Extractions: By Randy Franz, appeared in the October/November 2000 issue of REAL SPORTS magazine. Incentives change with age. Most 18-year-olds, you give them a new pair of shoes and a couple of CDs and they'll go through a wall for you. It's not until later that they learn they can command a better price. So today, on the eve of the Olympic Games in Sydney, the U.S. swimming team, by dint of its members' ages, has evolved from candy apple tastes to the fine palate borne of maturity. A perfect example is Amy Van Dyken. She didn't have to go for gold in 2000. Van Dyken, 27, already made her mark on the sport, becoming the first U.S. woman to win four gold medals in a single Olympics in the '96 Games. She also won world championships in 1998, and, since then, had shoulder surgery twice. It seemed the right time for Van Dyken to pack it in and start learning the ski slopes near her home in Littleton, Colo. Then her fiancé, pro football player Tom Rouen, upped the ante in a most material way. With Van Dyken's arm in a sling and her motivation on life support, Rouen appealed to her need for speed. He offered to buy her a Porsche Boxster if she got back in the pool and made the Olympic team. "Well, OK," Van Dyken responded. "That'll get me out of the sling." She realizes it sounds a bit crass to have a new car be the goal rather than the lofty ambitions of Olympic participation. But when you make a 50-minute drive every day to the training pool, as Van Dyken does, having new wheels is a biggie.

Aug. 15, 2000 INDIANAPOLIS (AP) Jenny Thompson dropped out of Tuesday's episode of "The Jenny and Dara Show," leaving Dara Torres and Amy Van Dyken battling for supremacy in the 50-meter freestyle at the U.S. Olympic trials. Torres qualified fastest in 25.23 seconds - half a second off the American record she set in June. Van Dyken, the defending Olympic and world champion, was second in 25.45. Thompson decided not to swim the event after qualifying for Sydney in the 100 free and 100 butterfly, beating Torres both times. She'll also swim at least two relays in the Olympics. "I've beaten Jenny every time but one race," Van Dyken said. "I was not really concerned about her."

Extractions: Aquatics Water Polo Womens water polo was one of the new events at the Sydney Games. When one plays water polo, the players are prohibited from touching the bottom or side of the pool. There are four seven-minute quarters, and water polo players may swim up to five kilometers in a single game. One must have the endurance and technique of a wonderful swimmer, a football players skill in passing, dribbling and shooting for a goal, and a rugby players strength to battle for the ball. Water polo started as the aquatic version of rugby. It began in the mid-1800s in England, before it started evolving into an aquatic resemblance of football (soccer). It had become so popular in Europe and North America, that it became an Olympic sport in the Olympic Games in Paris. Tall and long-armed athletes excel in this sport because 85 percent of the body is under water. The body is also about 85 percent submerged with all of the grabbing, holding, kicking, wrestling, and yanking of bathing suits, which makes the game even tougher. Only eight teams qualify in the womens division, while twelve teams compete in the mens division at the Olympic Games.

Traditionally, swimmers let their arm and leg hair grow all season long to provide resistance during training, then shave it off right before a major meet like the Olympics. The physical and mental effect makes the swimmers feel as if they're sliding through the water much faster. Overview: On paper, this figures to be a three-way race, as there are only three women under 58 seconds: Jenny Thompson, Dara Torres and Inge de Bruin of the Netherlands. The world record in the 100 fly had stood for 18 years, before it was broken by Thompson (57.7) in Aug. 1999 (coincidentally, in the same pool). Then de Bruin came along and whittled it down to 56.69, and then 56.64. Thompson lost the American record to Dara Torres (57.58) in the prelims at U.S. Trials. She nearly got it back during the finals (57.59). It will be fascinating to see what transpires, now that all three are wearing bodysuits and are set to peak here in Sydney.
