The second-generation Olympian overwhelmed Sergi Bruguera of Spain, 6-2, 6-3, 6-1, then succumbed to the emotion of the victory on the medal stand. He shared a post-victory embrace with his father, Mike, an Olympic boxer for Iran in 1948 and 1952. Extractions: 11:26 PM 7/2/1996 The United States will clearly be favored in nearly every category. The Americans boast the top ranked man and woman with No. 1 Pete Sampras and co-No. 1 Monica Seles on the squad. Seles, from the former Yugoslavia, became an American citizen in 1994. No. 3 Andre Agassi will also be a favorite for a medal, though he has struggled this year, most notably with a first-round loss to a qualifier at Wimbledon. MaliVai Washington got the United States' third singles spot after Jim Courier and Michael Chang, who were both ranked higher, turned down the invitation. "You have to respect their decision," men's coach Tom Gullikson said. "We were hopeful everybody who got the invitation would accept. Scheduling is always difficult, and different players have different goals." Houstonian Richey Reneberg, once the No. 1 doubles player in the world, will play doubles. He is expected to team with Washington. On the women's side, Seles will be joined by Chanda Rubin, Lindsay Davenport, Mary Joe Fernandez and Gigi Fernandez. The Fernandez duo will attempt to defend their 1992 gold medal. Gigi Fernandez is the No. 2 ranked doubles player in the world, having recently captured the French Open title with Davenport. Mary Joe Fernandez is No. 5. Mary Joe Fernandez also won the bronze in singles in Barcelona. She will not, however, play singles in Atlanta.

Extractions: AP Sports Writer Aug. 3, 1996 Stone Mountain, Ga. Two-time gold medalists Gigi and Mary Joe Fernandez are already looking forward to the Sydney Games. "We decided we'll come back in 2000," Mary Joe Fernandez said with a laugh. "Gigi will only be 36." The Fernandezes, who are not related, beat Helena Sukova and Jana Novotna of the Czech Republic in the doubles final Saturday, 7-6 (8-6), 6-4. The Americans also won the gold at Barcelona. "This is better, because it's harder to defend," Mary Joe Fernandez said. "It's nerve-wracking, and especially in your home country." "The potential for choking is great," Gigi added. Their victory gave the United States three of the four golds in tennis. Andre Agassi beat Sergi Bruguera in the final of men's singles Saturday, and Lindsay Davenport won the gold in women's singles Friday. Davenport watched the doubles final, waving an American flag when her teammates clinched the victory. Fernandez-Fernandez won the first-set tiebreaker when Novotna hit a volley long on set point, then took the lead for good in the second set at 4-3, breaking serve when Mary Joe Fernandez put away a forehand volley. Gigi Fernandez served out the final game at love, putting away an overhead on match point.

Extractions: Latest Gigi News It was announced on July 10th 2002 that Gigi has been named head coach of the women's tennis team at the University of South Florida. "We feel like we've won a Grand Slam event ourselves in attracting Gigi Fernandez to take over our women's tennis program," says USF director of athletics Lee Roy Selmon. Since her retirement, Gigi has remained every bit as active in tennis, coaching the Puerto Rican National Team since 1999 and also working as coach to Rennae Stubbs, who has ranked as high as number one in the world doubles rankings, and presently ranks second. Since beginning with Fernandez as coach, Stubbs has won five Grand Slam doubles titles. In August 2001, Gigi enrolled at USF to pursue completion of a bachelor's degree. In her first year at USF, Fernandez took 39 credit hours and compiled a 3.8 grade point average. "Our women's tennis program has long been noted for its outstanding achievement in academics," says Selmon. "Gigi Fernandez is committed to that principle, as evidenced by her aggressive approach to seeking her degree. Coach Fernandez will serve as an outstanding role model for our student-athletes both as a student and as a highly successful player."
