Extractions: America's Lenny Krayzelburg took the Olympic title and record to add to his world crown with victory in the men's 100m backstroke. Krayzelburg won in 53.72 to slice 0.14 off the time set by fellow countryman Jeff Rouse in 1992. It was the 17th Olympic record to be set in the pool in just three days of competition. But Krayzelburg made hard work of his win, nearly allowing Australia's Matt Welsh in during the final 20 metres. The Ukrainian-born American seized the lead on the first length, turning just 0.02 seconds outside world record schedule but he looked certain to break his own mark - 53.60 - midway through the final length. Concentration But a lapse in concentration cost him the record bid and nearly gold. Welsh took the silver in 54.07 and world championship bronze medallist Stev Theloke of Germany collected an Olympic bronze in 54.82. In the men's 200m butterfly, Stephen Parry kept British hopes alive with a third place finish in his semi-final heat for a place in the final.
