Extractions: Flushing Meadows, New York August 30, 1999 M.J. FERNANDEZ/ M. Oremans An interview with: MARY JOE FERNANDEZ Q. Mary Joe, you're off to another good start here at the U.S. Open, the third set was your strongest. You really seemed to want to close that out. Of course I ran into Tony in the parking lot, and he said that's why she played so well. MARY JOE FERNANDEZ: I think I got momentum going, I got some confidence after winning the second set. It helped me that I got off to a good lead in the third. I think I broke in the second or third game and I got a little bit more confidence. Q. The health, it's always a question mark with you. MARY JOE FERNANDEZ: Yeah. Q. How healthy are you these days? MARY JOE FERNANDEZ: Well, I've been struggling with my wrist for a little while. It's kind of been haunting me for the last couple weeks and I'm struggling a little bit, trying to get through it and work through soreness and stuff. It's getting better. It's just difficult. These courts are pretty fast so I'm having a tough time with the racquet, hitting the ball. But besides that, everything else is okay. Q. You made another person happy other than Tony with your marriage to come next spring. Monica Seles is really enjoying doubles with you. What do you like playing with Monica about most?

Extractions: When Mary Joe Fernandez was a little girl, she wanted to play tennis like her older sister, Mimi. So her father cut down an old wooden racket to fit her hand. From those beginnings in Miami, Florida, Mary Joe rose to become one of the best women tennis players. Though she turned pro at the age of 14, she did not drop out of school as many other players do. Mary Joe worked her tennis tournaments around her school schedule, graduating from Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart in 1989. In 1992, and again in 1996, Mary Joe captured Olympic gold with her doubles partner, Gigi Fernandez (no relation.) Despite her fame, she has never become ungrounded. In addition to being a talented tennis player, Mary Joe is also a kind, caring person, supporting many who are less fortunate.

MARY JOE FERNANDEZ: Well, I actually strained it a little bit yesterday and when I was playing. I guess I aggravated it more and I guess I just started pulling it more and started feeling the pain running down my leg, and I actually felt it, I think, the end of the first set. Q. At what point did you do it in the match yesterday, do you remember? MARY JOE FERNANDEZ: No. I don't remember. Q. Was it late or early? MARY JOE FERNANDEZ: It was middle, I think. Q. Do you feel it now when you are running? MARY JOE FERNANDEZ: I felt it today. You know, I haven't torn done anything. It's just a pull right now and it is real sore and sensitive, so. . . Q. How did playing the doubles affect that, aggravate it more or MARY JOE FERNANDEZ: Aggravated it more and it would be wiser not to play; rest it up tomorrow and get treatment on it and hopefully it will be better in 24 hours, 48 hours. Q. You seemed to be called for several footfaults in the last two matches.

Extractions: Mary Joe Fernandez Mary Joe Fernandez is a tennis player. She isn't just an ordinary tennis player, though. She is an athlete who has had to overcome obstacles and dodge many difficulties. She competes in both singles and doubles. I hope you will learn a lot about this tennis wonder. Mary Joe Fernandez was born Maria-Jose in the Dominican Republic on August 19, 1971. She loved the sport of swimming as a child, but the first time she ever swung a racket at a ball, she knew that tennis was her sport. Gardner Mulloy, her first coach, was a former U.S. tennis champion. She says the best advice that was ever given to her was given by him when she was six years old. "(Gardner Mulloy) told me to play as many tournaments as I could, so I could learn how to lose. It is just as important to avoid being a sore loser as it is to enjoy being a gracious winner!" The first time Mary Joe competed in tennis was when she was six years old, and she has loved it since. Mary Joe was beginning to really be recognized by many people by the time she was 14. She was considered a tennis prodigy. She was called by a pro "the most mentally tough person in the history of tennis." "She's going to be the best ever!" as another predicted. Where did all this recognition come from? It was Mary Joe that had won four Orange Bowl junior titles in a row. But that is just the beginning. Shortly after she turned 14, in the year of 1985, Fernandez went to the U.S. Open, and defeated Sara Golem, 6-1, 6-4, earning her not only a U.S. Open match, but she also became the youngest male or female player to ever win a U.S. Open match.

Extractions: LATINO JUVENILE BIOGRAPHY FERNÁNDEZ Mary Joe's favorite moment was the doubles match in Barcelona in which she and Gigi Fernandez won Olympic gold. This victory meant a lot to her. To win the gold, the pair had to defeat the Spanish doubles pairArantxa Sanchez Vicario and Conchita Martínezin front of the king and queen of Spain. It was a sweet victory for Mary Joe because she had been asked to play for Spain but had refused. "I'm an American," she said. "I could play for Spain, where my father was born, or the Dominican Republic, where I was born. But...it would be difficult to play for another country. I am very patriotic." In fact, she had been asked to play in the 1988 Olympics for the Dominican Republic but had said no. She said she would rather represent the United States someday.

Extractions: Q. How do you feel about playing Seles in the next round? MARY JOE FERNANDEZ: Well, I feel good. I am happy to be playing against her. It is going to be a tough match, but I have been playing well. I played well today; last couple of matches, pretty more aggressive. I feel all right going into it. Q. Your thoughts on the match today, Mary Joe. You have been walking around all week just like you were going to do some damage. MARY JOE FERNANDEZ: It didn't look like that in the beginning of the tournament. First few matches were a little rough for me. So I think after I got through those, I felt a little bit lucky to still be here. And I am taking advantage of it now. I have played aggressive. I have gotten more of my shots, and I played well today. It was a tough match. Even though it seemed like I was winning easily at the beginning, she was still playing well, and she got more aggressive, and you know, third set, it could have really gone either way.
