Extractions: SoccerTimes EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (Sunday, June 11, 2000) It has been five years since the United States could say it has dominated Mexico. But it did so today in Giants Stadium, capturing the Nike U.S. Cup with an easy 3-0 victory over a makeshift Mexican national team before 45,008 fans. Brian McBride The U.S. got goals from Brian McBride , and second-half substitutes Frankie Hejduk and Ante Razov , plus solid play both in the midfield and on defense, easily defeating an overmatched Mexican team made up primarily of players from the Pumas UNAM club team. "I thought we did well today," said U.S. coach Bruce Arena . "Our defense was very strong. We got very good play from our back line. (Carlos) Llamosa and (Jeff) Agoos played very well. We had good ball movement and we came at them. I was very leased with the effort and the result." The U.S., which needed a victory or a tie to win the Cup, finished 2-0-1. Mexico, which would have taken the trophy with a victory, was 1-1-1. Ireland (1-1-1) claimed second place with a 2-1 victory over South Africa (0-3) behind goals from Steven McPhail and Niall Quinn, whose 20th international goal tied Ireland's Frank Stapleton for the country's all-time scoring mark. The U.S. victory ended a three-match winning streak for Mexico over the Americans in this competition. After losing to the U.S. in 1995, Mexico won in 1996, 1997 and 1999.

(Sunday, June 4, 2000) Ireland overcame a 2-0 second-half deficit to draw Mexico 2-2 on goals by Richard Dunne and Domonic Foley in Nike U.S. Cup action in Chicago on Sunday in front of a rain-soaked crowd of 36,469 at Soldier Field. In the tournament's opening match on Saturday in Washington, D.C., the USA downed South Africa 4-0 in an impressive display before 16,570 at RFK Stadium. Ireland will be called back into action immediately on Tuesday when the team takes on the USA at Foxboro Stadium outside of Boston. The match will be aired live on ESPN at 8 p.m. ET. The tournament will then continue with Mexico-South Africa in Dallas' Cotton Bowl on Wednesday, where Mexican forward Luis Hernandez of the Los Angeles Galaxy will join the team. The tournament will conclude with a classic doubleheader featuring the USA battling their arch-rival Mexico and Ireland taking on South Africa at Giants Stadium in New Jersey on Sunday (June 11). Mexico opened the scoring in the 38th minute after a long dribbling run by Luis Perez through the heart of the Irish midfield that resulted in a short pass off to dangerous forward Daniel Osorno at the top of the penalty area. Osorno, running against the flow of play created by Perez's run, collected the ball moving to his right and cracked a right-footed shot into the left side of the Irish goal from 18 yards out. The ball took a slight deflection off Irish defender Gary Breen before settling in the back of the net past goalkeeper Dean Kiely, who had committed to his left as the ball deflected right.

Extractions: Filed at: 06:42 PM Niall Quinn rescued a point for Sunderland today against Charlton, scoring twice late on to level matters at 2-2 against Charlton at the Stadium of Light. The Londoners led through goals from Shaun Bartlett and Steve Brown before the big Irishman headed in a cross from Kevin Phillips and then nodded home the equaliser from a free-kick by Gavin McCann. Afterwards, Sunderland boss Peter Reid was full of praise for the Republic of Ireland international. "Everyone knows what I think about Niall. I wish I could find another one, that would do me. But they don't grow on trees do they, those type of players?" "When he's around, he gives the team a terrific lift. I was hoping that he wasn't going to play today having played two games in a week, but that's how important he is to them," added Charlton boss Alan Curbishley. Ten-man Bolton preserved their place on top of the Premiership table with a well-deserved 1-1 draw against Arsenal at Highbury. The visitors produced a real back-to-the-walls display after they had Ricardo Gardner sent off after 30 minutes for pulling back Dennis Bergkamp. Matters went from bad to worse when Arsenal took the lead in the 74th minute through Francis Jeffers, with his first goal for the club. But Bolton battled on and earned a point thanks to Michael Ricketts fine effort seven minutes from time.

Extractions: Filed at: Sunday, November 10 2002 09:10 PM Niall Quinn today announced his retirement from professional football after persistent injury problems. The Republic of Ireland striker, who began his career at Arsenal, has been at Sunderland for six years after previously playing for Manchester City. Quinn's decision was announced to the crowd at the Stadium of Light at half-time in the match between Sunderland and Tottenham. A Sunderland spokesman said: "Niall has decided the time has come to hang up his boots and retire as a player because of persistent injury problems. He will continue to have some links with Sunderland Football Club." Quinn said, "There have been some wonderful times and wonderful memories - and the luck I've had has been quite incredible. People got dropped and injured for me. Then I looked on the scrapheap, and great surgeons rebuilt me - but the Indian summer I had here was something special. I think someone up there has a soft spot for me because I wasn't the greatest trainer in the world - I think Peter Reid would agree with that." As for the future Quinn does not rule out a role in management. In the meantime he will be watching the Wearsiders - and taking things easy. "I'm looking forward to coming along and seeing how far the lads can bring us," he said.

Extractions: The Republic of Ireland scored in the 92nd minute to peg back Germany. Robbie Keane was played in at close range to hit high into the net from close range after Niall Quinn won a header against Carsten Ramelow and man-of-the-match Oliver Khan finally conceded. Germany were on the brink of becoming the first nation to qualify for the second stages of the World Cup finals with a win over the Republic of Ireland until their defence cracked in the 92nd minute. Miroslav Klose is the top scorer at the final after recording the 19th minute winner which was his fourth of the tournament. Klose has now hit 12 goals in 14 games for the Germans and he stooped to head in a free header after Michael Ballack clipped a ball forward at an angle from the left wing. Ireland responded by taking charge of the game in Ibaraki. Captain Oliver Kahn had to charge from his goal and run to the left wing to tackle Damien Duff and he crucially won the challenge after the German offside trap broke down.

Forum Republic of Ireland manager Mick McCarthy picked out midfielders Mark Kinsella and Lee Carsley as his two outstanding performers in the 1-0 win over Macedonia in Dublin which saw the Republic join Yugoslavia at the top of Group Eight for Euro 2000. McCarthy thought Kinsella was superb (Allsport) 'Kinsella was superb I thought,' said the Ireland boss. 'And Carsley did a great job for me looking after Macedonia's number 10, and best player Viktor Trenevski. 'Lee was dictated by me to sit on him while Mark got forward and together they were outstanding.' There were many plus points for a Republic side lacking key personnel, including injured skipper Roy Keane as they avenged their humiliating World Cup defeat in Skopje two years ago - and their fragmented build-up after last week's game against Yugoslavia was called off. 'After a week of ifs and buts it was nice to get a competitive game for the first time in a long while - and it was nice to win it,' said a contented McCarthy. Niall Quinn's 67th-minute header gave the Republic the win they so richly deserved.
