Extractions: Forget about the main stadium! The best action was on court one today, on another steamy scorcher of an afternoon in Toronto. The tennis was great, as fascinating duels featuring Martin-Johansson, Kafelnikov-El Aynaoui and Ríos-Moya kept the fans on our favourite court enthralled. And a little angry jawing between players never fails to spice up ones day at the tournament: gamesmanship, cramping and Andy Roddick were once again mentioned in the same breath today. Previous head-to-head: Martin leads 4-0 This match kicked off the days play on Court One, which was filled to capacity with about 2,000 fans for this meeting of two well-known players. Todd Martins excellent serving and greater tactical variety made the difference, as he extended his career domination of Australian Open champion Johansson to 5 wins, losses with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 decision. The players competing in these 11:00 AM matches were fortunate. Skies were overcast at this time, and it was only in the later matches that the sun shone relentlessly and conditions became brutally hot. An on-court thermometer registered the temperature at 37 degrees in the mid-afternoon.

He was called "Grand Duke" for his weight 5 kg (11 lbs). Yevgeny didn't suspect what he would be doing in future: tennis-courts, millions of spectators all over the world or wins at the most prestigeous tournaments. Certanly not, everything didn't come to him in a moment but needed much time of hard trainings. Lepyoshin Anatoly became the new coach Yevgeny Kafelnikov. At first the coach didn't make plans with Yevgeny thinking of young sportsman like nothing comperative with others, although Kafelnikov was noticed and well sized by Tarpishchev Shamil. He wrote "Yevgeny Kafelnikov bursted into the elite, his very talanted tennis player in his teens he was graded higher than Medvedev Andrey ". Forgotten about there discords Lepyoshin and Kafelnikov worked together. The coach showed himself as a mature psycologist and determed man. He helped Yevgeny a lot, made him disciplined, made him think of the deal very serious. And who might knows could Yevgeny Kafelnikov reach such a marvelous sucsess if another coach trained him at that moment. Nevertheless the sucsess was very unbelivable: wins in ATP tour, win in Grand Slam - Roland Garros one at a time in single and doubles. No one among the Russins could reach the highest point till Yevgeny could!

Extractions: MILAN, Italy (AFP) - Frenchman Julien Varlet produced an upset at the 380,000-euro ATP men's indoor tennis tournament here on Thursday by ousting number four seed Xavier Malisse of Belgium in the second round. Qualifier Varlet, 27, dug deep after losing the first set to win a tense encounter 2-6, 7-5, 7-6 (8/6) and secure a place in the last eight. Russian Yevgeny Kafelnikov, a double Grand Slam champion having lifted the French Open at Roland Garros in 1996 and the Australian Open in 1999, also booked a place in Friday's quarter-finals with a comfortable 6-4, 6-3 victory over Denmark's Kristian Pless. Kafelnikov will now meet Jonas Bjorkman who needed just 50 minutes to overcome Italy's Andrea Gaudenzi. Gaudenzi, who beat Australian Open quarter-finalist Younes El Aynaoui of Morocco in the first round, was outclassed by the Swedish veteran who was successful with 69 per cent of his first serves. Bjorkman said he was in good shape and ready to halt a bad run of results against Kafelnikov. "I've prepared well in the last couple of months and am happy with my performances," he said.

It is the contextual portrait, by Richard Evans, of a complex institution set within the larger frameworks of sport and this century's great events and dynamics. Dwight Davis's annual challenge cup has proved to be the catalyst for tennis's entrance onto the international stage and it remains a significant force to this day. Evans charts both the cup's influence on the evolution of international tennis as well as the sporting, social and political storms which have buffeted the development of the Davis Cup ever since.
