Extractions: "T HE day of glory has arrived," goes Frances national anthem. And indeed it had.At the sprawling Stade de France in St Denis on July 12, Didier Deschamps and his brigade scripted a golden chapter in their countrys soccer history by dethroning Brazil and lifting the glittering World Cup. The historic victory sparked off nationwide celebrations with over 1.5 million people thronging the Champs Elysees in Paris alone to give vent to their ecstatic feelings. According to rough estimates, the revelry surpassed the Liberation Day celebrations of 1944. The French victory, which incidentally was the first for the hosts in the history of the World Cup, was more of an anti-climax. Not many had placed their bets on the French, as the hosts, despite having an excellent goalkeeper in Fabien Barthez and an enviable defence manned by Lillian Thuram, Marcel Desailly and Laurent Blanc, lacked a strike force as efficient as that of former champions Brazil, Argentina and Italy, or even that of England, Germany, Croatia and Holland.

Extractions: Gannett News Service (Tuesday, June 23, 1998) Morocco and Cameroon came close to joining Nigeria as African representatives in the second round of the World Cup, but both fell victim today, with officiating decisions playing key roles one direct, one indirect. Morocco appeared to be qualified from Group A following a 3-0 rout of Scotland, and with Brazil leading Norway 1-0 after Bebeto's goal in the 78th minute. But Norway, needing a win, scored two goals in the last eight minutes. With time running out, U.S. referee Esse Baharmast called defender Junior Baiano for excessive contact with striker Tore Andre Flo in the box, and Kjetil Rekdal converted the ensuing penalty kick in the 89th minute. Brazil players protested, saying the contact was minimal if at all, but to no avail. The victory put Norway at 1-0-2 and five points, one ahead of Morocco, which finished at 1-1-1 and four points. Brazil already had clinched Group A with two earlier victories but went all-out against a Norway team that in two matches the past couple years had beaten Brazil once and drawn once and whose coach Egil Olsen had boasted about it. "It's incredible," Olsen said. "I'm amazed at what happened."
Extractions: decision over Columbus. COLUMBUS, Ohio (Wednesday, August 30, 2000) Mamadou Diallo continued his assault on Major League Soccer goal record and the Tampa Bay Mutiny needed every tally the striker from Senegal could offer. The Mutiny erased a two-goal deficit in the second half and won when Diallo completed his hat trick in the 81st minute of a 4-3 triumph over the Columbus Crew before 15,941 at Crew Stadium. With the decision, the Mutiny (16-11-3, 51 points) moved three points ahead of the Chicago Fire (14-9-6) in Major League Soccers Central Divisio, though the Fire has three games remaining and Tampa Bay two. The Mutiny also moved into a scrum atop the overall table, tied for first place with the MetroStars (16-10-3) and one point ahead of the Kansas City Wizards (14-7-8) and the Los Angeles Galaxy (14-8-8). The Mutiny, which completed a four-game sweep this season of Columbus, visits Kansas City in Saturday. The Crew, which received the first two goals of the season from forward Miles Joseph, saw its postseason hopes dealt a serious blow, falling two points behind the eighth and final playoff position. With his three tallies, Diallo now has 26 and is one short of Roy Lassiters regular-season best of 27.

Extractions: After Donald Trump's organization deposed Russian policewoman Oxana Federova as this year's Miss Universe, the crown passed to the runner-up, Miss Panama Justine Pasek, who was crowned on September 24. The precise reason for Federova's ouster has not been stated by either Trump or Federova, though the pageant cited unspecified contract breaches. Pasek's elevation occupied the front pages of Panama's daily newspapers for several days. In an even more significant blow the freedom of information law, the Supreme Court denied a petition by the former Christian Democrat mayor of Panama City and legislator Willy Cochez, who wanted to know the names and salaries of all alternate legislators (suplentes) who are on the government payroll. Comptroller General Alvin Weeden refused to divulge the information, and the court ruled that since Cochez doesn't have a direct personal interest in knowning these things, he has no right to that information. Essentially the court held that government spending, and especially corruption, are none of the public's business. Abstaining from the decision were three of the nine magistrates, Arnulfo Arjona, Graciela Dixon and César Pereira. Transparency International's Fernando Berguido called the decision "a death blow to the Transparency Law."

Biggest Surprises: Mexico, Paraguay and Croatia. The first two seemed headed for the exit before the tournament even started, but Mexico rediscovered its soul, used three straight comebacks to tie Netherlands for group title and nearly upset Germany in round of 16. Paraguay, an unsophisticated defensive side, beat out highly rated Spain and 1994 semifinalist Bulgaria to advance, then took France to double overtime. As for Croatia, don't let the rookie tag fool you; despite being from a new country, the Croatian players have been well seasoned in the top European pro leagues. They finished second in an easy first-round group, then upset Romania and Germany to advance to semifinals.

