Extractions: SYDNEY, Australia Fu Mingxia was a tiny figure atop the intimidating 33-foot platform eight years ago in Barcelona. Just a teen-ager, she won her first Olympic title by more than 49 points. Now grown up and faced with much younger, talented competition within China, Fu again displayed a powerful will to win. The 22-year-old rallied on her next-to-last dive to claim the 3-meter springboard title Thursday, joining Americans Greg Louganis and Pat McCormick as the only divers with four gold medals. "Maybe I have a lot of gold medals, but I don't consider myself special," she said. "I consider myself equal to my teammates and a lot of other divers." Fu also became the first woman with five career medals. After her Barcelona victory, Fu swept the springboard and platform events in Atlanta, then won silver in synchronized 3-meter Saturday. Louganis, Klaus Dibiasi of Italy and Xiong Ni of China are the only men with five medals. Louganis won double gold in 1984 and repeated in '88. McCormick swept the golds in '52 and '56.

Extractions: SYDNEY, Australia For one week, the Americans ruled the Olympic pool. For the second week, the balance of power shifted. No one can touch the Chinese divers, who overwhelmed the United States and everyone else with power, elegance, consistency and depth. Barely making a splash which is good for this sport the Big Red Machine became the first country to win five diving medals at a single Olympics. Rubbing it in, the Chinese also captured five silvers. The U.S. team settled for one measly medal a surprise gold by Laura Wilkinson on the women's 10-meter platform. Excluding the 1980 boycott, the Americans carried home their lightest load since 1912. "Diving is so deep around the world now," U.S. coach Jay Lerew said. "Every year, it gets deeper and deeper." Ditto for swimming, but the Americans managed to maintain their dominance in the signature sport of the Sydney Games.

Extractions: Everything about diving Historians believe that diving dates back to the ancient Games of Greece. A 2,500-year-old tomb in Naples shows a man diving from a platform, possibly a cliff or rock. High diving off cliffs, as made famous by those who leapt from great heights into the sea of Acapulco, predates the sport of diving that developed in the 17th century, when gymnasts in Sweden and Germany practised over water at the beach for safety, attracting large crowds. Eventually, such gymnastic training developed into what was known as "fancy diving", a term still used when the sport came to the Olympic Games in 1904 in the form of a plunge and swim under water. In Britain in the 17th century, diving competitions were held in which rivals plunged into ponds and rivers, a dangerous pastime for man and duck. When diving reached the Olympic Games in 1908, it began as a graceful addition to the programme, points being awarded for elegance and style. Then, between Paris in 1924, when it adopted its "modern" format, and Atlanta in 1996, diving stayed true to its tradition. No longer; here comes synchronised diving, and Britain is among the nations that could capitalise from the introduction of diving's sole innovation in 76 years.

Extractions: Dec. 2002 The rare sport of diving enjoyed a terrific showing of talented athletes at Gay Games VI in Sydney. On the same platform where David Pichler competed as one of over 20 out lesbian and gay athletes in the 2000 Olympics, dozens of lesser known yet still talented athletes took the plunge. Derek Douglas competed in solo and synchronized diving with Mike Schuerger from Chicago, with whom he dived at US Masters events. Born in Denver, Douglas grew up in Bay Area, and started diving in high school in Walnut Creek. He now lives in Berkeley and works for Hero Design firm. Like many school athletes, he stopped in 1987, after a successful college diving career. "It's hard to get yourself to a job and a pool, and have a life," he said. With a back injury canceling his plans to compete at New York's Games IV, and the last-minute indecision by Dutch hosts of Gay Games V leaving most divers absent, the honor of diving at the 2000 Olympic Stadium offered Douglas a chance to shine on the platform in Sydney last month.

Extractions: My Other Sports Greg Louganis Wallpaper The Sport of Swimming Swimming is an individual team sport where you learn through yourself and through others For me, swimming is something I cannot live without. It has been part of my daily life since I was six years old. It is definitely more than 'just a sport' to me, because I love to swim. I think that I would be a different person if I never started swimming. Competitive swimming consists of the freestyle (which is the most popular), butterfly, back stroke, and the breast stroke. When you first start out swimming you compete at age group meets, from there there are senior meet, international meets, and if you get good enough there are the Olympic trials and then the Olympics. Swimming is a great sport to get into. I was a little too lightly built to be really competitive although my times in the butterfly and the breast stroke were pretty decent, so I got involved in spring board and platform diving. My coach was right, I was a natural and did extremely well.

Extractions: John Weyler; Times Staff Writer Greg Louganis, considered the greatest competitive diver ever after becoming the only man to win gold medals in platform and springboard events at consecutive Olympics, revealed that he has AIDS in a television interview that will be broadcast Friday. Louganis, 35, who won four gold medals at the 1984 and 1988 Summer Olympics, retired from the sport in 1988 and has been pursuing an acting career. He disclosed his homosexuality at the Gay Games in New York last summer. In a transcript of the ABC "20/20" interview released Wednesday, Louganis said that "according to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) standards of AIDS versus HIV, I do have AIDS," and that he tested positive for the AIDS virus six months before the 1988 Games in Seoul after discovering that a former companion was dying of AIDS. During preliminaries of the springboard competition, Louganis hit his head on the board while performing a complicated dive and began bleeding. A U.S. Olympic Committee doctor, who was unaware of Louganis' condition and did not wear protective gloves, closed the two-inch gash with five stitches.
