Product Description
Almost as soon as Gazza burst on to the scene at Newcastle United, the young Geordie was the centre of attention: Vinnie Jones's notorious ball-handling showed the lengths people would go to try to stop him. Then, with England on the verge of possibly reaching the World Cup final in 1990, came Gazza's tears - the moment that brought a whole new audience to the sport and helped set the football boom of the 1990s on its way.But then came a career-threatening injury, mental health problems, self-confessed alcoholism and family disputes, as life in the full glare of the media spotlight became too much. Now, at the end of his top-flight playing career, Gazza is ready to confront his demons. The result is quite simply the most remarkable footballing story you'll ever read: what it's like being Paul Gascoigne, in his own words. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Slaying the Demons
I am still unsure as to the value of this book and as to why it was actually written. Gazza, Englands most talented soccer player of his generation tells an honest account of the demons that he lives with on a daily basis. The extent of his addictions, the daily struggles and the complexities of being Gazza are all here in brutal honesty. The book reads like a series of letters both from Gazza and from his councellor to the reader and acts something like a diary. It's more coffee-table literature (that demands very little of the reader), than an autobiography. The benefit being that you can 'dip' in and out of the book at your leisure and the down-side being that it lacks consistency. I learned a little about Gazza here but not enough to recommend the book to anyone. Reading the book did not affect me positively or negatively, nor did it give me anything to occupy my mind. If you like Gazza, buy his autobiography 'Gazza. My Story'. If you are obsessed with Gazza, then you could consider buying this.

4-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
I don't know anything about soccer players, but wanted to read about bipolar disorder. I love his conversational writing style and all his English-isms throughout the book. I was saddened at how much Paul Gascoigne had to deal with...besides bipolar disorder, as if that's not enough.Yet, it's really heart-warming to see how much he accomplished and continues to accomplish...a great deal more than many who don't have his afflictions.
I don't think anyone would be disappointed reading this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Honest Reflection.
Being Gazza is an honest look back at his life by Gascoigne. Before this book I was just familiar with the media image of him as, basically, a clown who threw away his talent by too much partying. Now I understand the medical problems underlying his behavior. The book reveals just how much suffering he has gone through and demonstrates how celebrity helps worsen serious medical problems.Takes a lot of courage to be this frank and the book is an easy read for anyone interested in the person rather than just his football career. ... Product Description
Paul Gascoigne is the most naturally gifted English midfielder of his generation. Yet as he approaches his late thirties, he has become something of a sorry figure, a man who has failed to fulfil his potential. This authoritative biography of a footballing genius seeks to explain why Gascoigne has never been able to defeat his demons. Gascoigne has always been a footballer whom the media have been quick to criticise and slow to understand. His off-the-pitch activities usually generate more column inches than any flashes of brilliance on the pitch but Gazza is something more than a tabloid buffoon. At his best, he is a compelling confirmation of the reason millions of fans still go to football matches every week to see the sublime skill and magical improvisation that makes the heart beat faster. By talking to the coaches who tried to guide Gascoigne's talent, and the mentors who have influenced him, author Paul Simpson here attempts to redress the balance by focusing on the one reason we still care about Gazza - his football. Daft as a brush, endearing, irritating and inspiring, as a footballer he has defined our nation for over a decade. We cried with him in Turin, laughed with him in the Indian summer of Euro 96 and, nervously, watched as he has tried a succession of comebacks as far afield as China to prove to himself and others that he still has it in him. ... Product Description
This account of Gazza's life concentrates on his exploits in Italy. Starting with Italia '90 and his mercurial performances for England, it goes on to document the shattering of his knee cap and subsequent injury in a Newcastle nightclub; the tension and intrigue surrounding his on-off transfer to Lazio and the behind-the-scenes wheeling and dealing; the ups and downs experienced while playing in Italy's Serie A; and finally what the future holds. This book exposes the dubious activities of his agent, Mel Stein, and those claiming to act in Gazza's best interests. It examines Gazza's relationship with fellow players, with first-hand profiles from close friend Glenn Roeder, ex-manager Terry Venables, former team-mate Gary Lineker and current Lazio coach, Dino Zoff. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars The Inside Story as seen from the consultant
In the beginning of the 1990s Paul Gascoigne was one of Europe's best soccer players. He had become very popular after he had played very well during World Cup 1990, and he was praised as a huge talent when he returned to England. Not long after he was bought by an Italian club named Lazio, and the author of this book, Jane Nottage, became his consultant.

After a while Jane Nottage was given her notice, and she responded by writing this book. In this book she tells a lot about Paul Gascoigne's life on and off the pitch, and she reveals that she wasn't very happy with the soccer player's wife. Jane Nottage portrays her as bossy and difficult. The author does mention that Sheryl Gascoigne had told her that her husband once had pinned her to a wall and told her she wasn't the greatest and that she was not allowed to socialize with the other soccer wives. Still, it doesn't seem to ring a bell for the author: Only later were we able to see photos of a bruised and battered wife in the papers.

The book is easy to read, but I must admit it I prefer Paul Gascoigne's own book. Somehow Nottage's book is too superficial, and all the time I feel that she wrote the book because she is upset that she got the boot. It's obvious that she blames Sheryl Gascoigne for this.

Product Description
Paul Gascoigne is one of England's most talented footballers. The success or failure of the England team has much to do with whether Gascoigne is present and fit - sadly, not always the case in recent games. His most recent injury, a broken leg sustained during practice in April 1994, has been another bitter blow to English football. A Geordie, Gascoigne first came to prominence as a teenage recruit to his local club, Newcastle United. His precocious talent marked him out for attention from the big league clubs, and in 1988 struggling Newcastle sold him to Tottenham Hotspur for #2 million. Soon Spurs were themselves struggling, financial problems having precipitated a boardroom battle. Gascoigne was again sold, this time to the Italian club Lazio for a record breaking #5.25 million. Before the transfer went through he suffered a serious injury in the 1991 FA Cup Final against Nottingham Forest, which kept him out of football for a year. Paul Gascoigne's abilities on the field enable him to turn a game single-handed. His antics off the field have not always been so successful, and the ensuing controversy has meant that he is seldom out of the media spotlight.Despite all this attention Gascoigne is more popular than ever. Worshipped by the lads, he is also a cult figure among the intellectuals. "Gazza" is a superstar: a footballing genius who is also a larger-than-life personality. ... Read more
