Extractions: September 1, 2000 The biggest news in Soccer this past month was not the U.S. vs. Barbados match, nor the elimination of D.C. United from the MLS playoffs (although this, too, was big!)! It was, however, the retirement from international soccer of Michelle Akers, arguably one of the greatest female soccer players of all time. Akers is undoubtedly a pillar and pioneer in Womens Soccer. She has had an unquestionably storied career, and deserves great recognition for all that she has done for the game of soccer. Even more amazing is the fact that she has battled through so many injuries as well as her case of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. We wish Akers a speedy recovery, and we look forward to her debut in the WUSA. If an aging womens team was ever a concern for anyone, there fears can be quelled. The women have enough quality players under the age of 25 to field an entire team good enough to compete with the best in the world. Lest we not forget that Lorrie Fair is only 22. As is Cindy Parlow, who at this point, may be considered the best U.S. striker. But even Parlow is being challenged by the likes of Christie Welsh and Susan Bush, two extremely talented strikers just waiting to break out. And Kate Sobrero is now considered a veteran at the tender age of 24. So the retirement of Akers should not be met with trepidation. The young American women are able and awaiting their chance. Thus, the prognosis for the future of the Womens National Team looks healthy and bright!

Hundreds of children lost their moms and dads, or learned of loved ones seriously injured. Many other parents are without jobs because of this disaster. On the sidelines, many of us wondered what we could do to help. The 911 New York Soccer Foundation was created to assist victims and families who are suffering tremendously. This new foundation's goal is to provide help during this time of financial hardship. As never before, we've enlisted the services of the greater New York soccer community, which encompasses youth, adult, high school, college and professional soccer.

Extractions: PASADENA, CA (September 30, 2001) A Mauricio Cienfuegos goal eight minutes into the series tiebreaker against the MetroStars clinched a berth in the MLS Cup semifinals for the Los Angeles Galaxy at the Rose Bowl on Saturday afternoon. The Galaxy had forced the tiebreaker after capturing all three points in Game Three with a 3-2 regulation win, tying the series at four points apiece. Game One had concluded in a 1-1 tie while the MetroStars emerged victorious in Game Two at Giants Stadium by the score of 4-1. The series-clinching goal came off a free kick at the right corner of the MetroStars' penalty box after Metros captain Daniel Hernandez fouled an accelerating Cobi Jones. Cienfuegos, a member of the Galaxy since the 1996 inaugural season, attempted to curl the ball over the MetroStars wall and the ball deflected off the chest of Metros midfielder Mark Chung and swerved into the left side of the goal, past immobile MetroStars goalkeeper Tim Howard. The series overtime followed a see-saw affair in Game Three which saw both teams exhausted by the final whistle. The Galaxy, however, were also playing with 10 men from the 72nd minute after defender Danny Califf was sent off for bringing down Metros forward Rodrigo Faria, who took advantage of an Alexi Lalas miskick and was sprinting toward goal. The Galaxy also had to start the match without their other regular starting central defender, Greg Vanney, who was forced to sit out a one-game suspension for a red card received in Game Two.
Extractions: The MetroStars struggled all afternoon on a hot and humid day in Naperville, where the defense had to deal with the Fire offense led by DaMarcus Beasley, Josh Wolff, Ante Razov, and eventual second half substitute Hristo Stoitchkov. The Fire were on the board early in the sixth minute when second-year defender Jim Curtin knocked home a free kick sent into the box by Razov for a 1-0 lead. The goal stood as the only tally in the first 45 minutes as the home side out shot the MetroStars, 9-0. The Fire took advantage of a counter attack in the 49th minute when a Dema Kovalenko to Wolff to Razov combination sealed the second goal against Tim Howard. A Mike Petke defensive miscue eight minutes later enabled Razov to slam home the third goal against Howard one-on-one for the third score. The visiting Metros lost striker Mamadou Diallo in the 41st minute of the game when he left with a strained left hamstring. He was replaced by New Jersey product and former Rutgers star Dustin Sheppard, who recorded his MLS debut with the substitution. Diallo is listed as day-to-day. The MetroStars still own possession of first place in the Eastern Conference Standings as they now lead the Fire by only two points. The Columbus Crew, who are trailing by four points, could cut the lead to one, depending on their result tonight at Los Angeles.
