Extractions: The News Tribune of Tacoma, Wash. (August 6, 2000 12:28 p.m. EDT http://www.sportserver.com ) - The typical teenager would be - as baggy-short wearing, slow-strutting, Milton-quoting kids are always saying to each other at the mall these days - throned on highest bliss. "We're talking about maybe making a trip to Australia? In September? Without Mrs. Pinklewurst and Mr. Gunkelheimer serving as chaperones? OK, but like, uh, what's the catch? We gotta collect fossils? Keep a journal? No? How tight! "One last question: Is Australia anywhere near that island where they do 'Survivor?' " Then again, the typical teenager doesn't spend four hours a day in swimming pools, and another two hours a day commuting back and forth from them. The typical teenager doesn't lift weights three days a week during the summer, then head home for the real heavy lifting of a calculus textbook. Were this swimming thing merely a hobby, Megan Quann might look at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney with the wide eyes of a 16-year-old awarded an entire month of ditch days. But because it's a passion, because it's her life, there's a steely resolve in Quann's sparkling smile.

Extractions: Skipping school Jamal Muthala; The News Tribune Sometimes it is not about who's participating in high-school swimming, it's about who's not. Bellarmine Prep sophomore Ryan Verlatti won the Class 4A state 200-yard freestyle title last year while competing for Stadium High because the Lions do not have a swim team. Winning a state championship as a freshman is rare, but the road was paved for Verlatti to try and join an elite group of winning four titles in a row in the same event. That won't happen, however. Verlatti has given up competing with a high-school program to concentrate on working out full-time with the Tacoma Swim Club in an attempt to earn a spot at the U.S. Olympic Trials in the summer. That is not to say Verlatti will not return to swimming at Stadium. His plan is to compete for the Tigers as a senior in 2004-05. "To reach your goals, you have to make sacrifices," Verlatti said. "I know this is something that will pay off in the long run." Verlatti's path is not uncommon for competitive swimmers. Former Bremerton High star Dana Kirk, now a freshman at Stanford University, swam as a ninth grader in her high-school program, took two years off to concentrate on national goals and returned in 2002 to capture the state 100 and 200 butterfly titles in record fashion.

Extractions: World records were set and New York's reputation solidified as nearly 170 of the world's top swimmers from 30 countries came to the metropolitan area to compete in FINA's only World Cup stop in the United States, November 27-28, 2001, at the Nassau County Aquatic Center in East Meadow, Long Island. FINA, Federation Internationale de Natation, is the international governing body of swimming. "With swimmers coming in from all over the globe and spectators filling the stands, this is further proof that New York can support the Games in 2012," said Governor George L. Pataki, who awarded the first medals on the opening night of competition. "New York has a reputation as a state that supports great international sporting events, and the World Cup is just one more example of that." This year's field of World Cup competitors was much deeper than last year's, with 20 Olympians among the 168 competitors. Not included in that tally was American Natalie Coughlin, who set two short-course world records in consecutive nights in the backstroke, as well as an American record in the butterfly. Coughlin set her first world record in the 200 meter backstroke (2:03.62) and her second in the 100m back (:57.08), bettering the old mark by more than a second. The 19-year-old set an American record in the 50m butterfly (:25.83).

Extractions: Sixteen-year-old Diana Mocanu of Romania has won the Olympic women's 100 metres backstroke title, snatching the gold from Japan's Mai Nakamura. Nakamura went clear from the start and turned in 29.17 seconds, inside world record schedule. She held her lead till well down the return length when Mocanu shot past to win in one minute 00.21 seconds, an Olympic record. Nakamura had to settle for the silver in 1:00.55, while Russian-born Nina Zhivanevskaya of Spain took the bronze in 1:00.89. Mocanu missed the 1:00.16 world record of China's He Cihong by just 0.05 seconds. Rolph Newcastle's Sue Rolph, the Commonwealth Games 200m individual medley silver medallist, saw her hopes of reaching the Olympic final at the event dashed. The 22-year-old finished sixth in her semi-final in 2:15.98 - around a second outside her best - and wound up 12th overall. An amazing finish gave sixteen-year-old American Megan Quann the women's 100 metres breaststroke gold, ahead of Penny Heyns who faded at the finish.
Extractions: By Randy Franz, appeared in the October/November 2000 issue of REAL SPORTS magazine. Incentives change with age. Most 18-year-olds, you give them a new pair of shoes and a couple of CDs and they'll go through a wall for you. It's not until later that they learn they can command a better price. So today, on the eve of the Olympic Games in Sydney, the U.S. swimming team, by dint of its members' ages, has evolved from candy apple tastes to the fine palate borne of maturity. A perfect example is Amy Van Dyken. She didn't have to go for gold in 2000. Van Dyken, 27, already made her mark on the sport, becoming the first U.S. woman to win four gold medals in a single Olympics in the '96 Games. She also won world championships in 1998, and, since then, had shoulder surgery twice. It seemed the right time for Van Dyken to pack it in and start learning the ski slopes near her home in Littleton, Colo. Then her fiancé, pro football player Tom Rouen, upped the ante in a most material way. With Van Dyken's arm in a sling and her motivation on life support, Rouen appealed to her need for speed. He offered to buy her a Porsche Boxster if she got back in the pool and made the Olympic team. "Well, OK," Van Dyken responded. "That'll get me out of the sling." She realizes it sounds a bit crass to have a new car be the goal rather than the lofty ambitions of Olympic participation. But when you make a 50-minute drive every day to the training pool, as Van Dyken does, having new wheels is a biggie.

Isn't that what 11 and 12 year olds swim? I never understood why women did not have a 1500 (they now do) but why add the sprints? On the other hand, adding 50's of strokes does give more events to the stroke specialists." What do you think? More About Swimming Headlines
