Traditionally, swimmers let their arm and leg hair grow all season long to provide resistance during training, then shave it off right before a major meet like the Olympics. The physical and mental effect makes the swimmers feel as if they're sliding through the water much faster. The United States swimmers capped an astounding performance in Sydney Saturday with gold medals and world record performances in the men's and women's 400-meter medley relay. The wins gave the U.S. team a total of 14 gold medals, cementing one of the strongest showings ever in an Olympic pool. Jenny Thompson earned her tenth career Olympic medal in the women's relay, and the American team of Thompson, Megan Quann, B.J. Bedford and Dara Torres obliterated the previous world mark by nearly three seconds, finishing in 3:58.30. Thompson now holds more swimming medals than any other woman, and her eighth gold means she's alone in second place among female Olympians in any category.

Sept. 23, 2000 SYDNEY, Australia The United States left the pool with a bang Saturday, setting world records in decisive relay victories over host Australia on the final day of Olympic swimming. Jenny Thompson won her eighth career relay gold her 10th medal overall and Gary Hall Jr. overpowered Aussie Michael Klim on the anchor leg as the Americans won the women's and men's 400-meter medley relays. But a raucous Aussie crowd had something to cheer about, too. Grant Hackett and Kieren Perkins went 1-2 in the grueling 1,500 freestyle, continuing their country's dominance in the mile.

Extractions: Aquatics Water Polo Womens water polo was one of the new events at the Sydney Games. When one plays water polo, the players are prohibited from touching the bottom or side of the pool. There are four seven-minute quarters, and water polo players may swim up to five kilometers in a single game. One must have the endurance and technique of a wonderful swimmer, a football players skill in passing, dribbling and shooting for a goal, and a rugby players strength to battle for the ball. Water polo started as the aquatic version of rugby. It began in the mid-1800s in England, before it started evolving into an aquatic resemblance of football (soccer). It had become so popular in Europe and North America, that it became an Olympic sport in the Olympic Games in Paris. Tall and long-armed athletes excel in this sport because 85 percent of the body is under water. The body is also about 85 percent submerged with all of the grabbing, holding, kicking, wrestling, and yanking of bathing suits, which makes the game even tougher. Only eight teams qualify in the womens division, while twelve teams compete in the mens division at the Olympic Games.

Arriving at her high school with a police escort, 16-year-old Olympic gold medalist Megan Quann smiled at the crowd of students gathered to greet her on her first day back to school. "Hi guys!" she said. The teen-agers stared shyly at the champion swimmer for a few moments, and then the questions started: How was it? Did you bring your medals? (Fun, and no.) But enough about medals. One 16-year-old girl wanted to know more important things: "So, did you meet a lot of hot swimmer guys?" Megan laughed. "No most of them were on our team." "Wow!" The girl said, impressed. "Talk about team spirit!" Boys, homecoming dances, math classes and homework it's back to normal high school life for Megan Quann after winning Olympic gold medals in the 100 meter breaststroke and 400 meter relay in Sydney. Classmate Rechelle Cox, 16, always knew Megan was a special athlete after all, this is the girl who beat all the boys in arm-wrestling in junior high.
