But his appeal fell on deaf ears when the coach named his domestic contingent for the friendly against Portugal next Wednesday. He said: "I appreciate Romario's willingness but every other player wants to go to Japan and South Korea too. I'm not going to comment any more on the presence or absence of individual players."

Extractions: Houston Eagles to Florida It was vintage Ronaldo at Yokohama, Japan as it took the Brazilian superstar a 67th minute goal off a rebound from a spectacular Rivaldo cannon that bounced off the chest of world best keeper Oliver Kahn and a second goal in the 79th minute to make history as Brazil's captain Cafu lifted the trophy the fifth time as winners of the 2002 world cup championship. With this win, Ronaldo at 25 ties Pele (soccer's all times great) with 12 goals and becomes the only player to score 8 goals in a world cup tournament, winning both the Golden Boot and MVP award the same night. In 1998, Ronaldo marred by an allegy that sidelined during the finals,he felt the pain as France beat his darling team by three goals to nothing.Ronaldo was faced with questions about what went wrong four years ago but now all those questions would be put to stop after the outstanding performance in Japan. Credit should be given to coach Scholari Felipe who took alot of heat after Romario was dropped from the final list of players to Japan. The Romario controversy even drew the attention of the Brazilian president who demanded that Romario be added to the team but coach Felipe remained adamant and said he will bear the consequences if his team did not win the championship and this paid off at last for him (coach Felipe). In all the coach proved all critics wrong that he assembled mediocre players and Ronaldo silenced everybody, placing himself on the threshold of great names in the history of soccer.

Extractions: Relax Romario SOME things never change. Like death, taxes and Romario (above) butting into soccer news. The controversial striker is at it again, this time there's a report of him taking advantage of his privileged position at his club, Fluminense. He has been warming up for a Brazilian championship quarter-final with a hydromassage session while his team-mates trained in the rain. Fluminense, enjoying a 3-0 lead from the first leg, travelled to Sao Paulo on Monday afternoon for Wednesday's second leg. But 36-year-old Romario, the hero of Brazil's 1994 World Cup triumph, exercised a clause in his contract which allows him to stay in Rio de Janeiro and travel to away matches on the day of the game. While Romario woke up at midday before going to a physiotherapy clinic for his hydromassage session in the late afternoon, the rest of the team went through a full scale practice session in the drizzle at the Sao Paulo athletics stadium. Coach Renato Portaluppi was again forced to justify the preferential treatment for a player who has publicly admitted an aversion to training and claims he plays better after a night on the town. 'What matters is having Romario on the match day. If he arrives, scores goals and helps the team to win, he will have done his part,' he said.

Extractions: Subscriptions By Rob Hughes International Herald Tribune LONDON - The icons of World Cup soccer are falling. The tournament is still a week away, but the deadline Tuesday for all 32 competing nations to submit full and final squads came too soon for Paul Gascoigne of England, for Romario of Brazil, and for Kaziu Miura of Japan. They are, or they were, pivotal players to their countries. But with the arbitrary deadline set by FIFA, the governing body of world soccer, hanging like a guillotine, their coaches or their doctors called time on their ambitions. Gascoigne, whothought he was the irreplaceable Englishman, blew his top and poured outrage and recrimination into a public debate that started as soon as the news of his omission leaked on Sunday. That debate, raw and devisive and inflamed by the secrecy that surrounds such a public thing as soccer, is still tearing like an open wound in England. It is as if the old country has nothing closer to its emotions than a sad and declining footballer. In Brazil, they were better prepared for Romario's bad day. They knew the player was volatile. They had ridden the roller coaster with him from when his artful goals, his genius, helped to win the World Cup in Pasadena four years ago. A player from the streets, and a streetwise character, he abandoned his game, abandoned his family and chased new thrills, new loves, new alcoholic adventures.

Extractions: Wednesday, May 7, 1997, page 20 By Rob Hughes International Herald Tribune LONDON - In a world of 40 million soccer players, distinctive talents are as rare as original works of art. But two gifted originals, feared lost to the game, have announced their return: Romario of Brazil and Kanu of Nigeria. Romario de Souza Faria, a World Cup winner, is already back, dumbfounding defenders through cheek and invention, challenging authority with irritating misbehavior. He is 31, a street urchin reborn. Nwankwo Kanu, 21, an Olympic champion, has the all-clear from an American heart specialist to resume full participation in the pro sport, five months after being warned that surgery on a defective aortic valve probably precluded such stress and strain in his lifetime. In 1996, anyone who knew these two men had no choice other than to thank them for the memories and write them off. In 1997, the players have overcome doubts related to head and heart, and started again. If all goes well, Romario and Kanu, players whose styles we would recognize in silhouette, should grace the World Cup in France.

Current Columns romario is an exponent of the soccer that Pele and Maradona playedand which Ronaldo, Baggio and a few others only approximate. http://www.namibian.com.na/Netstories/2000/June/Columns/0089C71E89.html
Extractions: Current Columns Thursday, June 15, 2000 - Web posted at 8:21:18 GMT THE Euro 2000 soccer tournament has kicked off in The Netherlands, and for the next couple of weeks soccer-crazy fans from all over the world will be following the fortunes of their favourite teams with something akin to religious passion. Yet, if the previous instalments of the Euro Cup, the 1998 World Cup (minus the atrocious commentary) and the last African Cup of Nations, are anything to go by, the quality of soccer has been dropping steadily. And no-one gives me a satisfactory answer as to why this is the case. One football guru, to whom I vent my frustrations about soccer, assured me that the problem was occasioned by a shift from an offensive-oriented philosophy to a defensive-oriented one. The latter, my friend explained, emphasises a tight man-to-man marking that closes down any space in which to manoeuvre. Then, with a mischievous grin, he concluded: "It's a sign of the times". Other people put the blame squarely at the feet of the referees whom they accuse of interpreting the rules rigidly and thus failing to use their discretion to allow for flowing play. Some blame the ball itself, saying its size and weight make it difficult to control unlike in the past.