Extractions: [ Lazio and Parma lead the way in Italian spending spree By Gideon Long ROME, July 17 [(Reuters)] - The hectic Italian soccer transfer market settled down for a summer holiday this week with Lazio and Parma emerging as the surprise big spenders of Serie A. The transfer market closed last weekend just over a month before the world's most prestigious domestic league rolls back into action. The market re-opens on August 10. Lazio head off for the summer break having spent more than any other club in Italy in preparation for the 1998-99 season a colossal 140 billion lire ($79 million). In comparison, traditional big spenders Inter Milan and AC Milan have each spent half that while Juventus have forked out a meagre $16.9 million to reinforce their 1998 championship-winning squad. Lazio's bill includes a $19.7 million entry for Chilean striker Marcelo Salas from Argentina's River Plate. The Rome side have also paid out $17 million for Barcelona's Ivan de la Pena and $14 million for teenage striker Dejan Stankovic from Red Star Belgrade. The Yugoslav teams up with compatriot Sinisa Mihajlovic, who has joined from Sampdoria for $12.4 million, while Portuguese duo Sergio Conceicao and Fernando Couto come from Porto and Barcelona respectively for a further $12.4 million combined. The money fuelling Lazio's latest purchases comes from their successful stock market flotation in May, days after they won the Italian Cup and reached the UEFA Cup final. Perhaps with an eye on their balance sheet, the club has been careful to offset the acquisitions by selling some of the key players from last season. Argentine World Cup defender Jose Antonio Chamot and Yugoslav midfielder Vladimir Jugovic both go to Atletico Madrid for a combined $19 million while Italy striker Pierluigi Casiraghi becomes the latest Italian to join England's Chelsea. Even Lazio's captain has left. Diego Fuser ends a six-year relationship with the Romans to join Parma, the other team making waves in the Italian transfer market. Parma's big buy of the early summer is midfielder Juan Veron, who joins for $19.7 million from Sampdoria after his impressive performances for Argentina at the World Cup. That makes Veron and Chile's Salas the most expensive players in Serie A after Brazil's Ronaldo, suggesting South Americans still call the shots in Italy. Parma's other Argentine import is Abel Balbo, who moves from AS Roma for $3.4 million. French World Cup winner Alain Boghossain joins from Sampdoria for $7.9 million while defender Luigi Sartor signs from Inter for $6.8 million as Parma seek a return to the heights of earlier in the decade when they won the Italian Cup, the Cup Winners' Cup and the UEFA Cup. Unlike Lazio, Parma have reaped little in sales to take the sting out of their spending. Argentina's Nestor Sensini earned them $3.6 million by moving to Sampdoria but Brazilians Ze Maria and Adailton both left on free contracts, the former to newly-promoted Perugia, the latter to Paris St Germain. Inter's one expensive signing of the close season is, unusually, Italian. Highly-regarded striker Nicola Ventola joins from Bari for $14.7 million, seven times as much as Inter paid Bologna for their other notable signing of June, Roberto Baggio. AC Milan welcome Germany's Oliver Bierhoff, last season's top scorer in Serie A, as they once again seek to bounce back from a disastrous league campaign. Bierhoff joins from Udinese for $14.1 million while Danish midfielder Thomas Helveg makes the same move for $9.6 million. The five-times European champions have also snapped up French defensive midfielder Bruno N'Gotty from PSG and German goalkeeper Jens Lehmann from Schalke 04. The notable absentee at Milan next year will be Marcel Desailly, who moves to Chelsea for $8.5 million after his superb performances for France's World Cup winning side. Juventus's biggest signing since they clinched their 25th league title is midfielder Jocelyn Blanchard, who moves to Turin from Metz for a relatively modest $2.7 million. Otherwise, Juve have been concentrating on sales, allowing Italian international right back Moreno Torricelli to go to Fiorentina for $6.8 million. Torricelli teams up with fellow defender Joerg Heinrich, who set a German league record when he joined the Florence side from Borussia Dortmund for $13.7 million. Fiorentina's new coach Giovanni Trapattoni, who returns to Italy from Bayern Munich, has also imported Spain midfielder Guillermo Amor from Barcelona for a bargain basement $600,000 and defender Tomas Repka from Sparta Prague for $4.5 million in a bid to strengthen his side for a UEFA Cup campaign. AS Roma, another of Italy's UEFA Cup hopefuls, have signed Russian player of the year Dmitry Alenichev from Spartak Moscow for $6.8 million and midfielder Ivan Tomic from Partizan Belgrade for $4.5 million. While the big clubs in Serie A have been carving up Europe's top leagues in a multi-billion Lira search for talent, the little sides have also been delving into the transfer market. Newly-promoted Salernitana, bracing themselves for their first season in the top flight for 50 years, have taken on 18 new players more than any other club in Serie A. But the gulf in spending power between top and bottom in Italy remains vast. Salernitana's 18 new recruits cost a total of $15.8 million less than either Lazio's Salas or Parma's Veron alone.
