The 36-year-old midfielder was Major League Soccer's most valuable player in 1996. The Fusion is one of two expansion clubs that will start play in MLS next season. Along with the Chicago Fire, the two new clubs increase the 2-year-old league to 12 teams. "Carlos Valderrama is an outstanding addition to the Fusion," said vice president and general manager Leandro Stillitano. In return for Valderrama, Tampa Bay will receive an allocated player from MLS and Miami's second overall pick in either the 1998 college or supplemental draft. Valderrama, known for his flowing blonde hairstyle, is a three-time Colombian player of the year. He has made 103 appearances with his national team, including the 1990 and 1994 World Cups and Sunday's World Cup qualifying game against Argentina in which he scored Colombia's lone goal in the 1-1 draw. The final score was 1-0 to Colombia. The pressure on Colombia to beat Tunisia in their second World Cup game was overwhelming and the team that faced an early departure from the World Cup has managed to deliver. Captain Carlos Valderrama insisted that the squad would not allow the absence of banished striker Faustino Asprilla to affect their performance on Monday. Tunisia lost 2-0 to England in their opening Group G tie in Marseille and the North African side's Polish-born coach Henri Kasperczak believed Colombia's recent off field distractions would make his task all the easier. Asprilla, the gifted former Newcastle striker now with Parma in the Italian league, was so appalled at the lack of service he received from the ageing Valderrama and teammates when he was posted as the lone striker against Romania, that he staged a public revolt after being substituted. Coach Hernan Dario Gomez told him to pack his bags and go home. An announcement from Gomez in the wake of the Asprilla affair that he was resigning after the World Cup did nothing to lift the poisoned atmosphere. Some players thought that Asprilla, who later apologised, should have been given a second chance.

Extractions: Colombia ) The most famous Colombian player and a regular star performer in the MSL where he is noted for his assists. That is the main feature of his game and the cause of the greatness that has seen him hailed as one of the best players in the world during the past ten years. A former South American Player of the Year knee injuries have meant he is much slower than in the past but he uses possession very well and dictates the play for the Colombian side. Every passing moves comes through him and he regularly sets up goals for players around him but rarely finishes himself. His freekicks are not as dangerous as they once were.
