a brilliant career. Throughout her youth, she was always playing against older, more experienced players but always showed great talent. In 1988, she was contacted by the French Federation and offered to train with the elite of her age, offer that she accepted of course. In the juniors, Amelie had tremendous success even winning the French Open and Wimbledon in the same year (1996). That is how Amelie got to the level where she is right now... Up to now, her pro highlight is without any doubt her final at the Australian Open in 1999 where she was eventually defeated by #1 player Martina Hingis...

Extractions: Results MELBOURNE, Australia Amelie Mauresmo crashed from a dream week to a nightmare exit at the Australian Open. Mauresmo, a finalist a year ago and a victor over three of the top five players in a tournament title run last week, succumbed to her own wildness and the wily tactics of left-hander Patty Schnyder 6-4, 6-4 in the second round Wednesday. Patty Schnyder celebrates after her upset Wednesday of last year's finalist, Amelie Mauresmo. "Today was one of those days you should probably stay in bed," Mauresmo said. "Of course, I'm very disappointed, but it's one of those days where nothing is really working. Every part of my game was down."

Extractions: French Open Predictions Minus Venus and Amelie Dateline: 05/28/01 Second seed Venus Williams and fifth seed Amelie Mauresmo, both considered top contenders for the 2001 French Open, lost in the first round Monday. Of all the seeded players, Venus drew the toughest first-round opponent in Barbara Schett, ranked 24th in the world. Schett's 6-4, 6-4 win was her first over Venus in five tries. It was their first match on clay, though, and while Venus has had some good results on clay, it mutes her biggest weapon, power. Schett was able to get to all but a few of Venus's shots, and, perhaps going for too much, Venus committed 43 unforced errors. Amelie Mauresmo's draw was not as tough, but 60th-ranked Jana Kandarr was able to out-steady her for a 7-5, 7-5 upset. Although Mauresmo's four titles this year have evidenced, among other assets, a major improvement in her mental toughness, she had displayed remarkably poor shot selection in her recent loss to Jelena Dokic at the Italian Open. Her loss to Kandarr was similar. She blew a 5-1 lead in the second set and committed 37 unforced errors.
Extractions: Of the remaining seeds, Capriati has had the best clay court results this spring. She has been working hard on building the fitness needed to win on clay, and she's as powerful as anyone on the tour. Hingis still holds the number one ranking, and the slower surface at Roland Garros will help against her more powerful opponents. Dokic played an almost flawless Italian final, and she has shown great mental toughness in matches where family controversies might have distracted most players. She is always competitive with the top players. Justine Henin is a bit of a long shot, but she is a rising star with some good wins on clay, including one over Venus Williams at the recent German Open. Among the men, I would rank the top contenders as follows:
