Extractions: (ShaunBotterill/Allsport) The Croatian-born striker was included in the Belgium squad by coach Robert Waseige for the friendly against Slovakia after a 19-month absence from international soccer. 'Two months ago I was nowhere and seriously thought about ending my career as a footballer. At that point I had no aim, I didn't believe in anything anymore,' the 32-year-old was quoted as saying in local media reports. 'In one year I had four operations on my adductor muscles. The pain I suffered was really terrible. I can only say that my presence among the Devils a month and a half before the World Cup is a victory for me,' he added. The last time Strupar played for Belgium was in a World Cup group six qualifier against his native country in September 2000, which resulted in a 0-0 draw.

This is an award that is organized by Football Magazine, and it is beginning to get more appreciation, because it are the players themselves who can vote and not the journalists as with the Golden Shoe. The captain of Anderlecht won the award clearly before topscorer Branko Strupar of Genk and Franky Van der Elst of Club Brugge. Earlier this year, Zetterberg also won the Golden Shoe - award. The 27-year old Zetterberg has been playing at Anderlecht since 1987. He was lend out to Charleroi from 1991 to 1993.

Extractions: Struggling Premiership side Derby County have agreed a £3 million fee to sign KRC Genk striker Branko Strupar. The 29 year old player was born in Croatia but has played in Belgium for the past four years. Strupar was granted Belgian citizenship earlier this year and new national team coach Robert Waseige has used him regularly since he qualified to play for his side. At Genk two seasons ago he hit 22 goals from 31 games and last term he fired in 18 goals in 31 games to become second top scorer after being leading scorer in 1998. He has claimed four goals in five games for his national team and Derby want to sign him on a three year contract.
Extractions: Belgium threw away a win in Charleroi as they allowed Portugal to equalise with ten minutes to go. An untidy encounter was enlivened in the 56th minute when Derby County striker Branko Strupar capitalised on a loose ball by Portugal goalkeeper Pedro Espinha when his clearance deflected off a defender. Ricardo Sa Pinto hit a low shot to equalise after a cross caused confusion in the Belgian defence as Belgium let the victory slip. The home showed showed little of the imagination and attacking play that had created a convincing 3-1 win in Lecce against Italy last November.

Extractions: MICHAEL MANN BRUSSELS - Besides home advantage, Belgium have one other key factor in their favour at this summer's Euro 2000 finals no one expects them to win. This lack of expectation has not been lost on coach Robert Waseige who reckons that if Belgium can survive the group stage, they may just catch the championship's big boys on the hop. "Our group's difficult, but I think we can get to the quarter-finals," Waseige said after last month's impressive 2-2 draw with the Netherlands. Belgium followed that up in April with a good 2-0 win over Norway in Oslo, raising expectations a notch or two higher. Waseige said: "Once we get to that stage (the quarter-finals), we have to take every game as it comes, and the underdogs' chances get better and better." Belgium also have the advantage that they find themselves in what should be the 'easiest' group in a tournament without easy groups. They kick off Euro 2000 on June 10 against Sweden in Brussels' King Baudouin stadium and also face Turkey and Italy, a team they beat unexpectedly 3-1 in Lecce in a friendly in November.

Extractions: (Brussels - Att: 50,000) Co-hosts Belgium enjoyed the perfect start to their Euro 2000 campaign with a very impressive 2-1 victory over Sweden in Brussels. Bart Goor and Emile Mpenza were the heroes for Belgium with fine finishes either side of half-time that made Sweden pay for some uncharacteristically sloppy defending. Sweden had started with Henrik Larsson on the bench, but front pairing Kennet Andersson and Jorgen Petterson linked up well to put the Belgian defence under pressure early on. Key moments 1 min: Sweden have first shot of tournament 43: Nilsson's error is follow by Goor's cool finish 46: Mpenza steams through and fires home 53: De Wilde error hands Mjallby open goal 81: Patrik Andersson is sent off The lanky Andersson came closest with a header from a high swinging corner wihile Petterson threatened several times to burst through.
