Extractions: Born in Kyoto in September 1970, Date was encouraged to take up tennis from the age of six, as her parents were keen practitioners of the sport themselves. Although her mother and father supported and nurtured her budding talent, it's interesting to note that they held the traditional attitude toward people born left-handed (as the young Date was) and painstakingly coached her to play right-handed. Her parents sent her to Sonoda High School, famous for producing tennis players, and she was soon discovered by leading scout Akira Misikuni. In 1986 she won the All Japan Junior Championship, and was in the top four of the All Japan Championship the next year. In the same championship in 1988, she beat top pro Etsuko Inoue, and after graduation from high school in 1989 turned professional. She appeared in the world rankings at the position of number 321 and soon began attracting attention through her impressive performances. In 1991 her ranking leapt from 112 to 32 after defeating world-number-three Gabriela Sabatini at the Los Angeles WTA semifinals. There then began a series of triumphs over the world's greatest tennis players, putting Date in the spotlight as few Japanese sports people had ever been before. She won her first major title after upsetting both Amy Frazier and Sabine Appelmans at the 1992 Japan Open. In 1994, she won her first overseas championship after defeating Mary Joe Fernandez at the 1994 New South Wales Open in Australia.

News / Advantage Vietnam IN October last year, former professional tennis player date kimiko brought herpopular children's tennis classes overseas for the first time, visiting http://www.jica.go.jp/english/news/2002/07_03.html
Extractions: Now serving for the junior set, Date Kimiko recentry took her "Kids Tennis" classes to Vietnam IN October last year, former professional tennis player Date Kimiko brought her popular children's tennis classes overseas for the first time, visiting schoolchildren in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Date has been holding her "Come on Kids Tennis" classes in Japan since she retired from the professional circuit in 1996 after a career that saw her rise as high as fourth in the world rankings. Her goal is to acquaint as many people as possible with the sportÑin particular those for whom tennis would normally be inaccessible. The "Kids Tennis" class in Vietnam was a Japan-Vietnam exchange project held under the auspices of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). In Hanoi, approximately 60 local primary school kids and Japanese youngsters attended the class, and in Ho Chi Minh City about 40 Vietnamese children participated. Since 1986, when Vietnam introduced the Doi Moi policy, which aims at a transition from a planned economy system to a free economy system, the country has achieved high economic growth, and the number of people playing tennis for pleasure has been increasing. However, the tennis population still comprises mostly high-income earners. None of the Vietnamese children who took part in the class had ever gripped a tennis racket before the event and they were all very excited when given a soft ball and light racket, designed specifically for "Kids Tennis." In the class, they delightedly received basic instructions on serving and receiving from Japan's former tennis great.

Extractions: Other News TIME Asia TIME.com CNN Asia FORTUNE.com ... AOL.com By Peter Cordingley I T WAS 1988, AND a 17-year-old Japanese schoolgirl was at Wimbledon to play in the junior tournament. The record book shows she sank early on with barely a bubble, but for that timid teenager, Date Kimiko, the journey across the globe wasn't wasted. "I saw the Center Court for the first time," she recalls with awe still in her voice. "I never expected to stand there some day." She has and nearly gloriously but there will be no more Wimbledons, or any other international tournaments, for Date. Asia's top woman player has announced her retirement from tennis, bringing to an unexpected close a career that at times seemed to promise the very best, but, in the end, never quite delivered on the big occasions. But there was no sign of regret as Date explained her decision to the Tokyo press Sept. 24, just four days before her 26th birthday. "I always thought that 25 would be the age to turn a chapter in my life," she said. "Besides, I have had a lot of injuries to my knees and ankles too many to continue playing at the top level." Standing up to the big hitters has also probably taken its toll. At 1.63 m and weighing only 53 kg, Date is almost diminutive compared with some of the women pros on the tour. Monica Seles, for instance, is 1.79 m and 65 kg, and Steffi Graf 1.75 m and 59 kg. "I am not particularly powerful and I have been fighting at the limits of my mental and physical powers," the Japanese said.
