Extractions: Front Page National Southern States Other States ... Next FUKUOKA (JAPAN), JULY 30. Australia's Ian Thorpe was selected as the outstanding athlete of the ninth swimming World Championships which ended on Sunday. Thorpe, who also won the award for best male swimmer, received an Arita-Yaki porcelain plate as his prize after winning a record six world titles. Inge de Bruijn of The Netherlands was named as the best female swimmer after winning three titles. The award for the best athlete was decided by the media and open to all competitors in swimming, open water swimming, synchronised swimming, water polo and diving. The 18-year-old Thorpe was a popular and obvious choice after winning more gold medals in Fukuoka than any swimmer at a single meet in the history of the World Championships. He broke his own World records to win the 200 metres, 400m and 800m individual freestyle finals, and also anchored Australia to victory in each of the three men's relays. De Bruijn, 27, matched her performance at last year's Sydney Olympics by winning three individual gold medals, completing the 50M and 100m Freestyle double and also claiming victory in the 50m butterfly.

The 18-year-old 57.93 is held by Mary T. Meagher of the United States. "I'm so satisfied with that time," de Bruijn said. "I felt so strong." De Bruijn's compatriot Pieter Van den Hoogenband easily won the 200-meter freestyle in 1:47.09 to take his fourth gold medal, but failed in his bid to break the world record. Britain's Paul Palmer was second in 1:48.01, followed by Italy's Massimiliano Rosolino with 1:48.37. "Everybody expected me to win easily and that put pressure on me. I never thought about swimming a world record in this race, I just wanted to win," Hoogenband said.

Extractions: SYDNEY, Australia Inge de Bruijn won the 100-meter freestyle Thursday, her second gold medal of the Olympics, denying American Jenny Thompson a victory in her final chance for an individual gold. Inge de Bruijn, left, might have won Thursday, but Jenny Thompson is still the most decorated U.S. women's swimmer. De Bruijn, of the Netherlands, won in 53.83 seconds; she won the 100 butterfly last Sunday. Therese Alshammar of Sweden won the silver in 54.33. Thompson and teammate Dara Torres tied for bronze in 54.43 seconds. "I've never had a bronze before," Thompson said. Thompson's medal made her the most decorated woman swimmer in history with nine career medals. Dawn Fraser of Australia, Kornelia Ender of Germany and American Shirley Babashoff are tied with eight. The 27-year-old Thompson also broke a tie with Babashoff for most Olympic medals by an American woman. Thompson's failure to win a gold by herself was reminiscent of the 1996 Olympics, where she surprisingly didn't qualify for an individual event. She won three golds on relays, but postponed retirement to chase an individual gold.

Extractions: Holland's Inge de Bruijn added the women's 50m freestyle gold to her Sydney Olympic haul on Saturday, while America's Jenny Thompson picked up her eighth Olympic gold in women's 4x100m medley relay. With successes in the 100m butterfly and 100m freestyle already behind her, de Bruijn powered home over the shorter distance to beat Sweden's Therese Alshammar in to second while Dara Torres of the United States took the bronze. Her winning time of 24.32 secs was outside the world record mark she set in the semi-finals. Great Britain's Alison Sheppard finished seventh in 25.45 secs after making an excellent start. "I'm a little bit disappointed by my place and time, but even my best time would not have got a medal today," said Sheppard. "The experience of the whole thing has been amazing though and I tried to enjoy it today. I was going well for the first 25 metres but at the end I guess I just wasn't fast enough. "I've made an Olympic final and I've got to be happy with that. There was a lot more pressure in the final than the semi-final."

Extractions: Dutch swimmer Inge de Bruijn has cruised to another gold medal in the Olympic pool as she dominated the women's 100 metre freestyle from start to finish. De Bruijn beat off the attentions of Sweden's Therese Alshammar by a full half second, while the two Americans Dara Torres and Jenny Thompson could not be separated to share the bronze. De Bruijn, who broke seven world records and equalled another in a nine-week spree earlier this year, broke her own 100metres butterfly mark to win her first Olympic gold on Sunday. She had lowered the 100 freestyle world mark on Wednesday when clocking 53.77 in the semi-finals. De Bruijn's time in Thursday's final was an impressive 53.83.
