Extractions: Flushing Meadows, New York August 26, 1997 C. MARTINEZ/J. Capriati An interview with: CONCHITA MARTINEZ Q. Those four breakpoints at 3-1 in the first set, saving those, was that the key of the entire match right there? CONCHITA MARTINEZ: Well, of course it was very important. You never know what's going to happen if you lose that game or not. But, I mean, I think I was changing ends, playing with the wind two more games. Seems like she had a little trouble with her serve, especially the second serve. You know, I hang in there. I didn't want to give her anything, fight. You know, I was much more consistent than she was. Q. How is she playing now? CONCHITA MARTINEZ: Well, she's hitting the ball really hard. I mean, but she's making some unforced errors. You know, I mean, of course I'm playing pretty good myself. I've been having three, four good tournaments this summer. I'm very pleased with the way I'm very motivated to do well here at the US Open. Q. Every time she plays, everybody starts to look for some sort of comeback by her, starts looking to what she was before she took so much time off. Is she anywhere near that? Can you make any comments about how she is now?

Links To dare to live out a dream. To take a chance, to follow your hearts desire, to leave all behind in pursuit of a dream. To sacrifice, to endure hardship, in order to live out the big moment. Many people dream, few achieve. Concepción Martínez Bernat was born in Monzón, a small Spanish town in the region of Aragón, that lies in the shadow of an ancient Moorish fortress. Outside her familys apartment lie two cement tennis courts where Conchita would hit balls against a wall, sometimes until late into the evening. A monotonous activity soon became an obsession, as Conchita hit ball after ball against her wall, often pretending she was in big matches with John MacEnroe or Martina Navratilova. Eventually, her game outgrew Monzon, and at the tender age of 12, Conchita attended a academy for gifted athletes in Barcelona. Being away from home at such a young age proved a difficult adjustment, and Conchita struggled with loneliness and homesickness. At age 15, Conchita met a strong willed Dutchman named Eric Van Harpen who brought her to a tennis academy in Switzerland to train. It was there that she suffered, matured, strengthened, and saw her tennis skills blossom. By the end of 1989 during a solid rookie year, Conchita rocketed to the Top Ten, where she spent most of her career.
