2002 NCAA Women's Swimming & Diving Championships Expect to continue to see great swimming tonight, and quite possibly a 100 FreestyleAfter breaking 1996 quadruple gold medallist amy van dyken's 50 free record http://www.texassports.com/mainpages/wsw_ncaa/releases/032302_01.html
Extractions: After winning two titles in smashing style last night, Natalie Coughlin looks to be on fire. The CAL sophomore cruised this morning, touching in 1:53.83, nearly three full seconds off her American record in this event. Even while cruising, Coughlin's time is the 11th fastest performance ever. Coughlin should shatter her record tonight, and could quite possibly become the first woman ever under the 1:50 barrier. In a tight battle for second between AUBURN freshman Margaret Hoelzer and SMU's Alenka Kejzar. Hoelzer is the SEC champion in this event, while Kejzar finished second last night in the 400 IM. Also in the final is the bronze medallist in last nights 100, ARIZONA's Beth Botsford. After breaking 1996 quadruple gold medallist Amy Van Dyken's 50 free record, GEORGIA's Maritza Correia has her eyes set on another multiple Olympic medallist's record: Jenny Thompson's 1992 47.61 standard. Looking very smooth this morning, Correia stopped the clock in 48.22, becoming the 7th fastest performer ever. Correia's Bulldog teammate, Stafanie Williams is in second after the morning swims, touching in 48.77 to hold off two AUBURN tigers, sophomore's Rebekah Short and Eileen Coparropa. Coparropa finished 6th at last year's NCAA meet, while Short is in her first final in this event at NCAA's. Last night's 200 freestyle champion Sarah Tolar and 2000 Olympian Erin Phenix should also provide some fast times tonight.

Extractions: Table of Contents The National Collegiate Athletic Association, at its annual convention in January of 1981, voted to begin conducting national championship events for women during the 1981-82 school year. Championships in nine sports, including swimming and diving (considered a single sport), were established that year. The first National Collegiate Women's Swimming and Diving Championship was hosted by the University of Florida in March of 1982. Florida won that first meet, but since then Texas and Stanford have dominated, winning 15 of the 16 team championships between 1983 and 1998. However, the University of Georgia has won three straight team titles before the streak was broken by Auburn in 2002. Top of Page History Biography Glossaries Calendar Quotations ... Extractions: The Georgia women's swimming and diving team posted 386 points at the 2002 Women's NCAA Championship in at the Jamail Texas Swimming Center hosted by the University of Texas at Austin to finish in second place - the program's seventh consecutive top five finish. Auburn won the 2002 title with 474 points. Georgia's runner-up finish is even more impressive considering the 2002 edition of the championships was one of the fastest meets in history, as 10 American records were surpassed, including four by the Lady Bulldogs. The Lady Bulldogs were involved in a little record breaking of their own, as two record-setting relay performances seemed to bookend a meet filled with personal-bests. Maritza Correia won two individual events in spectacular fashion and aided the two relay wins, setting Georgia, NCAA, American and U.S. Open marks in the process. She finished fifth in the individual point total with 52 points. Correia gave Georgia its first individual NCAA champion since Kristy Kowal won the 200-meter breaststroke on the final day of the 2000 championships, as Correia opened up half a body length on the rest of the field in the 50y free and stopped the clock at 21.69, breaking 1996 Olympic gold medallist Amy Van Dyken's 1994 record by 0.08 of a second. Correia bettered Jenny Thompson's mark in the 100-yard freestyle by five one-hundredths of a second to win her second individual goal of the meet. Williams finished second in the event with a personal-best time of 48.37.
